The Sound of Silence - Original recording by Simon & Garfunkel

«The Sound of Silence» was originally recorded in 1964 by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and was included on their debut album: «Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M» titled as «The Sounds of Silence»
Released in October 1964 the album was a commercial failure at first, but in spring 1965 the song began to attract growing airplay at radio stations. This led to the remix of the track, but still, that first recording by Simon & Garfunkel in 1964 is widely regarded to be its best version.
Scenes in the video are from the film: «Watchmen» wherein the song played.

For those new listeners, the song is about the lack of commutation among groups of people, and people being indifferent to their surroundings , just going with crowd. That’s why the guy was outside the cemetery with a contrasting opinion… breaking the sound of silence .strong video. The last verse is about not bowing down to the big consumer giant.

An immortal sound! There have been many versions of the song since then, but this original one remains far the best of all... even the second version sung by Simon & Garfunkel themselves doesn't reach the perfection of their first try, in the second version too many instruments steal something from the magic coming out of the voices and Paul's guitar. Simon and Garfunkel did not redo the song, check out the bio. it was put out a second time by the produce without telling them. in went into orbit because of that. If the producer had not add the instruments by dubbing over there voices the Bridge over Troubled Waters never would have happened nor the group of s&g, Me i'm glade the producer did this, you can always just choose to listen to the first version.

If there are other folks who've covered it... I'm not interested. These voices are so organically integral to this version of the song (they ARE the song) and have become a part of the collective consciousness, It is a masterpiece, you don't touch it. IMHO. I'm as liberal as it gets, but in the vein of Ayn Rand.. this is a kind of beauty that you don't tarnish or degrade by those who can't appreciate it for what it is.. pinnacle creation.

Now it's 2024. One of my favorite bands, Disturbed released a remake years ago. The tempo is slower and tone a bit more dramatic. But it still carries the same message, to more generations. (I love the original and the remake I memtioned) It truly is a song for the ages, and always will be .
