I love XTC because they represent a kind of missing link between the old and the new. Old enough to have been around when the real shit was going down in the sixties and young enough to be seeking out the new. It's strange how they managed to keep secret their real playing chops at the beginning when "radical" was all the rage. But they stuck it out until they had enough cred to not have to hide just good they could play.

Love *hearing* Dave, but what happened to the video quality? There's some weird red-green color split with a ghost image.

Love this. The Firebird is one of the most beautiful solid body guitar designs ever. The reason for the non-reverse Firebird was due to the previous Firebirds not being big sellers at the time, and Gibson wanted a more Fender like design to compete. 50 plus yrs later the earlier models are in great demand and now considered iconic guitars. Hence all the reissues.

I bought " Making Plans for Nigel" when it first came out. I thought the guitar sound, the hammer off cord effect & the weird solo where brilliant & so different to anything id heard before

When I first heard "Making plans for Nigel" I went, hey that sounds familiar. Then I realized that "De do do do, de da da da" of The Police has the same chord progression and the same rhythmic figure on the drums. I guess Sting liked "making plans" so much that he made his own plans for Nigel.

Great post egidio sabbadini,I'm really a drummer but your posts fascinate me, Gibson's are such "meaty" guitars.

I heard that Dave also used 10-52 strings for a while (10s for the unwound/treble side, 12s for the wound/bass side) is that true?

FAO Dave Gregory, if you ever read the comments about these videos. I am a uk collector with quite a few similar instruments, KZbin doesn't let me post the url or my email address here, but you can view them by searching for rockbeareguitars. (I use the alias to protect the collection). I'm not an avid XTC fan or a stalker, but I am a like mind. If you ever fancy shooting the breeze about your and my collections, you can reach me through the website. All the best.

WHY does this video look like a BAD Jefferson Airplane video with the cheesy psychedelic image distortion? .... I would LOVE to SEE THAT FIREBIRD.
@vampyros1
@vampyros1 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed... defeats the purpose of the video. We don't need artsy video when the topic is guitars; the guitar is the art. Though, I am on a big Jefferson Airplane kick right now : )

Hey man ....I didn't mean to insult The Airplane in ANY WAY vamp. ... I was only complaining about how the sixties style psychedelic video distortion RUINED our chance to admire Dave Gregory's awesome collection.
@vampyros1
@vampyros1 6 жыл бұрын
No offence taken at all. Actually the video reminds me more of some amateur mid-80's public access take on psychedelia than the more refined art of the original era. I threw the Airplane bit in there because I actually am reacquainting myself with their catalog. Any 25 O'clock fan should soak up After Bathing at Baxters. Happy listening.

Never liked the band I'm afraid, (to me - cocky band without real reason behind it) but he really had tone & taste, despite the punchy style of the group. And dear god, these guitars in THIS room sound incredible. I just wonder of the amp. Sound is so good, it looks like Marshall/Fender combination, but...those pedals...his knowledge of that room... joy, really.
