The Sound Stone

4 жыл бұрын

Available now at www.soundstone.co for $34.99.
The Sound Stone is hand assembled in Austin, Texas by two brothers who saw the need for an affordable sustainer. Now virtually anyone will be able to access the classic tool that has been used in so many recordings.
By creating a magnetic field that forces your strings to vibrate, the Sound Stone replaces the need to use a pick. Simply place the Sound Stone over the string you would like to sustain. Using different playing styles, the guitarist can mimic the sounds of a synthesizer, flute, cello, and various other instruments to attain a truly unique sound.

It definitely works on a bass, and is easier to align than an eBow. I'll need to practice with it a bit to see how usable it is for performance, but I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

Just tried mine today. It's my first sustainer so I can't really compare to others. Of course I don't read the instructions and figured out by trial & error on the technique. Funny that I thought I needed to have distortion on to make it sound like in the videos but as it turns out it sounds better without any distortion at all and a little delay/reverb really makes it shine.

I have an nane-unmentionable sustainer, and have always wanted a version that was wide enough to play two or even three strings simultaneously.. to make a drone chord i could slowly change. Any chance there’s a polyphonic sound stone?
@Merlincat007
@Merlincat007 4 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about this for a while! Maybe like up to 6 sustainers in one case, with buttons for each string. Maybe each button could have a two directional function, forward is momentary while backward locks and sustains? The device could potentially be mountable to the guitar, or it could just be held pressed against the guitar with two struts, one on the outside of each E string.

It's a Gizmotron, or a Fernandes Sustainer pickup, or maybe even a Sustainiac. most polyphonic solutions are mounted though

It is mentioned to place the string to be played between the rails, I assume for low an high e strings you just are dealing with one of the rails?
@TheSoundStone
@TheSoundStone 4 жыл бұрын
TheChicagoTodd yep that’s correct, as with all sustainers you have to balance it on one of the rails for those strings. It’s not as easy as the other strings, but it’s definitely doable

@@TheSoundStone so, I'm struggling to use this. It seems to vibrate the strings so hard that the string hits the Sound Stone and buzzes and stops ringing. I will try it on a different guitar, but I'm not getting success from my Gretsch. I would love some guidance on making it work. (Also, the battery cover makes me want to scream words that used to get my mouth washed out with soap, but I digress.)
@TheSoundStone
@TheSoundStone Жыл бұрын
@@jeffzachritz8879 Similar to a mic feeding back into a speaker, it typically needs an initial signal to get it started, like a hammer on or slide into the note, or wiggle the string. This is common with all sustainers to get them started. There's a learning curve with how much pressure to put on the unit to get the magnets at the optimal distance from the strings. This distance varies across the neck, and is affected by the action of the guitar. So, the main thing to practice is how much pressure you're pushing on it or even sometimes slightly lifting it up if it starts to buzz. If you're having any more trouble you can email me and I'm always happy to do a return if you're not into it!
