Thank you very much for this first lesson in Hungarian. I came to America in the seventies, having been born in Arad, Romania. Knowing the letters and sounds of the individual letters helped me a lot. Please keep making videos with the lessons. But, pronounced as you did, sounds very strange for a Hungarian, and I don’t see the necessity of doing so. Pronouncing what you call the “names” of the letters they will sound exactly equal as used in speech, because, as you stated, Hungarian is a phonetic language and their letters sounds equal in any word, including in their “names”. In English there are differences between the pronunciation of the “names” of the letters and their pronunciation in different words, because English is not a phonetic language, and the same letter could sound differently depending of the word. This is the reason for the necessity of “names” for the letters in English, but this is not the case in Hungarian.

Actually this is an interesting fact: if you pair all the letters with their 'y counterparts', you can see how they are connected. For example you have to change the pronunciation of t to get ty in the exact same way as you have to alter n's to get ny. The only exception is gy, because it's pair isn't g, as the alphabet suggests, but d. So the fact that you use d as part of a combination to indicate gy makes much more sense 😄
@KugleeKuglee
@KugleeKuglee 4 жыл бұрын
@@KitaKiyonori much more sense if they use dy 😄 ż is like a soft Z and this letter is formed much further in the mouth than G. gy (or dy 😄) is instant follow from G or vice versa. Very simple: Y here is the softener formative and same rule on ny, ty. LY vs J is an interesting "animal". Now these two word has same pronunciation. Before XVI century people used L and a bit softer version L. This was the original LY (nobody use nowadays) . That time LY wasn't same as J but around XVI century the original LY pronunciation slowly died out and changed to J. That's why there are two same pronunciation latter in Hungarian language. This is always debate among linguistics about to delete LY from the alphabet. 😄

Well I found that s-added alphabets mean to be post-alveolar sound. C [ts] to cs [tʃ], dz [dz] to dzs [dʒ], z [z] to zs [ʒ], and add z to s to make [s] sound, since single s sounds [ʃ]... My native language is Brasilian Portuguese. I am astonished how many sounds we have in Portuguese spoken by people in Central Brazil with their typical accent which are similiar to those in Hungarian ( we don't have the ' o" ' and the ' u" ' ).

In 1982, under the patronage of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a linguistics book called "A Magyar Szokeszlet Roman Elemeinek Tortenete" was printed, proving that 2,333 words from the basic lexicon of the Hungarian language are borrowed from the Romanian language.

Thank you, I just started to learn Hungarian. I got scared with the look of these letters. It was a pleasant surprise to know how similar Serbian and Hungarian letters sound.

+vukpetkovic2702 Yeah, the sounds are similar. The rest? :) But give it a try, it's a beautiful language. Thanks for watching.

+hungariantutor I agree, it's really interesting and challenging. But one thing I might never adjust to is pronunciation. When I listen to some people from Hungary it sounds to me like they slow down in the middle of word or sentence. It's hard to repeat that. Btw great video.

You can immediately spot the native Hungarian accent, not because you do anything wrong, but because you do not instinctively try to add that extra multi-vowel open mouth roundness that many native English speakers do.

Thanks for this! My company has an office in Budapest; all the employees there speak good English, but I like learning a little bit of Hungarian (jó reggelt, hogy vagy, etc) to show solidarity with my colleagues. And this way we can laugh about my terrible pronunciation!

there's no difference between them in pronounciation, we don't really use the 'w' actually, but if we do, it sounds like 'v' :)

Yes.. There's no difference in pronounciation between "j" and "ly". It depends on the word that what we use.. For example: hely, ajak. In the both words the pronounciation is the same, but we write it anyways..

FabulousDorka. My Hungarian dictionary states there is no "w" in the Hungarian alphabet. I am 3rd generation In US (100% Magyar on both sides of the family) and am trying to relearn the language I have forgotten due to lack of use. Quite a chore as I am 72 1/2! Wish me luck. I need it. English is my worse nightmare. AAArrrgh! Especially the grammar. Have 6 college credits in English, and still no grammar - the only way I passed was on creative skills alone. That is genetic so does not count either. ha ha

Greetings! Thanks for your teaching. Good pronunciation. Maybe a few letters I can not figure out how to say. But I am a beginner and American. On mom's side my great, great grandfather was Hungarian, my great grandfather was Ukrainian Jew, and my grandfather was Polish, who also spoke German. So I'm trying to learn these languages. I have been learning Russian, but so slowly. No one to practice with. Sorry so long text. Thanks for your patience. Have good day, Peter. Please, keep making videos.😊👍
