The ancient history prove that the sea which is now called South China Sea has been navigated and traversed by the early seafarers and fishermen coming from the West, East and Southern part of the sea to trade or fish in this body of water. It shouldn't be claim unilaterally by China as its territory. Also China cannot support their claim of the sea by stating that it's their traditional fishing grounds. The ASEAN's could have been the first traditional fishermen of this sea because of proximity. Just because it was named SCS it doesn't mean it belongs to China. It was only the early Portuguese explorers navigating the sea that named it South China Sea to differentiate it from other bodies of water. No country should claim this sea unilaterally because it is shared by many countries in the region to which they enjoy the freedom of navigation with their trade throughout history. The 9-claim of China has no legal and historical basis according to the Arbitral Tribunal in the Hague.

This Inner Sea is not a South "China" Sea at all. Since it is an erroneously named Sea by the use of the English language. Since it is not a Sea that is barely geographically adjacent to China at all, except for Hainan Island's offshore economic zone, which does not even remotely include, for example, the Spratley Islands, which is part of, inside, the Philippine's Offshore Economic Zone. The great majority of this entire Inner Sea is geographically part of the National Offshore Economic Zones of Vietnam, The Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand and Singapore. The vast majority of China's seaboard is actually quite far away from this Sea.

Sean Yee Indian Ocean called like that doesn’t mean it’s belonged to India :)) (At least they’re not greedy like China) So is South China Sea :)) In Filipino, it’s called West Philippine sea and in Vietnamese, it is East Vietnam sea. They only name South China Sea in English, because hundred years ago, it would be easy to locate the sea. Who the fuck claim more than 80% of the sea? Australia should join the US led forces to reject China's illegal claim of sovereignty over the South China Sea and oppose it from occupying, illegal reclaiming and building several artificial islands and using them for its military posts in the area. Other nations in the contested areas should all join the US subsequently.

Mr. Mark Rafael, both the term West Philippine Sea and South China Sea is correct because they are both stating directions. The sea is to the west of the Philippines, it is also to the south of China. It's to the east of Vietnam. It's to the north of Malaysia and Brunei. The reason the sea is called the South China sea by most is because the sea is to the south of China and China is a powerful country. Do note that the Philippines won an international case against China regarding the dispute, sadly China has rejected the ruling. China doesn't like to talk about things or issue it knows will make them highly disliked. For example, Tiananmen Square Massacre, massive crack down on falun gong practicioners, burning of churches, and the recent 2 million hong kongers protesting against a proposed bill. If you talk about this, China's 50 cent brigade will most likely ignore most of what you commented as if you never commented it. They will most likely reply with something closer to, insulting you and blaming your government. Also, most of what I mentioned are banned in China. Please stay safe mister.

China's policy toward South China Sea since Deng Xiaoping is "lay the disputes aside and exploit together". China has a long historical relationship with S China Sea: King of Nanyue (predecessor of Vietnam, a part of China till 939AD, Vietnamese: Nhà Tri?u) Zhao Tuo (a Han Chinese 240BC-137BC, Vietnamese: Tri?u Ðà) administrated northern part of SC Sea. 1972 unearthed Mawangdui Han Tombs extracted some maps with SCS. "Book of Later Han" wrote between 432AD and 445AD has chapters about SCS. Various later historical documents describe South C Sea. The most famous event for Chinese to explore South China Sea is "Zheng He's Voyages". Zheng He (1371-1433 or 1435), formerly romanized as Cheng Ho, was a Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat, fleet admiral, and court eunuch during China's early Ming dynasty. He was originally born as Ma He in a Muslim family, later adopted the conferred surname Zheng from Emperor Yongle. Zheng commanded expeditionary voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, Western Asia, and East Africa from 1405 to 1433. His larger ships stretched 120 meters or more in length. These carried hundreds of sailors on four tiers of decks. South China sea is very important "belt" for old Chinese's trade route. "China" as porcelain can be found in many places on land or under water along the old "belt" trade route. If you think China should claim a small part of SCS then China can get peace with other countries? Which small part? If we claim small part of SC Sea, it is not reasonable. In the ancient time, Chinese ancestor's activity/navigation is not restricted to a small part or to a fixed sea route. Most islands or coral reef are claimed after WW2, or after WW1. But Chinese has relationship with S China S is 1500 years earlier than most of the claims.

John Feng........Yes I believe China should own the entire SCS, not a partial sea as was defined by the 9 dashes. When Chinese ancient ancestors talked about the SCS, they all meant the entirety, not a small part. Unfortunately modern Chinese descendants made China's ownership smaller by drawing dashes on the map. China's ownership might be made into a 50% ownership of the SCS because the lines can be 200 nautical miles away from land. The 9 dashes should be and must be removed as soon as possible.

Is not international waters it belongs to R.O.C. Aka Taiwan. The biggest island TAIPING in Spratly Islands was occupy by R.O.C. government military after WW2 TO THIS DAY. 1945 - In accordance with the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations and with American help, the armed forces of the Republic of China government at Nanjing accepted the surrender of the Japanese garrisons in Taiwan, including the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Nanjing then declared both archipelagoes to be part of Guangdong Province. At the same time, the Government and exiles of the Kingdom of Humanity returned to the islands. 1946 - The R.O.C. established garrisons on both Woody (now Yongxing / 永興) Island in the Paracels and Taiping Island in the Spratlys. France protested. The French tried but failed to dislodge Chinese nationalist troops from Yongxing Island/Woody Island (the only habitable island in the Paracels), but were able to establish a small camp on Pattle (now Shanhu / 珊瑚) Island in the southwestern part of the archipelago. The Republic of China drew up The Southern China Sea Islands Location Map, marking the national boundaries in the sea with 11 lines, showing the U shaped claim on the entire South China Sea, and showing the Spratly and Paracels in Chinese territory, in 1947. The Americans reminded the Philippines at its independence in 1946 that the Spratlys was not Philippine territory, both to not anger Chiang Kai-shek in China and because the Spratlys were not part of the Philippines per the 1898 treaty Spain signed with America. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT PEOPLE! Basically these country take advantage of Chinese Civil War! If R.O.C. still got military force on the island, they won't say anything today. Only in 1997 - Philippines begins to challenge Chinese sovereignty over the Scarborough Shoal. Philippines have no sense of shame!

lol simply because its the sea where most of the world entered to reach the path to chinese trade. same with indian ocean being that body of water where ships go to find india. many other bodies of water are named that way like the philippine sea just east of the philippines because its the body of water where the notable place there is that its next to the philippines. would you tell everyone in the world that you now own the street in front of your house just because it is the street where everyone goes to find you? if this logic of ownership rights over naming were to grant any credence, everyone would just stop calling it south china sea which vietnam and the philippines now actually have stopped.

It is and that map was designed 70 years ago and claimed by both the PRC and RP according to one News Commentator. So the 9-1 is a code the way i see it. Mao and Chang were fully aware of it to free China from Japan and unification of China and the region ....land and sea under one regime or political status and its resources. By land resulted in the 1960s and 1970s conflict in the region between communism and democracy, however most of those countries today have broken the chain and having close ties with the west. And now by sea to subdue them and as a corridor to the South Pacific over the High Seas. That is what I assume. Recently China is extending that line to include Japan and South Korea, thus a 11-1 line.

China does not want multi-lateral agreement. They only want bi-lateral agreement. That's why it cannot be solved. Hague did not solve the issue. It just ruled on the legitimacy of the 9-dash claim.

Please refer to the sea by its historically accurate name - West Philippine Sea not the south china sea. I look forward to the creation of the West Philippine Sea Treaty Organization consisting of India, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, Stope referring to the other sea as the South Korea Sea not the east china sea. After all China did not exist as a country until the 20th century!

This issue must the resolved internationally to avoid bad precedence. Any territory not owned by a specific nation is owned by the world. In this perspective, China is not simply owning territories from smaller and weaker nations. They are getting what belongs to the world. Because the international waters is being controlled by china they now beleived that they own even those territories beyond like the west phil. sea. China must explain where they are basing their claim. So that internafional community will not resolve to speculations.
