I am planning to write a letter to the paper about the devolution of the English language. Not only are we losing our Southern accents but also our children use as few words as possible. Words are replaced with the word "like" and they also use it where no word is needed. It drives me insane!!!!

I don't think the use of the word "like" is any sort of problem, that's just a buffer between thoughts, sometimes you cannot figure out what to say or how to word something. I don't doubt that our ancestors had similar buffer words, but just try not to make saying "like" in sentences too common of a habit. It's particularly common among children and adolescents because sometimes they don't have all the words to describe the intricate thoughts in their head, it seems like the comment you posted is unintentionally making people feel bad because they sometimes struggle with speaking, when we really should just be trying to help them out with it.

I wish you had mentioned Florida and Virgina. Florida was over taken by northern industrialists. For example Henry Flagler set up Florida to be a vacation destination and by extension, retirement haven. People retire to Florida from up north, it's never their home. And they try and transform Florida into Ohio with palms. All while making fun of *Florida man" And they die and leave inheritance to cultural institutions up north. It annoys me to no end to hear people say something like north Florida isn't even Florida it's more like Georgia or Alabama... Nooooo north Florida is Florida.. south Florida is unlike Florida . I'm Brazilian, so, in theory I got nothing to do with this. But, I don't know why, I've always felt a lot of simpathy for the American south. I've somehow, even before my first trip to the US, managed to intuitively apprehend the differences between the south and the north. Only after years of study I realized that my intuition was right. I love the values of the south, as exposed by Mr Fleming. In Brazil, we can only get a grasp of it, sometimes, when living in very small circles of Catholics and Orthodox. And my favorite music is southern rock. Maybe I can become one of you, not sure if I would be accepted with a strong foreign accent, but I would love to move the one those states and assimilate it's culture. Maybe someday.

I am impressed that this gentleman knows something about Balkans, but he should have emphasised that Serbs were the nation from witch the West torn those artificial identities away. The term Balkanisation means breaking one nation and state into two or more new nationes and states in order to weaken the potential of resistance to empires. The nation that was Balkanised was the Serbs, because they always stood in the way of every empire, Ottoman Turkey, Austro-Hungary, German empires, the second and the third reich, Soviet Union considered invasion and last, but not the least USA and their NATO minions attacked in 1999 and didn't set one foot on Serbian soil, only when they threatened with carpet bombing Serbia has withdrawn from it's Kosovo province, but not before UN security counsel enacted resolution witch guaranteed Serbian sovereignty over Kosovo. One day, Serb will retake it's holly land.

The Confederate States of America was no more a nation than was, or is, the United States of America. Both were formed by sovereign States under compacts which granted only limited powers to a central government for their mutual benefit, with the primary purpose being defense against foreign invaders. It is most proper to refer to the Confederate States and the United States in the collective as "these" or "their," depending on context. The use of the term "nation" to refer to either government is only colloquial but has no legal meaning, for neither government ever had sovereignty conferred upon it by the member States or their people. The Confederate States of America has one major distinction from the United States that has never been openly debated or thoroughly reviewed without bias by noted authorities. That distinction is the compact of the United States of America was never lawfully ratified. Why do I make this assertion? Because several representatives of various States sent to the ratifying convention exceeded their lawful authority under their respective State constitutions by voting to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America. Ironically, the Confederate States of America were invaded and conquered by a "nation" which not only has never existed but at the direction of a tyrant and his cronies who had no lawful authority to perform any act whatsoever, especially not the act of waging an international war against the South.

Perhaps the more profound question we should ask: Is slavery a moral issue? To answer this question requires defining what a slave is, which is not trivial. I'm not bright enough to discuss this, but Dr. Fleming is and does, at a Fleming Foundation podcast (subscription required and worth it). Robert Peters has written an excellent response to give some flavor of Fleming's comments: If one’s moral compass is oriented toward the metaphysics of the Enlightenment with all of its rationalized abstractions, then one is compelled to view slavery as a moral evil; for what can be more evil than to thwart whims, compulsions and desires of the autonomous individual outfitted with an assortment of inalienable rights by asserting that one owns for a lifetime his labor as a subordinate member of a household along with the obligation to clothe, house, feed and retire said person during that lifetime. If one’s moral compass is informed by Christian metaphysics, one understands that one’s duty is to take up one’s cross daily and follow Christ within the created order and within the fallenness which plagues that order. One might be a king or a pauper; a master or a slave; a general or a soldier; a craftsman or a novice; a husband or a wife; a parent or a child. There is a hierarchy (holy order). St. Paul understands this in his letter to Philemon. It is good that our Lord was not informed by Enlightenment metaphysics. Had He been, He would not have said of the Centurion, “no greater faith than this have I found in all of Israel!” He would have, instead, said, “You hypocrite, free that slave you claim, for I heal only free men; and release all of the soldiers under your command; for under your command they die at your will. After all, they are autonomous individuals!”
@albertcamerato76737 жыл бұрын
grouchocatman The discussion of whether slavery is moral or not could begin or end with the search for a freeman who would voluntarily put his wife or mother or sister or his children into bondage to another. Lincolns time gave him many examples of "you sweat and work and I will Eat". When all you have is labor of your hands, is there a higher felony than to have that labor stolen and the profit taken by another?

These areas were far-flung, sparsely settled frontier outposts that could neither be supported nor defended from the distant capital in Mexico City. They were not stolen, but won through easy conquest or purchased outright, and most of the Spanish-speaking settlers there favored joining the U.S.

Ok, one more time for the slow kids: Confederate symbols have no right on any public land in this country. Robert Lee said to not erect any memorials or symbols as it would be a finger in the eye of this country. If you want to celebrate your heritage, do it in your own yard or buy some land and do it there. We are Americans first. Start acting like it.

@Shana Flannigan I'm white. I don't feel that way. There's no evidence for you to feel that way. You're perceiving a world that doesn't exist. Rights are not a zero sum game. Some people gaining rights doesn't mean yours are reduced. Grow up.
@craigwubben69734 жыл бұрын
@Shana Flannigan slavery was not everywhere in America in mid 1800s. Only the border states MO, KY, DE and MD had it. It was basically nowhere in the north at this time. The form of slavery in the south (chattel slavery) was very rare in the world. Statues are NOT history. No one is trying to erase your past. Just the reverence for it. Put up any statue or flag you want on your private property. But statues of those traitorous fucks who should have been hanged should be ripped from every public space. The south caused the war. The south destroyed reconstruction through black codes and Jim crow. Blacks had the vote and power in the south during reconstruction. Racist southerners said nope, can't have that and the KKK murdered thousands. And poll taxes. And literacy tests. Blacks had no right to vote in the south again until 1960s. Then racist southerners said fuck it, we'll just be republicans now. And it still happens. The lack of polling places on election day in minority communities in the south tells everything you need to know about unequal rights. AND THE SOUTH NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR ANY OF IT. Damn right people are still mad about it.

While I find being a southern *nothing* to be ashamed over and while I myself am a southerner, I am glad the Confederacy lost the war (fucking traitors). No, the Confederacy did not secede only over slavery, but slavery was a contributing factor to their secession and that is unacceptable.
@bobbykm4jeg2347 жыл бұрын
Gammareign why exactly were they traitors. the legal right to succession was never challenged before the war. The Confederacy never sought to wrest control from the north. Matter of fact not one Southern politician or soldier was try and convicted of treason that I am aware of.

Jefferson Davis was held in prison for two years; initially he was put in irons and held in solitary confinement. After two years he was released. Despite his repeated requests, he was never put on trial, and eventually all charges were dropped. I am confused by Gammareign's statement. Is he saying that secession would have been acceptable were slavery not a contributing factor?
@donrutter67657 жыл бұрын
The south fought over states rights which were being usurped over a centralized government of tyranny. This changed the original Jeffersonian constitution of small government no debt, to an ever expanding government and ever expanding tax.The Lincolnian constitution insured the US would one day incur bankruptcy, not possible for our original condtitution.Plus, a 250%tax on southern cotton before the slavery issue, was tyranny Like King George over tea tax in Revolution America.
