How did the Soviets conquer the eastern parts of Germany? How did the Eastern Front of WW2 end? In this video I'll discuss how the Soviets defeated the Germans at the Eastern Front of WWII. It started with the Soviet invasion of East Prussia that culminated in the Battle of Köningsberg. During the Vistula-Oder Offensive the Red Army overran huge parts of Poland and arrived at the Oder river. Was Berlin next? Not right away since the Red Army had to deal with its flanks north and south. The Siege of Breslau and attacks on Danzig and the coast followed. Germans tried to evacuate as many civilians as possible, because no German wanted to endure the revenge of the Red Army. When the flanks were secured the Battle of Berlin followed. It was the end of the Third Reich. World War II in Europa had come to an end.

All Armies are brutal the first victims of the Brutalising is the men themselves. At 76 for the first time Indy Nydall showed the Dutch Armie's Brutality and horror in Indonesia. So the internet might be spying on us all but at last History programs are really telling enough to decipher. I fear war and famine for all people. Imperialist wars are a return to savagery. All lands live in glass houses. Savagery is fascinating if you're not involved.

Ik kom achter allemaal zaken die ik niet wist. Ik was bekend met de grote lijnen van hoe het oostfront zich ontwikkelde, maar jij duikt diep in de details. Echt een topvideo. Ik heb me geabonneerd.
@HistoryHustle

Wellicht interessant. Dank voor je bericht nogmaals!

I think by the end of the war, the German and Soviet soldiers were so de-humanized by all the brutality and atrocities they had seen and were forced to commit themselves, we cannot judge them the same way as we would judge human behavior in most other circumstances. @@HistoryHustle allow me to explain (this isn't the first video of yours that I see), you almost always go by the established narrative of the cold war era regarding ww2 created predominantly by Halder, manstein and others who worked with the US army post ww2. Much of those memoirs has been shown to be unreliable and highly biased (for clear personal gain) when compared with actual heer documentation and war diaries as well as other primary sources (soviet archives). I highly advise you to be familiarized with David glantz, stahel and other historians that revolutionized our understanding of this particular conflict.

@@HistoryHustle "I did make a video about Russian war crimes. Others I've still to cover." It could be risky. Blaming Russians is safer ;) Now, I would like to point that Soviet Union was a multi-ethnic country, and that some ethnicities were quite "primitive", not counting many imprisoned criminals who were released into army. More recent studies show that degree of criminality was comparable with Western allies. Some Western troops were notorious, see for example: French Moroccan troops of the French Expeditionary Corps, known as Goumiers. I would not be surprised if the most disciplined soldiers were on German side.

Not the best idea to use Beevor as your main source for the Eastern Front. For some unclear reason that British gramps makes every single rumor in to a solid fact when in comes to Soviets. Not familar with your book, but i have gone through couple of his other works and each of them he pushed narative that poor german soldiers were squeezed in between mad man A.H and hordes of inhuman soviet orcs. I am sure authors like Glantz, Overy, Harrison and some others wrote somenthing more adequate about this WW2 period.

You hardly mentioned the First and Second Polish Armies which since 1942 fought alongside the Red Army all the way to Berlin and Dresden. The First Polish Army constituted 10% of the attack on Berlin. I wonder if you have details about their participation. Unlike the Free Polish Forces fighting in the West there is very little written about them in the English language. Here is a video of them putting up a Polish Flag somewhere in Berlin kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3qYhJKModufgNE I believe 200,000 were involved in the encirclement of Berlin and the Kosciuszko Division took the western part of the city. Neue Kantstrasse and Pestalozzistrasse, Karl-August-Platz, Technical University, Tiergarten, several train stations, and other streets up to the Brandenburg Gate. In fact, nearly 500,000 Poles fought in these two armies and were double the number of the Poles who fought alongside their British and other allies on the Western Front.

@@HistoryHustle I don't find the commentary section on YT to be an appropriate place for lengthy discussions. To be short: sources, that Mr.Beever used to use for his works are at least questionable. The reasons are quite understandable: Mr.Beever is a product of cold war propaganda campaign, which was utilized heavily by both sides. Mr.Beever is also very keen for all kind of breaking news and sensations, which is also understandable for any passionate researcher. Regretfully, the results are his books, where he is citing or reusing Gebbel's propaganda, the "upscaling" of situational events to the global masses and wide usage of doubtful sources. It's fine for a belletrist or a script writer, but from a scientific point of view, that's bullshit. If you want to, you may easily find detailed information about it in the internet, it's not a secret or conspiracy. For the more or less reliable data I'd recommend using documents from the MODs and from the Nürnberg Trial. They are less fancy to read, but more correct.

Some of the Soviet officers (763) were sent to the eternal POW camp in Wroclaw... they lie in their war cemetery.... at Karkonoska Street. Two things I disagree with : about the Warsaw uprising, and that the Red Army wouldn't reach Berlin before Allies. About the uprising, the Soviets had no idea that it was planned, as the goals of the uprising were to establish the victory for the Polish government in exile. Besides, even if Soviets knew, the tactical situation was such that they couldn't maneuver in time without significant losses or simply being surrounded. About Berlin situation. Soviets committed almost 3 million men and women, by far exceeding any commitment that Allies provided on Western Front. So if shit hit the fan, the would use horses, or haul everything on their backs without Lend-Lease.

Hi Alex, Thanks for watching and taking the time to reply. Stating the Soviets on purpose didn't assist the Poles that's is a common belief but it's more nuanced. As for Berlin: I quoted a historian on this and you can indeed not agree. I believe it's true but it's not black and white. It's not that only because of the Land Lease Act the Soviets reached Berlin. The tremendous effort of millions of soldiers also determined this.

Really great video. The Soviets were stopped at Bautzen, because the Lausitzt is one of the great defensive positions of all time. The populace are Wends the farthest West Slavs. When all of Christian Europe turned on them during the fourth Crusade and tried to enslave them they retreated into the Lausitzt swamp which is loose sand and mud cut with little canals and streams. The farmers had served in Prussian and Saxon military for centuries and raided Denmark until pushed South by the founder of Copenhagen Bishop Absolom. The Soviets ran into an ethnic group that had picked their land for it’s defensive qualities and had a fighting tradition that went all the way back to the Viking Sagas. Not the path to try and get into Germany if you knew your history.

Heydrich in Cszechoslovakia gave the Factory workers a pay rise since the Czech arms factories were crucial. The British sent a Czech assassination team to kill him. The Czechs were too complacent and quiet for the British liking they knew the Nazi's would go crazy and make them hated and it worked. This thinking still exists today.

You hit the hammer on the head. The Soviets were cruel in East Prussia. The reason had nothing to do with anything else. The Yalta summit: That's where it was decided to disband the military clans of East Prussia after the allies defeat Nazi Germany in about 1945 or so. east Prussia was a detached province of Germany, and that a smaller seaside part of East Prussia will go to Russia, a part the Russia owned a fo just, or all of East Prussia for all of 5 years or six years in about 1775 or so. As everything in East Prussia was fair game as per the Yalta agreement, including revenge. In mainland Germany, the Soviet soldiers weren't all that bad in terms of behaviors. The Soviet soldiers riding on top of tanks and Soviet armored vehicles and trucks waved at German civilians as their military vehicles entered German villages and towns. German roadside civilians waved back at Soviet forces entering or driving through their town. Having said that, after midnight parties ended between former foes, the Soviet soldiers secretly knocked on doors in some neighborhoods of Berlin, and secretly raped about 500 women of Berlin to two thousand women in Berlin after their officers went to bed after partying with local town hall officials. By the time they reached mainland Germany, town after town, the the Soviet armies got into the bad habit of waving at civilians on the roadside in places like Romania, Poland. In German towns and villages, the Soviet soldiers and officers by mistake waved at roadside German men women and children who waved back at them. The mistake of soldiers in trucks and armored vehicles waving at German civilians started on entering mainland Germany with the Soviet soldiers, who got into this habit of waving at civilians in every country in eastern Europe. Because of "Operation BagRation", the Soviets mopped up and de-mined the tens of thousands of mines very quickly and were in various German towns very fast. Western forces were bogged down in places near France on within France, like Hurtgen forests and Dunkirk. The Soviets were cruel in East Prussia. Germans were waving back at entering Soviet armored vehicles in mainland Germany. Pope Ratzinger, switched to wearing civilian dress so none could recognize him. Hardly anyone knew that he was an ace anti aircraft gunner with anti- aircraft guns and shot down atleast five allied aircraftw and bombers.

Re: 7:15 A little of alternative history, that if not Lend Lease trucks etc ... Russians would not reach Berlin. Quite possibly. But then the war would go different way, perhaps Russians would stop at 1941 line and signed the separate peace with Germany. There was a reason why Western allies wanted Soviet Union to fight. There is some interesting story about setting the flags at the Brandenburg Gate. The first guy that came there on top of the gate was a Pole. He set the Polish flag and shouted for victory... There was also a journalist with a camera which took photos of this very moment. Then the Soviet officer came and he spotted the situation. He took a rifle from the soldier standing near him and started shooting to a Polish soldier. He missed and ordered his soldiers to kill the Pole on the gate. And they did. Well, they all knew each other quite well because they were fighting together against nazis for a long time. So the soldiers killed their Polish friend. The soviet officer pointed his pistol toward the journalist and ordered to destroy the camera and forget all the situation if he wants to live. The press guy did that. The officer ordered to put a huge red flag on the Brandenburg Gate. Then he allowed Polish soldiers to place there the second one. Much smaller Polish flag. The other journalist came by and took the photos we know now. The picture of the big Soviets flag and a small Polish aside. After WWII the journalist kept the whole story but after Stalin's death the political ruthlessness passed and political police got loose on the issues against the opposition (mostly imaginary one since all real was murdered years ago). The journalist started to spread this story about setting the victory flags on a famous Berlin gate.

These tragic crimes pale in comparison with what the racist Germans and their allies did to the Slavic peoples: mass genocide, rape, slave labor, ethnic cleansing and starvation. Though all crimes should be condemned, there was a clear desire for revenge with some of the troops (who had likely lost relatives during Germany's barbaric invasion of the Soviet union) here. There were some 25 million deaths of Soviet citizens thanks to the Germans. Most Westerners just don't understand this due to Western propaganda.

I will say only this to you. Imagine yourself, you are a citizen of Leningrad in 1941, yes you heard about Germany and see it as a Country full of history but ruled by evil Fascism. But that dosent matter, after all, War will not come to the Soviet Lands, everyone promised it. And even if such a power attacks, it would be meet by the iron fist of the Great Soviet Peasant and Worker Armies, ready for anything. But will you dont hold anything against Germany, after all you know it from a Paper map and some Films picturing their Capital Berlin. Moving on to 1943, your City is ruined, the hole European Part of the Soviet Union is invaded in a mad dash, which starts from the Baltic Sea and ends on the Very shores of the Black Sea. Your Family is dead, starved to death to be precise in a deadly Blockade, 20.000 People die Daily, and you can not surrender because the City is planned for Destruction by the invading forces, you did nothing to them, yet they came and ruined everything, killed your Family, Parents, mother, Father, Children and Shelled your own home. Starving on the Front line you hold on, with no hope, with no life left, your diseased body suffers from malnutrition, Scurbies and Skin disease. You are on the blick of dying every day, holding up the enemy with the little strength you have on. Yet trough a miracle your City is saved, the blockade is Broken and you are immediately send to a Field Hospital, declaring you to be in critical Condition and on the block of death. Yet after weeks and weeks, proper food and Shelter, Medical Care and housing. You are send on the front line again, year is 1944, you enter Germany. What would you do when your suffering reached the most critical human point?? Americans killed Hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Iraq and Afghanistan for 9/11, yet the Soviets restrained themselves to the most humane point in which they could. In their place, i would personally see Germany Burning and i would kill everyone which would show any sign of hostilities (just as the Americans in 2003) because hey, the people that shoot and killed our Comrades 2 days ago, were in fact Civilians in Civilian Clothing with a ()()()() Emblem on their Arm. So any Civilian can be a danger. Yet no one thinks of that.

Soviet soldiers were shot for raping, killing civilians, and looting. Stalin was no fool, and he was well aware that if soldiers robbed and raped in Germany, they would do the same when they returned home. It is shameful the amount of misinformation that this channel peddles. The Warsaw uprising was a political gamble by the polish resistance and the polish London government. The red army had no idea that the uprising was to take place and was actually crossing the Visla River to the south of the city. Had the polish resistance told the Red army about the uprising and captured atlest one bridge over the river (they captured Zero bridges) the red army could have entered the city and saved them. This whole "Stalin did not help" polish myth needs to stop

I stated: "... in which the Soviets didn't provide any asistance". The Soviets did throw some cargo out of planes that either fell in German hands of crashed on the ground. That is some assistance, so fair enough. Your conclusion: the whole channel deals in misinformation. Way out of proportion if you ask me.
