The Spanish Armada, The British Navy: from longships to battleships, part six

Under Sir John Hawkins, the navy Royal led the way in technical innovation. The tactics adopted against the Spanish Armada reflected the growing change in naval warfare from ramming and boarding to using guns at long-range. Gunners now played the critical role.

The key element in the wrecking of the Spanish fleet was the Gulf Stream current - unknown at the time..... The Spanish intended to move into the mid-Atlantic but having sailed the required distance, minus a 2 to 3 knot current they turned south just off the Irish coast.

While England has always chosen to see the defeat of the Spanish armada as a great victory, really the weather played a huge role. England saw this as a victory for the Protestant god, of course.
