I still have so much of Spain to explore, but I really struggle to not keep going back to Basque country! The people, the food, the wine, the beautiful sights everywhere with the Ocean, mountains and the Navarre/Rioja! It's my favorite place on earth so far. I did not expect to enjoy Bilbao as much as I did...but these little bars to duck into when it rains are so warm, fun and delicious and some are super funky and cool! There is also a metro which is pretty handy and the energy is high yet it's relaxing there too with all the riverside parks and walks. The Pintxo Queens are awesome and hearing locals talk about their home town with pride is really great....like when you had Osane sharing her love for San Sebastian! Another great foodie/culture video by Spain Revealed!

I think the one thing about San Sebastián that I didn’t understand until I went there, is that while there are these very high-end pintxo places which are deservedly famous, there are also just very basic hole-in-the-wall pintxo bars, where the food is equally excellent, they’re just not fancy. Just very, very good food.

I was waiting for this and it's sooo good to watch. James, could you do a video about Canary Islands and how it has so much more to offer than just Maspalomas and Las Americas? Las Palmas alone has enough bars and restaurants to dedicate a whole video to.

TRIVIA FOR TOURISTS: in Euskara (Basque language) the word for champion is “txapeldun”, 'those who are endowed with a txapela (the betret)', because that used to be the prize for the winner in the contests, so.... 😊 More? Leaving mythology aside, the “sorginak” were women “healers” and “pythonesses” (fortune tellers). During the Inquisition they were persecuted and judged as witches.

My CHOLESTEROL secret below... but first: I've been following you for years, and waiting for this video ever since. I live in Montreal, but I work for the Basque Government. I often go to Bilbao... in fact, I've just returned 2 days ago from my November mandatory Bilbao trip. I wished you had posted this video last week though 😅 My usual itinerary: - Mugi Taberna: plate of ham (without bread), green peppers and a cana - Then La Vina (your first place in the video) for 2 bocadillos de jamon and another cana. You could also swap this one for El Globo if it's sunny outside, and you can have their Cremoso de tortilla con salsa de trufa with a Txakoli. So many people outisde, great ambiance. - Then, if you are really hungry, a little burger at Hambueyseria Amaren, and, maybe, a glass of Reserva. - Two choices from here, you could head to El Sacacorchos, great ambiance, closer to a busy street, or Restaurante Abando, closer to the previous stop, and a great selection of pintxos. Maybe another Txakoli if you didn't make a stop at Amaren. Have a drink outside, near the windows. - Final stop, Plaza Nueva, Café Bar Bilbao. You may see old men having a drink and singing folkloric songs. This will make your day. Especially if you are a little tipsy. I'd recommend the Pintxos de Txuleta. I don't know why, but the meat they have has almost no nerve. Soft tender red meat to enjoy with a glass of Crianza, Reserva or, if lucky, Gran Reserva. Voilà... Now for the CHOLESTEROL. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol. The Framingham score (never heard of this before the doctor called me) was in the red. She wanted to prescribed pills. Now, early 50s, good shape, I didn't want to start being slave to pills. We made a plan.... My secret: OATMEAL every morning. Now, not the oatmeal in a bag with sugars like cereals, but Quaker Quick Oatmal with only one ingredient: oats (!). I don't like oatmeal with water. It's sticky and gluey. I use 50% non fat milk and 50% water. Then I add a mix of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, curry -equal proportion, all anti-inflammatory-, then star anis, cloves, ginger, cayenne pepper). I add 1 date (low sugar), banana, and nuts... I also start drinking a little less vermouth but increase wine (less sugar). I also stopped eating transformed food. Whatever doesn't rot on the counter, I don't eat it (like potato chips, sweets, heavily transformed food)... overall, I kept eating anything that is natural, even if its fatty (meat, cheese, etc.). After exactly one yea, my Faringham score was back in the green, back to normal, and I had lost almost 30 pounds without doing much. Just eating oatmeal in the morning, cut on chips and heavily transformed food, and kep most of my other habits the same (drinking wine, eating meat). I highly highly recommend. I still love my oatmeal in the morning. It put the stomach back in place, especially when I went out the night before. But the thing is ... patience. Oatmeal is good to fight cholesterol but 1) it wont happen overnight, 2) you need to stop refined sugar and transformed food. However, no extra habit change is necessary. I want to share my personnal experience... it works. Oatmeal makes miracle in the long run, with a little help, and you wont have to stop eating pleasant (but natural) food.

We went back in 5 days before Covid lockdown and returned on the day of Lockdown when flights were being cancelled everywhere. We had the best time in Bilbao. The Pintxos was sooooooo good. So mant to choose from. Gilda i could eat all day along with Beef cheeks and the Octopus. The people were amazing. Great places to visit and easy transport to the coast. Visited many of the places you did to eat as 20+ more. Incredible... Loved the Txacoli and the Vermouth. Once asked for Txakoli but in my English accent sounded more like chocolate.. hence a mug of hot chocolate served😂😂. Looking forward to returning.

We have visited San Sebastian and followed your recommendations on a couple of occasions but never thought of Bilbao. We will now :). I've never heard a visitor to the Basque Country complain about the food. In sharp contrast, people are often very unimpressed by the quality of the meals they've had elswhere in Spain, as well as in other European countries known for their food. Coming from Sweden, where the quality of restaurants is a very high one and cooks take their jobs utmost seriously, I've often been disappointed by the food I've eaten in parts of Europe famous for its cuisine and thought to myself "a restaurant like this never would have survived in my country". This is because I've ended up in tourist traps. Nowadays, I often manage to avoid them. You definitely can find wonderful food in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece. But it's nice to live in, or visit, a part of the world more or less void of tourist traps. The rest of the world has a lot to learn in terms of restaurant standards from the Basque Country and Scandinavia!

I tried to explain to a friend the difference between pinchos and tapas, but could not. What should I say to her? Hello from Canada.
@RosinaUriarte20252 ай бұрын
Hi @laurettecarolyne8599.Pintxos are a small bite, usually on a piece of bread and with a toothpick to keep it stuck on it (nowadays not all have the toothpick, but it is where the name "pincho", "pintxo" in Basque, comes from). Tapas, on the other hand, are small portions of food (different traditional dishes) on a plate. Tapas are sometimes free and offered with a drink in many parts of Spain (not in the Basque Country, where pintxos are originally from).
