"The Spanish Inquisition" is a series of sketches in Monty Python's Flying Circus, Series 2 Episode 2, first broadcast 22 September 1970, satirizing the Spanish Inquisition. This episode is itself titled "The Spanish Inquisition". The sketches are notable for their principal catchphrase, "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!", which has become a frequently used quote and internet meme. The final instance of the sketch uses music from the composition "Devil's Galop" by Charles Williams. Rewritten audio versions of the sketches were included on Another Monty Python Record in 1971.

"The Pit and The Pendulum", a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, is based on the Spanish Inquisition and its most famous torturer "Torquemada". Poe wrote short stories so it doesn't take long to read. it's definitely worth reading. The only clue I can give is that it has something to do with mice.

@@ianism3he’s Cardinal Biggles. It’s a continued reference to Biggles parody characters, such as Graham Chapman in the sketch "Biggles Dictates a Letter". Biggles being the titular character of the Biggles series of fictional adventure books about a character, James Bigglesworth, who was a pilot in the RFC in WW1 and the RAF in WW2. They were popular young reader books by W. E. Johns were both loved and criticized by many Brits, eventually being part of almost 100 novels and short story collections. It’s even funnier because in the “Biggles dictates a letter” sketch, he overreacts over learning the sexual orientation of his fellow squadron, and ends up shooting Algy (the character Algernon Lacy, his cousin) over finding out he was a “poofter”😅

they disagreed a lot over who should play who though. like, Cleese and Chapman always liked to play roles with shouting, so if there was only one it got complicated. it's one of the reasons why the show only lasted 4 years. like, later on Cleese really wanted the main role in Life of Brian, but the others agreed Chapman would be better.

I think this is definitely a case of the 'Python' before the 'Egg' ! Back in the 60/70's the 'Wizard Prang' ex Fighter Pilot Type was very much a Champion of the 'Establishment', so of course perfect for the Pythons armoury. It sometimes gets lost just how much of a social challenge they were, back in the day,with 'Life of Brian' almost ending up with them in court for Blasphemy, and banned in Ireland and Norway!

Possibly the funniest part is when, toward the end of a show(not this one, when the skit was introduced), they board a double decker and arrive too late for the routine. They broke so many conventions and tropes on MPFC. I was 11 first time viewing. Immediately recognized humor in absurdity.

One of my favourite sketches was on an episode with I think Mr Neutron. There is a part of the episode where Mr Gumby is trying to “put some flowers, NICELY, in a vase!” And then begins to hammer the flowers into a vase. As a joke it is quite funny, as historical content it is quite regrettable; The Spanish Inquisition was the only European organization with which the detainees, apart from having names and surnames, had a more than fair trial for the time (many of the crimes they regulated exist today), while in France (where the last person who passed through the guillotine was 50 years ago), England or Germany, hundreds of people who did not even have the right to trial were burned at the stake; They were arrested and burned directly. Spain was always ahead of any European country in terms of rights and freedoms, including the American Indians, who were considered Spanish from the beginning. You won't see that in any movie either.

At a summer camp I went to, there was the Counselors / Staff (college students and a few rising 12th graders) and Staff Assistants "Staffies" (rising 11th graders). Anyway at the end of the student drama presentations, they mimicked this skit lol. The Staffies were the Staffie Inquisition. I don't remember all of it but it was pretty hilarious. Like their weapons were things like tiredness and laziness. And then they tortured the Staff member with things like the "comfy chair" and "stuffed pillow" (that they were shocked wasn't more painful as they had "put all of the stuffing into one corner", the one they were poking her with). Then they left her in the chair, saying she would have to survive for a couple hours with nothing but coffee. Anyway, it was a funny experience. Sadly when I became a Staffie there 1.) the "staffie" nickname had faded and 2.) we didn't get to do that shit
