The Spanish Tercios
A Tercio was the military unit of the Spanish Empire during the time of the House of Austria and the Golden Age. They were famous for their resistance on the battlefield, the Tercios Viejos were the veteran and most experienced soldiers who formed the elite of military units and were the essential piece of the terrestrial and sometimes also maritime hegemony of the Spanish Empire. The Tercios were mainly made up of three types of soldiers in the same military unit, the Piquero, the Arquebucero or Musketeer and the Rodelero.
For 150 years they were the most powerful military force in the world and reaped military victories such as Ceriñola, Pavia, Bicoca, Mühlberg, Saint Quentin, Gravelines, Jemmingen, Mook, Gembloux, Breda, Empel, Nördlingen...
They were created in 1534 and with the arrival of the Bourbons the military concept changed, dissolving in 1704.
