Whatever the UK's equivalent to the US Library Of Congress is (National Archives, perhaps?), these Peel sessions need to be immortalized there 'cuz they are national treasures for the UK as they documented an era/eras in western popular music, how that music was propagated and consumed and how it shaped/reshaped the wider culture over the decades of late 20th and into the 21st Centuries (and especially for hearing Peel's voice in the intervals between the outros and intros)!

All of these Peel Sessions are National Treasures! Thanx! For the great feedback! & comments! About Bands like this!

You're absolutely right. Music shape people's life through culture, indeed. So in a way, it's part of history. You can take the heat of a decade through its music alone. (sorry for the bad writing, english is not my native language)

If anyone has the money and resources to take over John Peel's amazing collection as well as the all-important recordings of sessions for his shows, it is perhaps the British Library - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Library_Sound_Archive
@HermanWaldorf3 жыл бұрын
oh yes. And the quality of these sessions is on average very high (to me, for example, Joy Division's Peel Sessions are among the best things they recorded)
@devilsforkdigital14903 жыл бұрын
@@HermanWaldorf It's amazing how consistently great the Peel Sessions are, given they were not engineered by "inside" people of this or that movement but by BBC staff (so I believe). They are some of the best recordings around, at least of the punk/post-punk era which is arguably one of the most important in both music history and in terms of Peel's career and influence (and because it's "my" era ;).

They seemed brilliant and relevant then and even more so now. Take those Concrete Jungle lyrics - 22 years on, wtf has changed? Kids like my son still have to run from the knife and the law... The difference is that in the late 70s and 80s there were so many fantastic bands to express all that in incredible, danceable, memorable music. And now???

Wasn't there a ska scene in England in the 60's? Bands like the Specials,Madness, The Selector were part of a revival infused with the energy of punk....This review and the Tom Waits one are putting you into new heights....Nicely done Stripy!!

@@michielbrouwer3121 British mods listened to some Jamaican ska in the early 60's, alongside other styles of music. The hard mods and skinheads evolved a few years later from the mods, they listened to rocksteady and reggae.
