St. Thomas builds out his concept of human nature as the passions are taken up into the full ambit of human striving. As we turn to the virtues, we will see how these passions are healed and elevated by reason and grace. Ultimately, we will come to find that they assume their full dignity and light of what is highest in man.

I was brought up in the Augustinian Tradition. But I guess, the Holy Spirit wants me to have a relationship with Thomas Aquinas. After all, he was the saint on the day of my birth in the Old Calendar. Thank you, my dear Angelic Doctor for guiding me all these years. I am amazed at the level as to which you have illuminated these Specific Passions. If a visual chart could be made that illuminated each action, it would be such a virtuous blessing for the world, especially the mentally disabled. I suspect that Pope Saint John Paul II properly illuminated the Specific Passions in his book Osoba i czyn (Person and Act). Tymieniecka collaborated with Wojtyła on a number of projects including an English translation of Wojtyła's book Osoba i czyn (Person and Act). Be blesssed richly in Christ my friends. The inaugural volume of this collection is Person and Act and Related Essays. In many ways Person and Act constitutes Karol Wojtyła’s most profound and well-known philosophical work. Originally published in 1969 as Osoba i czyn, this work of metaphysics and philosophy is widely influential even though it is highly challenging intellectually and has heretofore posed difficulties for translators.

Were they given to us by a Creator who has ordered our beings to Himself? I don't know. This video doesn't tell me. I'm asked to fill in my own meaning. Very dangerous

The participation concept is taken by Aquinas from Plato and the Augustinian tradition, and is very important in Catholic theology

interesting. Question is what if you love something that is not good? Is it still love? I know these are not virtues here but i am confused. Can love be a negative passion if you love the wrong thing? If I do not love my ultimate good first (God) then is my love wrong? So the passion of love can be good or bad. but then what about sorrow? Can it be good or bad also? I think hatred can. WE can hate sin that is good. Does this make sense?

The passions are concerned with apparent goods and evils. One loves evil if one judges it to be good and hates good if it is judged to be evil. This is a state of disorder that results from or inclines to vice.

A Catholic critique of Orthodox theology (or any other non-intellectual approach) comes out here: you can't love what you don't know. If God isn't known in some way, then love of him is impossible. The retort might be that knowledge in fact corrupts love by mediating it, and true love is an immediate relation without the intermediary of intellect.
