Many times the studio version is better, but sometimes live wins. Joe Cocker did some great live covers. Kenny Loggins solo I can take or leave; meh. But his Alive! album is off the chain.
@MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio4 жыл бұрын
@@thepoeticbutcher3370 Don't you think that might depend on the song or the band? I've heard some bands that were lousy live. And some bands were all about the studio, like the Beatles. You couldn't play the second half of their albums outside the studio. And even bands that aren't like that have all kinds of nuances in their music that can't be reproduced live. Not to mention the fact that outside recording technology in the 60s wasn't typically very good, and live recordings from that era often sounded crude. For those bands that are good live, if you listen to the studio versions first, you get to hear the song as originally intended and then hear it as they expand on it live as well.

Yes, the studio version should be the cannon, the baseline. Why performances always reference back to the original recording even when the details are changed. And I would say this should give you your daily requirement of cowbell. Oh, and finally, this particular song was recorded much like the original live performance with everything else added on later, and yet it is a tremendously energetic record.

Have loved Spencer Davis Group for decades. One of my most often played CD's. So full of energy. Steve Winwood was/is amazing. Repeating myself, but I urge you to check out Small Faces if you like this kind of music from the 60's. The band was only in existence for three years, but put out a huge catalog of exceptional progressive music .Most Americans are not familiar with their work, but they proved to be a major influence on many later artists. They started out as a bunch of R&B loving ravers , see "Come on Children" & "You Need Lovin" (which was heavily copied by Led Zepplin in "Whole Lotta Love"), then progressed on to Psychedelic with "Itchikoo Park" & "Here Come the Nice", then finished with some unbelievably beautiful pop/rock songs like "Tin Soldier" (which has been ranked in polls as among top 10 singles ever), and my favorite "Autumn Stone". Unfortunately, because they were just so darned cute (none were taller than 5'5" and all good looking), they were unfairly labeled a "teeney bopper" group, and had a hard time earning the respect of critics. Sadly, their utterly amazing lead singer/guitarist/song writer, Steve Marriott, finally decided the only way to lose the "screamers (little girls) was to quit and form another, heavier band. He got together with another teen prodigy, Peter Frampton (who you have reacted to solo) who was also stuck in "teeney bopper" disrespect, and formed the Wonderful (but also sadly short lived) Humble Pie - whom you have also reacted to previously. Sorry for the lengthy remarks, but I think in the history of early British rock they were very important. Small Faces/Steve Marriott have been cited a a big influence on such others as Jimmy Page/Robert Plant, Tommy Iommi (Black Sabbath), Paul Stanley (Kiss), Jack White, Paul Weller, Oasis, even the Sex Pistols! Just recently I read where the excellent current band, Rival Sons noted they have only recently discovered Small Faces/Humble Pie/Marriott and LOVE them. They even did a tribute to Steve with their version of "Black Coffee" Everyone - please check them out, there are lots of video on KZbin!

There is megatons of his solo work through the years on KZbin, in fact too many wonders to choose from (and criminally underviewed). At age 78, he's putting out more including a new album releasing end of next month.
