I enjoyed Barakamon, but I LOVED Handa-kun. Easily one of the funniest anime out there and frankly it's extremely impressive to me that the author was able to completely pivot from a grounded feel good character study show to a straight up comedy. All the more impressive considering the vast majority of comedy in anime is completely garbage, there's maybe like thirty great comedy anime at most, and this managed to become one of them despite the fact the author had no previous experience writing comedy manga. Bravo. Also I actually didn't even realize this was a prequel until a couple years after it aired lol reflecting upon the fact they're both calligraphers named Handa.

Handa kun is SUPER INSANELY FUNNY when you watch it carefreely but if you start to think about it it’s just sad. I read the manga after watching the anime and my heart ached so much Handa’s life is just sad, and all the kids just pretend to care about him but they don’t really care. Handa only wants more friends, Handa is too pure 😭 kawafuji didn’t even get what he deserves. I also watched Barakamon after and I was outraged to see that Handa was still friend with kawafuji. Kawafuji ruined his life and made him into a paranoid person.

The reason for the hate is simple, they are entirely different plots and genres. While each good in their own way, and both works arguably gain from the lore of the other, ultimately both audiences would be dissatisfied with the other work. A work that would be great for both audiences however would probably be a spin off where the characters from Handa-Kun are shown adjusting to the reality of Barakamon. After all this would simultaneously show them reacting to Handa's life, while giving Barakamon fans another perspective of their favorite anime. This would also retroactively tie both anime together, likely leading to an increase in appreciation of the works by both parties.

barakamon is a story about finding yourself and your purpose in life, while taking it on light hearted manner and story, the lesson on it is really really meaningful, and hard to come by, it's rare anime story, i can put it up with mushishi for the quality, well animated, well written well voiced, a lot of thought had put in the characters, the setting, the plot, you can see how handa grow up after discovering his own style and people around him, learning about life and living with others, i keep watching it from time to time meanwhile handa-kun anime by all means not a bad anime, it's great compared to other anime at that time, it just water down story of barakamon, put it in highschool setting and all the character, story and setting are kinda predictable, all the character had the same arc with handa, misunderstood him at first, find handa kun "advice" unintentionally, and came to admire him, and that story keep repeating again and again, and the writer need of keeping handa-kun arc in the loop, because if his arc changed it'll affect others, and you can't make the same story again each episode, that's why at the school festival when he thought about bringing the wall down, the accidental burning of his doll bring the wall up again, it didn't change his character since the beginning, because the story can't have a progress in his character and keep it in the loop for continuity. i'm not saying handa-kun is bad, but comparing to barakamon it's almost impossible to reach the same quality and success. i get why some didn't like it, because they felt like they already see same anime structure again and again.

I don’t think it deserves hate but I definitely understand why it would upset people Depending on what you saw first, you hear about the “spin-off” and get excited because you loved x one so much, but then when you watch it you realize it’s an entirely different feel and vibe, and you were probably craving more of the one you watched before. It wouldn’t hit that spot for you Depending on the person it’s either *really not their thing* OR it can be if they’re *in the mood* , so perhaps watching it another time when they feel like it, would give them a better impression

I read Handa-kun before reading Barakamon, and I actually like Handa-Kun better. The anime cut corners, but it's still enjoyable, but the gold is the manga, it's really great. As a huge comedy fan, I really enjoyed and highly recommended reading it even without any knowledge of Barakamon.

I’m so late to the game here but here’s my 2 cents. I watched barakamon when it came out and I just didn’t like the characters that much, it was ok but only a high 6 of 10 for me. I came across handa kun by accident when looking for another show but I figured I’d give it a watch. I had zero idea it was a spin off of anything. I thought it was hysterical, as someone that has severe social anxiety, I related to a lot of the misunderstanding. I loved it. Only just a few days ago, I was looking for something new to watch and sometime I do this by looking up voice actors from other shows I like to see what else they’re in (just a fun way to find new things) so I looked up handas voice actor and saw both the shows next to eachother on his list. I then looked it up and realized they were the same character. Loving handa from handa kun i rewatched barakamon and like it so much more. I then, of course, rewatched handa kun, still hysterical but then you get to see all the little nods to barakamon like the basketball manga, pressed flowers, and the silhouette of the children when he’s getting his palm reading. It was a lot of fun.

Knew Barakamon was a sequel made before the prequel somehow. Handa kun was my crush in 2017 till date. He has a grand place in my hall of fame. I loved the anime. I remember watching every single ep twice or thrice in youtube before it was aired on animax asia. After finishing the series online, I watched it on TV when it was released and also watched every single repeat the very next day. Dude your content is so great and detailed. I completely agree with your statement. Sure, I found the first part of Handa-kun a little weird but after that I throughly enjoyed it. I then continued to watch Barakamon and I highly enjoyed that as well. As for a season 2, judging by the ending I don’t think it’s going to get one nor needs it. However, if it does ever come out I think we all will be jumping on it as soon as possible.

I watched Barakamon first a few years ago and loved it and then I just recently watched Handa-kun and loved it. Didnt even know they were the same characters until I read comments by the end of the series. But while watching Handa-kun I was occasionally thinking of another anime about a famous calligrapher. Lol and that was Barakamon and I was like nooooo wayyyyyy. I just thought calligraphers are a popular in Japan so I was like eh of course theres more than 1 series about famous young calligraphers unrelated to each other.

Handa-kun is different from Barakamon. I like barakamon, it is the most heart warming manga ive ever read. Handa-kun is not so good for me but since I love Handa from Barakamon, I still liked it, not as deep as barakamon but the point is we cannot enjoy them both to the peak of their potential if we always compare them. They cannot be reconciled to the point of consistency, the mangaka said, the mangaka’s commentary on this can be found in Handa-kun’s manga last volume

Barakamon and Handa Kun have a very different approach of comedy but both of them is my cup of tea in terms of comedy. Barakamon has a solid structure of the story where there is one main plot which is handa finding his own style of writing calligraphy. While handa kun have a wise structure of the story. It doest have a solid plot or solid goal of the story but the way it was made is very smart. Everyone misinterpreted handa's action in a positive way though handa didn't intended that way. If you prefer a comedy anime with solid plot you should watch barakamon. But if you want a school comedy anime then watch handa kun. and also I suggest watching barakamon first before watching handa kun.
