Reminds me of me practicing 2112 on my first drumset in 1979. Also with red hydros, but one less cymbal. Dark rosewood covered drums. Looks very similar. So many memories. Lived in an apartment, so I used to practice in a back corner of Anaheim Stadium's parking lot when I could. Security would come visit me on their golf carts once in a while to make sure everything was ok. Nostalgia...

Hi Mike! First of all, I really appreciate your videos and you are an amazing drummer. You really help out with preparation and it's only with your help (and my instructor ofc xD) that I've been able to get a distinction in grade 7 with 91 marks, in 2 years since I started out. Regarding preparation, I am taking an year for grade 8 prep. A thing I generally struggle with is time signature changes and odd time signatures which really screws me up in improv. What preparation strategy would you recommend for session skills and technical elements?
@MikeBarnesDrums5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chinmay, thanks for the lovely message! I'll def make some more videos about improv, time sigs etc so stay tuned! Generally speaking, it's all about wrapping your head around music theory so you know what you're dealing with, and then lots of experience playing, so just keep going and working hard man! Two years isn't very long in the grand scheme of things to get used to the sort of stuff required for a top mark at Grade 8. Keep going, learn your theory and I'll post some more content related to these things soon! Mike :)

I have no clue for the 9/16 area. No ideas to get the time signatures right. I can do 15/16 and the change to 75 at the near end though.
@MikeBarnesDrums6 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, thanks for watching! Yeah some tricky stuff in here! If it helps, I didn't really think hugely about the time signatures per se to learn this. I just looked at each musical phrase as a stream of notes, and listened plenty to get the feel. With stuff like this I think musicality and your ears has to marry with theory and counting to get you there. And slow it down! A lot! Although I'm not saying this is an easy one. Cheers man!

Hey Mike, do you have any advice for getting the 32-second notes at the beginning of some of the fills clean?
@MikeBarnesDrums5 жыл бұрын
Hi Connor, thanks for watching - mostly plenty of rudiment/physical skills practice! I'm a big believer that you need head (theory/note values/reading), heart (groove, feel, musicality) and hands (rudiments, physical skills) firing to get the most out of your music, and each practice session should include all 3! Also, I always think considering the sticking you're going to use can really help too. I've sometimes gone for "RLL" at the start of these phrases to facilitate playing it more smoothly. I'll do a talk-through "FULL LESSON" video on this tune soon! Cheers man :)
