@bendu828210 ай бұрын
Uh Jay one problem with your criticism. Sandy’s time travel shenanigans caused a Multiverse event , by sending her past self back in time she created an alternate timeline where her & SpongeBob know each other as kids to be honest this isn’t the first time SpongeBob has time travel shenanigans either. Squidward created a time loop when time traveling early on in the show since he introduced jelly fishing to cave man SpongeBob & Patrick in prehistoric times only to go back to the present and find out by SpongeBob & Patrick that he invented Jellyfishing which originally would make no sense since this is a sport he personally hates. There is also all the future time traveling alone SpongeBob & Patrick did in that mermaid man and Barnacle Boy episode where they originally changed the past causing Man Ray to take over the sea only to try to go back in time again and undo this reality so that their old one can come back but they continuously fail to stop Man Ray causing multiple furture versions of them to come back to the past from alternate futures multiple times creating temporal time clone variants from various alternate timelines. There is also SpongeBob & Squidward meeting bubbles that interdimensional space Dolphin who monitors time and space in SpongeBob 2 where they distract him from his job so Jupiter gets destroyed. There is also the joke where Patrick tells Sponegbob he invented a parallel universe when showing him a mirror of himself which SpongeBob ignores but we find out right after that the mirror reflection of SpongeBob is actually a different SpongeBob from another universe. So this just goes to show that SpongeBob has always been doing time travel/Multiverse shenanigans. At the end of the day all the shows contradict each other especially the main line SpongeBob show’s canon, because SpongeBob itself doesn’t have much of a continuity, the continuity in SpongeBob’s universe is only relevant based on the episode.

To be honest SpongeBob making the formula also clearly contradicts the episode "Friend or Foe?" (still an episode vaguely a part of original SpongeBob, shown to the public in 2007) where Plankton and Krabs canonically been friends prior to their rivalry as kids, which began with them MAKING THE FORMULA. Krabs and Plankton both discover the secret formula together (naming it the "Plab Patty" as a spin on their names) and then when they fought on it, thus ripping the original recipe in half, both of them go their separate ways providing a different conclusion to how the delectable dish would be made, aka inventing the chum burger and the krabby patty since one went with homemade ingredients while the other went to science. That completely gets contradicted with BOTH krabs and plankton learning that SpongeBob made the first krabby patty recipe in Kamp Koral... either way that spinoff series is the death of the original canon.

Perfect, genuinely a spinoff of Sandy, Squidward or Mr Krabs for that matter sounds better than the actual spinoffs we've gotten. Like who genuinely gives a f*cking sh*t about Kamp Koral. And as of the Patrick Star Show it's way too weird, bizarre and is not grounded in it's world or characters for that matter for me to not even Care. The characters in these shows are not fleshed out at all and are the exact same show just one is SpongeBob in camp, the other is Patrick. Overall this is one of the worst universe ever, say what you want about the MCU but at least it's not just the same.

I have a funny theory about the broken canon with Patrick’s parents. His _real_ parents are the ones that have been around since the beginning of the main show. However, because Patrick is such an idiot, he constantly mistakes Cecil and Bunny from The Patrick Star Show as his parents and spends long periods of time with them and in turn, they also mistake him for their son. This is easy to believe considering how in the original episode where Patrick’s real parents debuted, he spent the whole episode with a completely different set of starfish and didn’t realize they weren’t his parents until they said their names. Those starfish also didn’t remember they didn’t have a son until then, so this kind of thing is pretty common in the starfish community. It would be funny if they did an episode about this in The Patrick Star Show, where Patrick and his fake family realize this mistake and Patrick goes back to live with his real parents again, only for them to forget again at the end of the episode or something.

I seriously don't understand why they keep making new SpongeBob episodes and why they're so stubborn on continuing the spin-offs, It seems like such a waste of money. Sure they may be getting a little bit of extra money from the revenue, but as you stated before anytime anyone thinks of SpongeBob they always think of the first 3 or 6 seasons. On most of the SpongeBob official social media accounts you'll see pages and pages of people complaining every single time they post anything from a more recent season. It's not even just the die-hard fans, not a single casual fans I know irl has either enjoyed anything recent or simply doesn't watch it. The most common thing you'd ever hear people say is that they miss old SpongeBob, so why not bring it back? Hear me out, what if they cancel the two spin-offs, give the show a series finale (I'd recommend something that takes place after the 1st SpongeBob Movie) and just air reruns indefinitely? I'm pretty sure at LEAST 80% of people who want to watch SpongeBob will throw on an older episode on Paramount+ or watch old DVDs, so if anything reairing older episodes instead of super recent stuff would probably bring in more viewers anyways. It's not like they don't have enough episodes, they have two entire decades worth of content. Not only that, but it would be way more cost effective to just reair everything they already made instead of making anything new, and they could use the money that would normally be spent on SpongeBob on new projects or revivals of other shows. I guarantee merchandise is where most of SpongeBob's profits come from anyways. The Peanuts series for the longest time didn't make anything new simply because they didnt need to, they survived solely on conmercials, merchandise, reairings of their older specials, and reruns of their comics. I really feel like SpongeBob could very easily last indefinitely this way. They. could keep making video games, toys, box sets, try to get a more prominent presence theme parks like Universal, and occasionally make stand alone animated shorts. Im not a business man, but I really feel like Brian Robbins is going about this all wrong. Cable is slowly dying, most people use streaming apps, and most people stream older episodes anyways. It almost feels like he's intentionally trying to sabotage the series with how much his "vision" has messed with the show's legacy. I feel like the current state SpongeBob is the worst its ever been, even worse than it was during Seasons 7 and 8. Good video as always man.

It's totally fine if the writers want to have loose continuity within the show and not have much cohesion between episodes. The problem is you can't make a good connected universe if you do that. People like connected universes because they can rely that everyone and everything in it will stay relatively consistent so it all makes sense that it exists in the same universe. I also feel like Nickelodeon is taking advantage of their young audience they are aiming at. Spongebob has been going on long enough that a lot of kids today probably don't know the original lore and Nick believes that this gives them the freedom to do whatever they want with the show and characters. It's like historical revisionism, except with a cartoon show.

I think the issue is as time has gone on we've started to get fans of the original series to physically work on the show, and they don't like the middle seasons, like many fans, so they use the excuse "well, we don't see canon as a thing we have to follow exactly" so they don't have to have the tone of the show fit with those middle seasons. This also explains why the last few seasons have just been reference, reference, reference, as again, these people grew up as fans. And as fans that saw this as a massive inspiration (clearly), they seemingly don't understand why the best episodes, scenes, and jokes are the best, just that people really like them. So you got this awkward situation where they don't want to emulate the middle seasons, and want to do callbacks to the older seasons, but have a vastly different way of approaching every aspect of making a cartoon, so the show feels disjointed as of late.

@@TheAlphaJayShow Personally, I think if Nickelodeon were willing to subvert their formula of episodic comedy(which clearly isn't working very well anymore) and get some creative writers on board who understand the charm of the first three seasons, I think SpongeBob could tell a really good serialized story with stakes, continuity, and character growth, like in Amphibia or The Owl House. But they'd never go for it. The SpongeBob SquarePants franchise is one of Paramount Global's primary cash cows. The executives would never take a risk and shake things up with their most popular franchise in a way that would aim at an audience of all ages rather than their target demographic that mostly includes children, even if it's the merch making them all that cash as opposed to the TV show, which has plummeted in popularity over the years.

The multiverse trend has become a fatigued and overrated means of telling a story, particularly the multiverse stories that exist as a means of milking a franchise/existing just for fanservice compared to shows like, say, Fionna and Cake from Adventure Time (oh, include Adventure Time as well since the multiverse concept was introduced during the series) or the Spiderverse movies. What these executives don't realize is that the multiverse concept exists to build up the characters from a main universe/to give characters development, but most of the time, executives have led the multiverse to becoming, "Wow, look at that lore and thag different version of a character! So cool!", instead of existing to build up characters. The most that's changed in terms of SpongeBob are newly established dynamics and the animation style, the rest of it is pure annoyance, fanservice, and the such. This is coming from a huge SpongeBob fan that broke VCRs due to my love for Spongebob (rewinding to watch moments I enjoyed repeatedly), by the way. I enjoy what some of super-modern Spongebob does, but I still see it as a missed opportunity to just keep it as a show that ended after its first theatrical release, because at least like Gravity Falls, Stephen saw it as a means of ending the show on his terms, but as long as corporate Nick does what it does, it's gonna milk Spongebob until its last day on the air in, say, 4023, whatever. As long as Spongebob continues to take no risk and ride off of references without understanding why such a reference would be impactful for the viewer (like if there was a reference to "Hooks" and Spongebob makes a comment about never going on one again [which would show character development] vs. plopping the King Neptune crown in a pile of assorted crap on a shelf), Spongebob will just, well, be itself: a show continously draining by the day as it loses its milk. Spongebob could've gone the Gumball route, or hell, at least found a way to make characters change to where they would be compelling for viewers, but nope, Nick would rather the creatives play it safe and keep the characters static for the sake of brand-recognition and merchandise sales. If Nick really wants a universe of their own, they should've aimed to finding an original show that could fit that role, and yes, I can at least understand *WHY* they want SpongeBob to take that role, but Spongebob just is not the show to do it. SpongeBob is like the Simpsons and Family Guy, there is no such thing as continuity and status quo is God, so trying to interject any form of continuity by diving in head-first is by no means a healthy venture. If anything, say, shoving the two redneck characters from 'Kamp Koral' into Spongebob is just forcing us to be reminded that SpongeBob has spinoffs rather than it being something to be enjoyed. I doubt with Spongebob for so long being seen as a static show with the lightest continuity imaginable would suddenly change in popularity if they interject continuity by shoving their spinoffs and main show together. The damage has already been done, they went into this multiverse venture very poorly. Nickelodeon has been afraid to do *anything* creative since Spongebob became their corporate cow, and the only times they have done so is if they manage to get the same ratings as Spongebob (or even higher), and they too suffer the same fate. Overall, corporatism has been tainting art for years, and it isn't going to stop, either as long as they continue to have their properties receive attention and profit. Some things are better ended on their own terms, regardless what a corporate company says. Taking risk is not always a bad thing, because after a while, people will want something new, that's just the human condition, but alas, when children are so easy to make cash off of, it's no wonder that companies like to take advantage of them and see them as things to shove garbage in front of and expect them to consume it without problem, regardless whether it tastes like candy or vomit. *Spongebob should have died after the first movie. Period.*

Don’t forget that about Avatar and tmnt were also beating SpongeBobs ratings ever since they first premiered in 2005 and 2012. However due to the massive popularity of avatar Nick decided to do a spin off named legend of Korra before the sponge had its own sequels. For the turtles, they had no sequel but rather a new show called Rise of the tmnt in 2019 which most people say didn’t really care for but sum casuals still enjoy the art style, action and comedy. Fairly odd parents would never have sequels since it’s just a one show that rival SpongeBob during their early glory years until they eventually had a live action reboot on paramount + that we know should have NEVER happened but despite it I still enjoy watching what made the first seasons of both shows so memorable.

In the episode where Plankton falls in love with Mr. Krabs’ grandma, Mr. Krabs says it’s a family recipe. The biggest issue for me with a lot of the newer episodes of SpongeBob episodes is that they're clearly written by fans of the classic show. So you'll get callbacks to characters or moments that appeared in like one or two episodes, and that stuff will get elevated to get their own episode. Stuff like Bubble Buddy, DoodleBob, Bubble Bass, Sea Bears, My Leg Guy, Ms. Puff and Mr. Krabs dating, Handsome Squidward, etc... and all of this just feels like fanfic. Like, it doesn't feel like a natural episode of the show that the original writing team would've written. The original couple seasons, and even quite a few seasons into the post-movie era, NEVER did callbacks like this. The closest I can think is having a season 1 episode introduce a new character like Sandy, the Flying Dutchman, or Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, who would go on to be reoccurring characters later, but they stopped that after, again, like season 1 once the cast was pretty filled up. But now they'll reference fan-favorite classic episodes, or memes and it just feels like I'm watching some guy's SpongeBob fan fiction.

I wonder now that Spongebob’s entrenched itself into immortality people are eventually going to start to look at it like they used to do Catdog: no one wants to work on it, yet Nickelodeon’s so plugged in to how legendary Spongebob is and how much money it made that everybody sees it as a punishment to be asked to work on it. *"Nah. Nick tried to ram it down everybody’s throat, but nobody liked that show, including the people who made it. At the studio we considered it all but a punishment to be asked to work on it. The best analogy I have for the spongebob franchise universe (old episodes, new episodes, movies, spinoffs, games) is that it's a series pf bubbles. These bubbles are their own "universe", and sometimes bubbles are contained within bubbles. The bubble and people living inside the bubble won't know they're inside one. But those with a bubble inside of their bubble know of and can even interact with said bubble. Idk, I can see it but it's kind of hard to explain. There might even be additional factors, like surfaces where two bubbles touch - the random, non-canonical references perhaps

I just came up with a theory on why the lore is just not so consistent and stuff, and yes I know the actual reason is just because the show writers are lazy probably, but I mean like a probable canonical reason, anyways my theory is that season 1 where sandy and spongebob first meet takes place before sandy sends a past version of herself in the past, which I thought could be a clone version of Sandy herself that sandy aged backwards to a certain age until she got ready to send the clone into the past, after sending the kid clone sandy into the past, somehow original sandy screwed up the future and accidentally made a parallel timeline that is different than her own timeline which could start in the future seasons past season 4,5, or 6, maybe 7, thats why adult sandy in the patrick star show has glasses despite sandy not having glasses in the main show and could be a reason why big sister sam was replaced by Squidina and why Patrick's parents look different or the fact time travel happens constantly in the patrick star show because there was technically time travel in the past from kid clone sandy which is an adult in the patrick star show. And I'm quite still upset nickelodeon did Stephen Hillenburg so dirty by going against his dying wishes of even making spinoffs or prequels or sequels to the origina spongebob, but as soon as he died they did anyways.

I know Hilenberg's SpongeBob story world was pretty good. In its early days, it actually did tell a story, and it was as wholesome as it was goofy, while at the same time referencing real life hopelessness for us adult folks. It was *good.* Now...? Now it's just... Televised ADHD. Newspaper comic strips animated. Background noise for kids so they leave mommy and daddy alone. Never once have I seen recent "comedy" cartoons have any kind of respect for lore, storylines, and alliteration unless it's for an immediate punchline. It's... Honestly disappointing, as far as I'm concerned, but I'm also a writer who never invested in hyperbole and short-term entertainment. I prefer the more traditional storytelling of long arcs, linear progression, and lasting character development. Old SpongeBob *kind of* did that? At least, everything made sense and had references and relationships brought up as jokes and plot twists in later episodes... Now it's just episodes of distraction. "Here, have this funny episode that has nothing to do with everything else around it so you forget about it a couple days later if it isn't memed!" It ends up getting recycled later, since it's *so* random that there's really nothing new to be presented. It's very... Samey. ...I'm probably harsh, but I watched something I watched come into the world as something new and fresh and funny get turned into something honestly just noise as soon as the original creator passed away and the suits decided to squeeze money out of it. Makes me sad.

Or that cartoons are being watched more and more by teens/adults? People just expecting "more" from cartoons because Disney was so good? (Emphasis on "was") I'm really curious. When I was growing up, cartoons didn't care and expected no one else to care. There were shows like 'Gargoyles' that had extensive lore and careful story planning, but then most of the other cartoons were like, for example, 'Josie and the Pussycats' that had twin siblings but every other episode they seemed to forget they were twins and would be like "I'm the older sister here!" "I'm the older brother!" Like they didn't even have the 'Scooby-Doo' multi-universes/shows excuse, it was the same cartoon, same season lol
@Trist23310 ай бұрын
Probably people expected more after Gravity Falls or Adventure Time. Even Regular Show and Milo Murphy's Law had to made a story-driven arc because of how lore driven shows are much popular. Also in modern era, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia or Jojo is more known than modern cartoons because of today's cartoons can be said as "too safe".

This is my headcanon. SANDY TIME TRAVEL: Having her younger self go to camp with Spongbob creates a split timeline. Future Sandy from the main timeline can still interact with her but the future of kid sandy's timeline is now going to be very different since she's now friends with kid Spongbob. PATRICK'S PARENTS: "Wow son you recognized us this time!" Remember that? I think their was a big portion of Patrick's childhood and early adulthood where he just wondered off and ended up with another family he thought was his own and didn't rediscover his birth Parents until later which they just shrugged off as "That's just Patrick being Patrick! 😂"

Maybe that will finally kill SpongeBob. I HATE to see SpongeBob die like seeing a beloved pet die, but holy shit they gotta put the show out of its misery. Fuck dude even the voice actors aren’t able to keep up. Even Tom fucking Kenny is getting a bit too old to keep doing the SpongeBob voice. Let the poor man go do Fionna and Cake season 2 or something.

Nickelodeon then: "We want to help make creator-driven shows that are all unique" Nickelodeon now: "DO YOU ALL LIKE SPONGEBOB?? GOOD, CUZ YOU'RE GETTING MORE OF IT!" It's possible that Sandy's time travel/manipulation created an entirely new timeline. This means that from the moment Sandy sends her younger self to Camp Coral, the timeline splits into two timelines. A timeline in which the events from the original series take place and a timeline in which the events from Camp Coral take place.

This doesn’t mention that in later episode I think called friend or foe there was given backstory on Krabs making the secret formula. More continuity problems are there are multiple characters all referred to as old man jenkins each with different designs. Also the spongebob movies add a ton of timeline confusion (where its placed, Neptune vs Poseidon situation, patty wagon in both movies, etc) trying to think of more examples, fun vid btw, need to check out more modern spongebob
@joe-lewisjavonnelson152310 ай бұрын
Spin-offs can also be free to have a different tone compared to the main show. For example, Cell at Work Code:Black is allowed to explore darker themes that the main series (Cells at Work) couldn’t due to the former having a different age demographic. I know that both are anime, but that’s the best example I can think of.

So, I don't mean this in an aggressive way, I'm honestly asking. Who actually cares about the canon for SpongeBob SquarePants? Surely it's currently working in the same system that The Simpsons has used for decades? It just picks what counts and what doesn't on an episode-by-episode basis. Want Krabs to be a chef at the camp? Sure! Want him to be a manager? That works too! Its like how details such as Homer Simpson's childhood gets changed around if they want to do an episode in the past. It's a status quo show, with the odd bit of continuity. Same as when Lisa became a vegetarian on The Simpsons.
@msthecommentator286310 ай бұрын
It cracks me up because, by making it so SpongeBob was the one to develop the formula at an early age, they opened up another issue with the continuity since Mr. Krabs and Plankton developed the formula accidentally when they were children, and the resulting fight over who was responsible is the reason why they don't talk to each other anymore. It was supposed to be the driving force behind their feud and why Plankton feels obligated to have it.

Thing is, when I've seen these shows revealed, I already discredited them and self-labeled them as non-canon. I view them as different timelines, and the episodes that include the characters from other shows... um, I really don't consider them canon either. Kamp Coral and the Patrick Star show absolutely broke the canon set in seasons 1-3, and pre-SoTR movie. I wish they were different rimelines instead of being "the same universe", I'd like them more if they were different timelines.

The amount of inconsistencies is EXACTLY WHY the main creator of the show did not want Spongebob babies because if babies were to exist then they would have to find a way to give everything reason of which clearly the current showrunners failed at.

Well, that is to be expected . The truth is times change and this show will keep getting milked forever. The original SpongeBob SquarePants died a long time ago. I remember being so disappointed as a kid because I was hyped to see how he would develop. Also the name of the show made me figure he would eventually rule the planet, thus making it "Planet Sheen"
