Best way of learning our needs is often by trial and error. At least that's been my experience. It isn't easy, up front to know exactly what works best for us. Sounds like you've made needed improvements in your bed. That's a great step forward, IMO. Tip: Fat wood can be split into much smaller strips and still be effective. If you split a piece of your firewood into kindling sized pieces that would also be a help. As is saving scrap paper to crumble for a bit more fire starting assist. Mentioned this because fatwood, in the wild, is scarce here. Learned many years ago (long before it became available in stores), how to ration out what I found for as many fires as possible. Still do the same, even with purchased fatwood. Thanks for sharing your maiden voyage. God Bless.

Thanks. I am trying to iron out a configuration that works best for me. The Renaissance Festival was a good launching point as there were products and services available should there be a need. I am sorting this out as quickly as I can, hopefully folks enjoy it!
