I have EDC'd the Police4 G-10. When I first got it, it seemed comically large. But then a strange thing happened. I used it. And I realized that while a Delica or Dragonfly will work for things like cutting up 10 cardboard boxes into pieces small enough to fit in a recycle bin. A knife like the Police4 is FAR FAR superior in ease of use. I mean just from a logical standpoint you have more sharp edge to work with, you can cut more before needing to sharpen because you're spreading the edge abrasion out over a greater area than something like a Dragonfly or Delica. But beyond that, it's just easier to cut things with a bigger blade. You may or may not believe it, but you get used to carrying a large knife pretty fast. And the people who are going to be freaked out by a big knife, will likely be just as freaked out by a small knife too.

Hi Nick, I enjoy your reviews which are a good balance of the practicality side of the review and prospective along with your quick wit and sometimes really funny comments. I felt compelled to comment on your statement that you couldn't really understand the purpose for such a large knife as the Police model, well I think you couldn't see the forest for the trees on this beauty. What I mean by that is you should consider that simply by the name this knife was and still is primarily designed as a self defense weapon for anyone but originally was intended for use by law enforcement personnel. I have been retired from active service as a law enforcement officer for 12 years but I can tell you that I started to carry one to use on duty as a back up weapon in 1987 along with many of my colleagues on the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and I never had cause to need to change it for another as I never found a better one for that purpose. So in closing, I did ramble a little bit but I think that you surly could appreciate the name on that model if you had felt the feeling of security that one provided while riding along inside the pocket of your uniform trousers. Keep Up The Good Work and Best Regards Sergeant K.W. Ryno Retired.

I carry an Endura or Endela, but one reason I like a longer blade for EDC is food prep and opening bags of corn/chicken/pig feed. A long blade allows you to cut open both sides of the top of the bag and poor the food out quickly- if you can visualize that. I set the feed bag down, pull out a longer blade knife and cut the top of the bag through both sides so I can pour the food out. Yes, you can use a smaller knife and pinch the bag together, a longer blade is just faster. Anyway, that why I carry a longer blade EDC knife, but I'm on a "hobby farm".

I picked one up a few weeks ago on sale because it is discontinued now, on Knife Center, in K390 with a fully serrated edge. It is very large, but you have to carry it to appreciate it. The more you carry it, the more practical it becomes. I use it daily from food prep to steak cutting. Opening packages, cutting cardboard down, small bush branches, pruning, cutting up fruit, and on and on. Just be sure to wipe it down after use or you'll get a patina on the blade. It is K390, and like Nick said, it's not suited for damp or corrosive environments.

For clearing blackberries from hiking trails the longer blade is perfect. Try that with a dragonfly and you’ll spend time pulling thorns out.

I have used my Manix 2 XL to clear the odd vine hanging into a trail. Not my first choice, but it's better than nothing. In my experience, 18" is about the starting point for not having to pull thorns out when it comes time to dealing with blackberry vines, at least if you're dealing with more than one or two at a time... I resorted to using a massive brush axe for one stand. It was about a 20'x20' area full of mature vines about 10 feet tall. I started on it using a 12" machete, and ended up looking like I had pissed off a bobcat by the time I got fed up and grabbed the axe.

I guess I should clarify, at least some of my trail use is on weekend warrior trails with year long potential snowflake storms. The ability to quickly pack the portable machete and put on my most innocent smile (with or without a tug on the pants zipper) keeps the millennial military from engaging. The manix XL gets less love than it deserves.

For me, the handle has to be big as I have XL hands and a delica/bugout/PM2/PM3 will disappear in my hands. A knife that has that big of a handle will usually have a rather huge blade insterted into it. That said, I carry a Caribbian as that has the most balance when it comes to handle to blade to comfort ratio. Great review Nick!

I absolutely love my Police 4 LW. The blade is unbelievably sharp, and holds and edge extremely well. I thoroughly enjoy opening packages and mail with it because of how completely overkill it is for those tasks, and the ease at which it cuts through nearly anything makes me laugh as I'm using it. An aftermarket scale option would be nice. Something like titanium or carbon fiber. I don't hate the factory scales, but the color is kinda goofy, imo.

The thin profile and light weight makes it perfect for me to carry in the pocket or clipped inside the waistband regardless of what kind of pants I’m wearing. It carries like a small knife but gives you almost the capability of a full sized fixed blade knife. The only downsides to the knife are that the K390 rusts easily and that the knife is large enough to have an intimidating look and depending on where you live that is worth considering. That’s the only issue the size presents in my opinion. It very practical and useful. I put a titanium deep carry clip on mine but aside from that the factory fit and finish was perfect. Great action and nice stiff lock.

Remember me of my first adult life knife : the opinel "éfilé" number 12. An actual 12 cm blade. Let's say it was a 105mm because I've always grind a drop point my opinel. Loved loved it for cooking and eating. Eventually gave up with it because the bladestock was so thin and flexible, almost like a filet knife for fish, the very worst for edc (plus, it was only a crappie opinel) Honestly, 10cm is the shorter knife in my cooking setup, and it's so short it almost doesn't get used, 15, 20 and 25 cm are the real deal... But one thing I tend to use my pocket knife a lot for is eating meat on a wooden board, mainly because I am often too lazy to get my 6 inches steak knife and maintain its soft Vg10 edge. I edc'ed a native 5 which was obviously very too short for slicing meat, so I get a Super freek, 3.5 inches are good, but I find myself often having fat at the base of the blade, and we know that hot washing pivots is a bad idea, especially wist rusty steels. Plus, it's not the sliciest geometry. So maybe this police blade is for me, also I have pretty gigantic hands, over 10 inches from thumb to pinkie, wich is the size of this knife. Have to try it.

Had to send mine in to golden. The blade was hitting the pins within the scales, which was causing dull spots on the edge. Hopefully they’ll fix it. But they seem to sort of side step any sort of acknowledgment of a potential design flaw. But I’ll bet they’ll just sharpen it a bunch and thin the blade edge so the edge won’t hit the pins.

They'll probably just say it's okay. No manufacturer issue. Don't bring the issue up. You're crazy for seeing something. Others are crazy for seeing something. Then after A LOT of public pushback theyll take the knife back, say they're doing an unnecessary favor, redo a lot, and send something out that is barely better than what was out before. Don't mind the price vs the competition. Obviously, I am done with spyderco knives. But I still carry a slyscz bowie and even still argue with myself about getting a kapara.

Between D2 and 5160. It has pretty much all of its chromium in solution but not a lot of it. Thankfully it patina rather than rust in most cases
@dylanemeraldgrey
@dylanemeraldgrey 3 жыл бұрын
In my experience D2 is much more stain resistant. If I leave a fraction of drop of water on it, the K390 will start developing rust. If you keep it totally dry, it won't rust, but will probably still patina. I don't think the environment makes much of difference unless you live on the water or something. The steel makes it worth the trade-off though. The factory edge is good and you'll enjoy it, but after you sharpen it once or twice, eventually it will make you say wow, or at least nod in appreciation. It takes a fine edge, but there is still some toothiness to it. Very nice for slicing.

When i got my first Spyderco i picked up an police 4. i needed a big knife because it was, when i was at work were i also lived during workdays, liteary the only knife i would have. No kitchen knife, no diposeble cutter ect. Just this on knife. And i wanted it to be big enough to cut everything but jet not to be as cumberson as a fixed blade. Now i am every evening at home and the need for an true Allrounder vanished and i got smaller knifes for work and edc.

@@tidge879 Yes, unfortunately there have been some serious quality issues; badly formed jimping, uneven grinds, scales not lining up with backsprings, loose pocket clips among other issues. Luckily HH have excellent customer service - I know that at least 24 of the batch have been returned to them. Sal is aware of the issue and said he's following it closely, clearly the Maniago maker responsible for them is having CQ problems. I've got the VG-10 version and its fine. That being said, I'm still going to sell it when I clean out all of my mid tier stuff that I no longer want. It is such a dedicated self-defense knife that it is mediocre in most other areas. If you want a blade over the 3.5" mark, it just seems more reasonable to get a fixed blade.
