From director Jehane Noujaim ("Control Room"; "Startup.com"; "Rafea: Solar Mama") and producer Karim Amer ("Rafea: Solar Mama"), "The Square" follows Magdy, a member of the Muslim brotherhood, Khalid Abdalla, an Egyptian actor who played the lead in "The Kite Runner" and the charismatic Ahmed, each young activists who have sought for the last two years to build a better Egypt. Armed with nothing more than cameras, social media, deep consciousness, and a resolute commitment to change, the film captures the immediacy and intensity of the protests in Tahrir Square.
Winner of this year's Best Documentary Award at 2013 International Documentary Awards, the Best Documentary at the Dubai International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival Documentary People's Choice Award and the Audience Award at the Montreal International Documentary Festival. An earlier version of "The Square" won the Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The film was also an Official Selection at the 2013 New York Film Festival.

Five years ago I have watched this film with a group of friends in our first year of university. Then as now I am completely shaken by it. The strength, willpower and determination of people who are fighting against an unjust regime is something to be admired, but there should not be a need for this in the first place. It requires an immense amount of strength to go against the mainstream and question the rule of those in power. Be it in Egypt then or in Hong Kong now. Stay strong and remember there are millions out there who support your cause who you cannot see, but we are there. Continue your fight for a better future.

The Egyptian uprisings of 2011 to remove a dictatorship were amazing ~ but after the first fall, just seemed to replace one dictator with another ... establishing any semblance of a democracy within an Islamic theocracy seems quite the challenge to achieve ~ makes it all the more worthwhile when a democracy is finally created ... sadly, I haven't kept up ~ not really sure what's happening there now ...

It seems to me that the real problem is that most people, worldwide, are taught to believe that our universe is the rightful property of a benevolent dictator--god--and that we (its children) have an obligation to obey and serve that entity in very specific ways.
