The best way I've ever heard anyone describe the purpose of bracing with a deep inhale before a rep was to think of a water bottle. If there's no water in the bottle then you can easily crush it and bend it in half, but if you try to do that with a bottle full of water (i.e. a belly full of air) its it's much harder to bend the bottle.

Thanks for a great example of coaching: starting from the ground up, watching, instructing, listening, affirming, encouraging constant improvement. I got my initial training from Sully at Greysteel in the Detroit area, trained for a year, then got out of the habit for a year. Been back at it for 15 months (at age 66 now), and am stronger than I've ever been in my life. My thanks to every person who encourages others to begin and continue in this discipline. You are truly life savers.

The segment of the population that needs strength training the most but gets the least is the over 65 crowd. There is a minimum of strength any person needs to live a full life, most people over 65 do not have that level of strength. I would bet that most people over 65 can not do a squat with no weight.
@johnrichards73605 жыл бұрын
Rex Bear I’m 66 and squatting 175 and will be over 200 by the end of the year! It is much harder at my age gaining strength, but it is still possible to get stronger at any age. I’m 6’1” and 173 lbs.

I am 56 years old and I can do incline bench 120 lbs 15 times and my heart doesn't race too much. When I do squats of 40 lbs for 8 reps , it makes my heart race. I walk around plenty at work and I noticed it is easier to go up the stairs after doing measly 40 lbs squats.
@inhibited446 жыл бұрын
I do mine at home. I have to dead lift whatever I squat. No luxury of having the weight at my shoulders. Most I did was in my mid 30's 120 lbs. I had trouble dead lifting over my head to get it into position to squat.

Thin doesn't always mean fit.
@onurbole79215 жыл бұрын
@@jamesscherck6155 He had a running background and probably good aerobic capacity for his age, that's "fit." Many people over 70 can't even do bodyweight squats or at least run out of breath after a few reps, he is much fitter than that. And look at people over 80, most of them are thin. Fitness is a spectrum, thin people are usually ahead of overweight people on that spectrum, longevity shows that. And this man is not scrawny or anything. He was also quick to receive information, quick to execute, he had agile gestures for his age. That looks fit to me.
