You should be happy we had and have wars. Think about the possibilities if we didn’t have a war. All of the sudden a country gets mad and we decide to test out an atomic bomb having no idea what it would do. The bombs we dropped on Japan were a sign to the world of what destruction a modern one would do. Just looked it up, and they used air conditioning 😂😂 as funny as that sounds, it used the fuel to cool the cockpit, which is a super common method of gas turbine cooling, usually for the oil. We call it FCOC as an acronym which the child in me thinks is great. They couldn’t use compressor discharge air, because it works good for cooling super heated metal, but it’s literally hotter than the surrounding hot air, at 400 Celsius. Which probably isn’t too good for people 😂 Oil barely serves as a lubricant in these engines, as it’s mainly a coolant.

I read about a case at the dawn of supersonic aviation, when subsonic aircraft were re-equipped, and then test supersonic high-altitude flights were carried out. And once the fastening of the cockpit cap failed. The pilot was under the action of an oncoming air flow at a speed of several Mach. The arms were instantly torn off, and the steel wire reinforcement of the suit looked like it had been rubbed on the asphalt for many hours. The eyes were boiled, the skin from the skull (also boiled) completely slid back.

I watched a video about how and why planes heat up so much during super sonic travel. There's alot to it, but basically when you're going trans-sonic (coming close to the speed of sound) the force of the air and the force of the engines are matched and all the heat being used to keep you at that speed has no time to disapate. So at the shock wave point all the heat being pushed out by the engines is kinda funneled into it. So as the shock wave moves over the plane it heats up. Sorry, I probably didn't do a great job explaining that, but the video does.

Somebody in their various services will always find a way to use parts of their equipment to make their lives a little easier, better, and more importantly comfortable. Sometimes, this innovation is taken up by the brass, mostly it's frowned upon, but if it works for little effort, it spreads throughout.

Fun fact: The SR-71 leaked fuel until the skin stretched at high temperature to perfect alignment.
@diychad7268
@diychad7268 Жыл бұрын
The "skin" didn't "stretch"......... The metal body would expand under the heat of the said 600 degree air flowing over it due to friction, causing the gaps in the panels joints to the. Meet up with each other and seal up, also we ain't talking huge gaps, there wouldn't be much fuel leaking when it was but it was noticeable, the gaps starting out were only a few thousandths from being sealed but that amount did allow for some fuel to slightly leak out

If it weren't for the gazillions of other cameras everywhere else on that thing, it would be almost impossible to fly it. But that is what it was built for : it was a giant camera so that Congress could see exactly what the fuck is going on with our enemies. It did have a few defenses, but had to slow down to use them so they never did use any. It just went so freakishly fast that a nuke delivery system was developed for it but was scrapped when the ICBM could do it faster and without risking any rare pilots for this expensive monster.
