@astrinymris9953

"Still breathing" leapt out to me, too. I haven't researched 911 calls, but don't most people lead with what's wrong? It seems to me that if she was breathing when he called, wouldn't he lead with, "My wife's unconscious and there's blood everywhere!" or "She's *barely* breathing"? The latter would be more plausible because that carries the implication that her breathing is weak or labored, and thus an area of valid concern. But his making a point of the fact that she's "still" breathing makes me think that she wasn't breathing when Peterson made the call. Mind you, I'm not necessarily convinced that he attacked her. Michael Peterson is an author, and creating narratives is second nature to him. I think they had a fight, Michael stormed out, spent a long time sulking, and then returned to the house when he'd judged that she'd already gone to bed. Then he found her dead in a pool of blood at the foot of the staircase. He's bright enough to realize he'd be a suspect, but beyond that it's incompatible with his self-image to have been pouting by the pool as she died. So he had to come up with a story that made him blameless. It was an accident, nobody's fault! I wasn't chilling by the pool for an hour while she died, she was still breathing when I found her! Yes, I suppose it is possible that he attacked her and caused her death... but there's no evidence that he was an abusive partner before that, or even a guy prone to explosive outbreaks. But passive-aggressively ducking a confrontation he didn't want to have? That strikes me as more on brand for him.

A 911 operator commented on a different video that he was guilty based on his use of the word "still". According to the 911 operator, innocent people will say "she's breathing" or "she's not breathing".

Thanks Peter for explaining that bizarre Peterson’s 911 call. I’ve never believed his BS. I watched the Sundance channel’s original 2004 “Staircase” documentary by the French director Lestrade. It’s GREAT if you ever need to watch & listen to Peterson et. al. “in the raw” (he’s a rotten actor). Anyway the 911 call is the first thing viewers hear and I immediately said out loud: “Well that’s a wrap - he killed his wife”. I watched & DVR’d all of the episodes as I’m fascinated by criminal trials like this one. I don’t have your professional expertise but MP’s the worst fake-innocent-husband I’ve ever heard or seen. I’m here for it if you ever do a deep dive into MP’s language in the documentary - I’m shocked anyone ever believed him.

The man was a story teller,' Kathleen had an accident'. He didn't ask for an ambulance ,his breathing was all wrong. He killed her. My husband flat lined in our kitchen in 2015 our landline phone was in the living room. I phoned 999 and told the operator I needed an ambulance and was going to my husband to do chest compression's. Thankfully my husband recovered with the compression's by the time the ambulance arrived and was able to get a pacemaker. Thank God he is still with me.

Peter, I’m a court reporter by profession, though I’m now retired and have time to learn about and observe human behavior. 😊 As you can imagine, I find your work FASCINATING!!! While I understand you may not be so interested in THIS Peterson (because there’s Drew and Scott), if you watch MP in -I believe its the first episode of ‘The Staircase,’ he leads everyone through his version of the events of that evening. There are so many more red flags in that (I believe) contrived summary of events that I didn’t even need to waste my time watching the documentary. (My neighbor asked me to watch it; otherwise, I’d not have bothered. She wanted to hear my take on the case.) I heard the 911 call, then his summary of the events and I was pretty much done. His word choice, physical demonstrations, actions, behavior, body language and facial expressions in those two statements were enough for me. I’m thoroughly enjoying your content, so I just wanted to say hi and thanks. ❤❤❤ …aaand… if you’re so inclined, check out that short amount of video where he leads everyone down the garden path, it has many teachable moments…again, IMO 😉

You’re fantastic. Thank you for this 🙌 Have you seen the recent confessional style video his son Todd Peterson made? It was very jarring to watch. I could be off in parts here but from what I gathered… Todd ( Michaels biological son ) has done a complete 180 and said he believes his father killed Kathleen and Elizabeth. Todd also explained how his biological mother Patty, died of a heart attack ( last year? ) ….a heart attack that came on while she was in the company of Michael Peterson. Todd said that Michael had been with Patty, for 3 hours but Mike didn’t call emergency services for Patty….. and when Todd arrived Todd called 911 within minutes because his mother Patty was clearly ill and need of medical assistance. Now Todds alleging that Mike killed Patty; through inaction - by not providing her with vital medical attention and waiting / allowing her, to slowly die.

I am not familiar with the case, but would like to address something you touched on. You referred to a documentary about the case which used music to influence emotional response from the potential viewers. I think this is a very common aspect of contemporary documentaries. And I agree it is very manipulative. I find it has almost become a cue for eliciting an emotional response. It implies that agendas are involved.

Lastly watch the 2022 series starring Colin Firth as Peterson (he’s SO good it gave me the creeps like MP did). The haunting soundtrack didn’t need to garner sympathy from viewers because MP had already been convicted of murder.

Peterson gives me the creeps, and that first thing he says in the 911 call adds on to the creep vibes. My first immediate reaction is - He was waiting for her to die. = She is STILL breathing. What i "see" as having happened was him looming over her waiting for her to stop breathing, and as she didn't and a considerable amount of time passed he was annoyed that she was still breathing and started thinking, what if she does NOT stop breathing? I can't strangle her or hit her with something! He HAD to call 911 as she would not stop breathing, leaving her there for too long would seem suspicious at a later date whether she lived or died. Don't know if what i'm saying makes any sense, i'm trying to imagine how a murderous mindset would reason. Great analysis as always , Peter.

Thank you Peter for another great analysis. I’m fascinated by how little things can give people away. I first saw you when you did the McCann analyses. I pinned Michael Petersen as guilty the moment I heard the 911 call. The gasping seemed fake. Saying she’d had an accident… How did he know? Saying she was still breathing and then on the next call saying she wasn’t, felt to me like he was trying to demonstrate a time of death being now rather than past. I feel if you were going to mention breathing, you wouldn’t need to even say “still”. You’d just say “they’re breathing!” If this was me and I’d genuinely discovered a loved one covered in blood at the bottom of the stairs I think I’d be more likely to say “hello, I’ve just found XXXX at the bottom of the stairs covered in blood…. They’re unconscious” Then I’d pause for breath and gather my composure so I could listen for questions. I don’t think the breathing would even come into it at that stage, you wouldn’t waste time, you’d call 911 for help and then try and work out if they are alive. I am not American, I’m English, but I found his attitude a bit condescending, like giving orders and then acting a bit stupid. The number of stairs question got him. He wasn’t expecting it. His call was all about setting his narrative, to make people believe his version of events: It was an accident, she’s alive. How can he possibly be guilty, he’s there. He wouldn’t be calling 911 if he was guilty (or so we are supposed to think!). More red flags than China.

This doesn’t equate to me pushing them down the damn stairs.

Could it be true that someone who (guilty caller) tries to beg the operator with “please please” in an attempt to manipulate the situation so that it seems like there could be some fault on the part of the emergency crew (if she looses her life) that it’s an attempt to spread the guilt also if they don’t get there soon enough ? That’s a stretch. Plus, the use of the word “please” is seriously meaningless. It’s more likely to be a sign of begging for help than anything else. Say you’re in total agony at the hospital and you’re saying “Please make it stop! Please!!”. Would you consider that to be a normal way to communicate when you’re in that much pain or would you automatically assume the person is lying and then just want pain meds?

He gave it away in first few minutes into the show. Walking out of the house explaining that night. Said I went out here. Talking about going in the deck. Kathleen walking to the house he says it was the last time I saw her alive. Well wait!!! The last time I saw Kathleen alive was when she fell, but she was barely alive. He’s guilty and if you watch the show on Netflix, listen to his words. He slips up all thru the show. Remember that he’s a writer. He uses colorful words thru out. Like he’s telling a story. Same when they first spoke to Todd in the documentary. You can tell it’s a rehearsed story. Todd knew more than he was saying. Months after the show ended, Todd admitted he killed both women including his former wife. After knowing what I know now, and going back to watching the documentary again I can see everything stick out and so many red flags. He got away with murder three times in my opinion from watching and seeing what I saw.

I hope you’ll make time to watch the tv coverage on this case. There are several crime shows that have featured this case in the past. Forensic Files is one. But the Netflix series and the new series in HBO are an excellent opportunity for you as an export to get another vantage point of how an audience can be persuaded through bias and propaganda. I know we all understand these concepts, but to see a particular case, with all the evidence, or lack thereof, masterfully presented to introduce doubt in the audience is extremely interesting on a psychological level. I wish you could do an in depth series on this case, and offer your insight if you were willing to do so, on how the facts of the case along with embellishment and omission could make for such riveting drama. Even though it is drama for entertainment sake, it’s still very much a study on how we perceive truth, how our perceptions can be faulty or swayed from our instincts, and ultimately how the justice system can fail or how it can prevail in even circumstantial murder cases. I always look forward to your videos by the way!

Kathleen was planned to be away on business the next morning but during the evening dinner she received a call from a colleague/friend. That friend told Kathleen that her husband was having a gay affair. A mature woman planning a busy Buisness trip wouldn’t usually be going to bed at 2am? The fact he felt compelled to include the word "accident' is very sus to me. No need to state the obvious especially when panicked. Besides the 'HOW' is irrelevant to this phone call (needing an ambulance). The only 'accident' most would report as an initial 'accident' would be traffic accidents because those two words are often synonymous. Even if your baby was found in a pool.....you still wouldn't tell the 911 operator it was an accident because whether they were pushed, submerged or fell in....that detail makes no difference when asking for help. Maybe as you're explaining things you'd mention 'accident' but not initially as Michael did!! Side note: I just binged watched Netflix: Love on the Spectrum (US) and I was so taken by this 63 yr old guy named Steve Spitz (whose father was also a writer/publisher like Michael) He reminded me SO much of Mike Peterson!! Voice, personality, mannerisms micro-expressions etc. Makes me wonder if Michael Peterson may have some sort of a physiological/mental disorder too 2-second snippet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bme3o4iGqN-Wb7s

For sure. Pick one or two or three disorders - he’s totally a Narcissistic Manipulator with some kind of split or dissociative personality disorder; pathological liar, serial killer, etc. He wasn’t even smart enough to evade murder conviction and incarceration. HUA syndrome. (Head-up-ass)

Is "please" short for "so help me god please" The "please" added onto to his sentences is confusing. I'm used to hearing "please" preceding or following a request. To write a sentence with a period is to imply the stopping of a thought, or a place where there is a rest. So " . Please!" Isolated is passing strange Is it possible he heard the word please repeated prior to the call. Would he attempt to use her language when speaking to an individual/institution with more power than him? Sort of ... Reflecting the power dynamics of the prior event? Please!

He’s also trying to justify why he is not doing CPR while he actually knows she is dead. He is saying STILL, knowing that time is moving forward to a point where she will be seen to be dead by others and he will be the one that TRIED to get help. I think this guy spent a good deal of time writing the script for the narrative of her death long before he had dinner and 2 bottles of wine and set the scene for the ‘accident ‘.

How can parents who were responsible for an accidental death of their child (neglect - and then the hiding of the body), carry on a false narrative for many years...such as saying that the child was taken? Why don't they eventually "crack "?

I think that you can fall from the top of the stairs, break your neck and die, but to have seven wounds in the skull is different. As for the call, it seems he never wanted for them to come in time, because she was already dead for some time prior to the calls.

I've always wondered why Michael saw Kathleen in that very bloody scene, severe blood spatter on the walls and stairs, why would he or anyone assume it was an accident. Maybe an intruder had snuck into the home to burgle it. Maybe Kathleen encountered this intruder who panicked and killed her. Wouldn't that make more sense, especially considering the amount of blood? We probably all have seen someone or experienced ourselves a fall down a stairs. Even if not, surely a person accidentally falling down the stairs wouldn't start bleeding all over the place with spray patterns on the walls (not to mention SEVEN serious scalp lacerations to back of the head)). At the point Micheal doesn't even know if the intruder is still in the house! Why does he go straight to 'accident? Why so conclusive at this point. He doesn't even qualify his observation with a "I think" she fell down the stairs. Nope, he knows she fell down the stairs. That's suspicious.

She wasn't breathing. He told the operator she was STILL breathing because a murderer wouldn't call 911 if his victim was still alive. When the operator asked if she was conscious he says "what?". Whether she was conscious or not was not part of his story. Then, at one point, he told the operator that she had "stopped" breathing
@friedmule5403

12:21 By keeping on telling she is "still breathing", is he also not putting too much emphasis on a detail that is unnecessary? Would it not be more normal to say "she lays strangely", "I think she may have broken something" or maybe even "what can I do, she is very hurt"? Why this need to tell that she is still alive, should that not be a given, unless he had said "I think she is dead"?
