One of the bad things I feel which the jumping around (I've only seen the first episode) is that a lot of impact of the deaths don't hit. Like with Fran's dad, in the book you get to know him and how close he is to his daughter so when he gets sick and she has to take care of him it hits hard, and his death burial is heart breaking. In the episode it just happens.

@@victoriaswift3633 You don't truly feel the epic horror of it and that crushing despair of watching the world slowly die. There is a section early on the novel were about the cop who picks up the virus from the guy who owned the gas station that the first guy crashes into, and shows how he passes it on to other people (King being him gives you enough detail about the other people so they are not just random faceless people) and than tells you about the people they pass the virus. He builds up to the massive down fall of the world, with the small tragic deaths of people and their loved ones making it all the more powerful and gut wrenching when you are dealing with the dead bodies rotting in houses and on the curbs as the world burns and madness takes over. Agreed that Stephen King has a real problem with portraying Black people. IMO he also has a problem with female characters--not only in this book, but in some of his other writings as well. There's one novella he wrote in his 2010 Full Dark No Stars collection--the novella is titled Big Driver--where he stereotypes THE FUCK out of both lesbians and single unmarried women. For a self-purported "liberal" guy, he sure has some illiberal views on women in general. A lot of his female characters who aren't happily married homemaker types are portrayed as societal weirdos, which really rubs me the wrong way. He was even writing these characters in the 2010 collection! I mean, WTF? Most married moms these days AREN'T homemakers because families simply can't afford being single-income households. King really needs to read the times--and the room.

Exactally. And sadly, everytime the put a new version of The Stand out there, it ruins the story more and more. It was the best book I ever read. The 94 series was just ok in my eyes, somewhat enjoyable if you read the book before watching it and just wanted to see the story in TV form. However , if the Stand 94 miniseries is the only version of the story you know, it is awful and no comparison to the actual story. These guys say how great an adaption it is and I truly hope they are being sarcastic because if you've only ever seen the show and not read the book, you are doing yourself a terrible disservice and missing out on one of the greatest stories ever written IMO. As far is the new series is concerned, I'd really hate to comment on it without have seen the entire thing. But I can and will say a few quick things. From what I've seen so far, it is horrible miscast, and I MEAN HORRIBLY! Secondly, the jumping back and forth in time is confusing for me being someone who has read the book a ton and knows it inside out. I can't imagine how hard it is for someone who is watching it for the first time to follow. Dunno who's idea it was to do that but it was a bad one. I'll save the rest for after I see it all

@@luvmenow33unfortunately the jumping back and forth wasn't even the biggest problem with this adaptation. I know the '94 movie version is dated and that they didn't have great CGI but as far as storytelling, writing, etc. The movie version is still shaping up to be the best version of the book. The series' way of telling the story thru flashbacks is off-putting and in no way are you feeling concern, anxiety, etc. Another thing that is way better with the movie in comparison to the series is the complexity of each character and the misapprehensions of who is evil and who isn't. I really wanted to like the new series (because I am a big fan of the book and the '94 movies and Alexander Skarsgaard) but so far I am completely disillusioned!

One of the most interesting things about the dark man's cult in the book is how normal and sometimes even pleasant their day to day lives usually were. It was a layer of complexity that this series just didn't have.

This book is one of his best - but - it can't translate - it is always horrible. ** Also, key factor - King writes terrifying books - but he is actually pretty corny and I say that with respect - I follow his Dog - Annie aka The Thing of Evil on Twitter - I don't think he sees his work the same way the majority of us do. Whenever he gets involved we get brightness and TV actors like the dude who played John Boy in The TV The Shining - he hated Kubrick's The Shining - so he got John Boy (OMG) and then he did it again - with the Wings actor... his vision just doesn't translate. I like horror writers but I am a Clive Barker girl. I respect and like to read some of his books .... but I don't like most of the films and TV he puts his hands on.

Here they mentioned the black militant dudes in loincloths executing white people on TV in The Stand. That seems like a very scary thing for those kind of white people I guess... Its that whole helter skelter Manson family scenario. But aside from that King has a habit of making his black characters kind of boring or stereotypical but with a weird curiosity about them. They always have some kind of magical power that needs to be cultivated in some way. It's kind of a white guilt narrative, but low key, perpetuates a bit of condescension by doing that.

If Martin only read this book in high school, he probably only read the original abridged version published in ‘78 (about 800 pages) which did not have the Bernie Wrightson illustrations or scenes such as Campion fleeing the base or the infamous black junta scene which are very much present in the 1150+ page uncut version that was published in 1990. Also the 1994 miniseries opened with a crow perching itself nearby the base when Captain Trips breaks out indicating Flagg may have triggered the virus to contaminate the base. P.S. As someone who only saw the first episode, it is weird seeing the Stu/Frannie coupling (22 year age gap) compared to the 1994 miniseries coupling of Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald (13 year age gap) as they looked closer in age.

I actually thought it was clever to have Flagg hold the door open to let Campion out and the virus into the world. In the original series they make it look like Campion makes it out by chance (busting through the gates with his car) and like you said in the book it was a malfunction. However I'm big on the sequential narrative. The way it jumps around does nothing and makes it more confusing. A properly sequenced version of this would be much better and let the characters grow and give you a slower burn to the events that unfold.

I will say your wrong about one thing guys… in the books it’s eluded to that Randall Flag (the walking man) had something to do with captain tripps. King mentioned in an early chapter that Flaggs name was on one of the doors at the disease center.

Yeah when people saw Amber's character, or heard that she's in the show, people were like; "Oh hell no, not this abusive bitch! Get her the hell off this show!" And honestly I don't blame them one bit; she got exposed for lying, and now known as an abusive monster. Yet people at Hollywood, around the time, still see her as a "innocent victim" and gave her so much attention and gigs!

I wanted to wait until I read "The Stand" before I watched this. I finished the book this morning and watched the first five episodes of the 2020 miniseries and my biggest complaint is that really none of the characters are developed well. The only reason things made sense to me is because I spent this month reading the book. The casting, acting, and updated time was great, but there is just something missing. I didn't believe any of these relationships...even Tom and Nick (which are my favorite characters in the book). They just cut way too many corners and if I hadn't read the book, I don't think I would have gotten past the second episode because I am able to fill in the blanks with the source material. I think Nadine and Trashcan Man were the best examples you gave of WTF!?! There is really no character development for her. She has zero chemistry with Larry and her coming onto him (in the miniseries) comes out of nowhere. 1) You spend almost no time with them on the road and what you see doesn't earn what their relationship is supposed to be. Also, she is conflicted in the book, but in the show just seems evil and into being bad. Which leads to 2) why does she suddenly change her mind and throw herself at Larry? I can't with Trashcan Man's character. The miniseries did him dirty. Just lots of problems, but I am curious how it wraps up and am kind of hate watching it at this point. Loved the review as always.
@leob440310 ай бұрын
And Lucy Swann (Larrys girlfriend) was not even in this whatsoever, they completely removed her, so the Nadine/Larry relationship and arch makes no sense whatsoever anymore! These guys had no idea what they were doing, it's a tragedy

After just watching the first episode I can say... it sucks. Why? * The out of order storytelling. This episode jumps from the future, to the past, to the present, without warning. * Characters with weird or undefined motivations. For example: Harold starts out as an awkward peeping Tom with a crush on his former babysitter, and ends up going to "I'll kill everyone" mode quickly. * Over inflated, padded scenes that serve no reason other than to stretch out the run time. Example: The scene with General Starky and Redman. It was completely unnecessary to have that conversation they had. It didn't progress the story at all and slowed the whole pace down. And actually ended up with a poetry reading...in the middle of a disaster. And this was all in the first episode. After CBS failed with Star Trek Discovery, Lower Decks, Picard, Twilight Zone, and now The Stand, I have canceled my CBS subscription.
@stephennootens9163 жыл бұрын
The Starky scene happens in the book without Stu and in fact if I remember right he has his own little subplot were fails to control Captain Trips and goes sort of crazy like Coronal Kartz. The poem he recites in both and opens the original miniseries. The motives and so forth you make more sense of they had a straight forward retelling so you could see the darkness and anger that builds in Harold.
@starbrand37263 жыл бұрын
@@stephennootens916 I did not read the book, and based solely on the first episode, I just can't see Harold's motivation to such darkness. It looks like he goes from awkward nice guy to serial killer over night.

@@stephennootens916 Starkey never even meets Stu in the book. All the military are out to kill him and cover up the spreading of the virus. But since this adaptation is a propaganda piece the military are now the good guys instead!

@@leob4403 I have to admit although it has been awhile since I read the book, but I remember the military picking Stu up at his home and try to cover up the whole virus until it has spread too much to hide it. @@stephennootens916 yeah and there's this guy called Elder that tries to kill Stu, but he manages to kill him instead. Anyway, we have to cut out anything that would make our beloved government or medias or military or doctors or scientists or whatever look bad, we can not have our children seeing anything else but pure propaganda after all, screw all kinds of critical thinking of our authorities that King tried to inspire in his works, that is dangerous for our puny little minds, that's what our beloved big brother tells us
