Ok so up top if you've been following the channel for a while now then you'll know that I don't intentionally rip into things for the sake of doing it. I'm not a get woke go broke anti-sjw type youtuber who just talks about things in a negative light to cause drama and get clicks, however, what Ezra Miller and CBS have done with the stand in general this episode is so bad that it's bordering on offensive and I have no idea why they thought this was a good idea.
Now I'm not in the best of moods with CBS as it stands...pun not intended. Since starting my breakdowns they've put claims on a number of them and have blocked them from being monetised. I do this as a full time job and rely on revenue from videos so them carrying this out on something, especially when I wasn't even ripping into the show is super frustrating. Kinda makes doing the videos a waste of time as I could be working on something that's not gonna get flagged and will get me money instead but I know you guys are enjoying the videos so I perservere.
I've been trying to give these guys the benefit of the doubt but clearly it's not happening from their side so screw em.
After watching the opening of this episode I've just had the little goodwill I had over the show killed completely. Now in the source material, the trashcan man is a man who is a pyromaniac. He's fascinated by setting trashcans alight, hence the name. Now the character suffers from mental illness
Though he suffers from mental illness I think even if you watch the original mini series then you'll know that he comes across as crazy more than someone who's disabled. Now I dunno if I'm putting my own impressions and life experience before what the show is trying to portray here but I did have a disabled relative who passed away last year and the portrayal that Ezra gives seems like he's trying to ape that but he isn't doing anyone any favours. In 2021 I just think this is such a bad idea that I have no idea why anyone allowed it to happen and when he's strutting slowly through the tankers with his jaw sticking out, bent wrists, making velociraptor sounds and then jacking off to fire it just paints out people with disabilities in a bad light. It's almost a caricature of someone suffering from something that they can't control and it doesn't paint out people with disabilities in a sympathetic or understandable light. I'd heard for a while from people that had been given early access that Ezra went to far with his performance and to go from him to then Tom Cullen being bossed around and tread on, it just seems in such bad taste. They did a lot with making Tom Cullen seem like more than his disability but unfortunately this took 90 steps back to the 1970s and pretty much derailed the entire season.
Sorry I just had to get that off my chest now as always this is the heavy spoilers show, I'm your host Paul...welcome I guess....now let's get into the breakdown.

Hard agree with your stance, it wasn't a cool representation. That being said, I'm okay with people making mistakes as long as they acknowledge it and apologize. If they do that it won't be the reason I quit watching, if they don't it will. (That being said, as a fan of the source material that's pretty forgiving of film this show it has been a chore of a show in general)

One thing is for sure , Even though its been branded "Based on the book by Stephen King " it should be branded " A Re-imagining of The Stand by Stephen King " . To think that one of my top ten books of all time has been reduced to this is sad . This show isn't just a Flatliner its DOA . I'll continue to watch it till the end , but I have little hope for any sort of redemption at this point .

I agree completely. I stopped after episode 2 when it became impossible to watch with my 14 year old granddaughter due to the non-stop obscenities. Plus I read the interview with King’s son, the writer, about it not being about a pandemic (??!), Flagg and Trump, etc. It’s a disaster.

@William McHugh And that would have worked fine if they had used the extra time to tell compelling stories about the characters. But they focused on them like some 'character study', and gave us a montage of scenes rather than sending us on a journey with the characters. In the original, I remember being so excited to see Mother Abigail for the first time, and so relieved to see Boulder the first time. None of those emotions are present in the new show. I didn't even care about Mother Abigail in this one because we hardly saw any dreams! The dreams were handled so badly.

Even after reading the 2 versions of the stand, the second version 1200 pages more not enough different then the first read. Picard was a great time but as the virus just keeps getting bigger and mutating around the world especially USA. I think maybe like Twitter maybe getting offline and maybe read more and yes I know I am confusing do I, should I and could I read anything longer then 345 pages? Why would I give CBS my small ass change if they are going after creators taking their money? Think CBS executives should piss off .

I thought they did a good job with the judge......In the last two episodes, Flagg has mentioned that he knows Judge Farris is coming but wants her taken alive (Different from the book).....Last night Lloyd explained to Flagg that the people he had working for him had the intelligence of a turnip. We also see the Judge hear something outside and grabs a gun. It's pretty obvious that Bobby Terry (because he doesn't have the smarts to do anything else) just starts blasting away. In the book the Judge was sort of the elder statesman of the FZ. I would have like to see that explored more.

I agree that Trashcan man should have been developed more than this. They weren't able to develop him because they wasted to much time with the nonlinear version of this series in the first few episodes. They didn't develop other characters enough, such as Nick Andros. When Nick dies you can't feel as much as you should for him. The only character you get to know so far in this series is Harold Lauder. I'm not thrilled with this version of the Stand, and that's putting it mildly.

People getting their pitchforks ready when someone portrays some mentally DISABLED, but loved it when the character was portrayed as mentally UNSTABLE is hilarious to me, and a true instance of a very specific type of hypocrisy. I myself have schizophrenia, and I find it truly funny when people believe it's ok to portray mentally unstable, or even say words like crazy, or insane when referring to people like me, but get REALLY mad/hurt when someone acts like someone mentally disabled. DONT GET ME WRONG PLEASE!!! I really don't care about the word "crazy", nor do I care about an actor playing one, (and although only a very VERY small percentage of us are serial killers, or masterminds who HUNT serial killers that's pretty much the only thing a character with schizophrenia gets to do or be) I am merely pointing out an often unseen hypocrisy. I am no snowflake so please don't take my comment the wrong way. Personally I thought Ezra's performance was really good. Even though it wasn't really like the Trashcan Man from the book. I'm of the same opinion as the South Park guys: "It's either ALL funny, or NONE of it is funny". Meaning either everything is up for interpretation, and nothing is shielded, or NOTHING can be interpreted in ANY way. It's a tv show, and he acted his ass off in the part. He wasn't making fun of disabled people. He was merely acting an interpretation of a SINGLE disabled person. From fiction. I believe if we take down the shrowd of overused PC-ness, and look at something objectively then and only then can we appreciate it for what it is. This is not a performance people need to get offended over. The Simple Jack reference doesn't really work because in that movie he created that character for the sole purpose of fame, and did it in a really cheesey 2 dimensional way. Ezra's Trashcan Man might make you feel disturbed, but it's supposed to. If you are offended because you are disturbed by the character then you have missed the point. S King creates characters that are extremely true to life, and that's why he's a good writer. Ezra played a character that could've been plucked out of a real apocalypse, and that character disturbs us. It is supposed to. Again, my only reason for writing this was to not only point out an often unknown hypocrisy in society, but to also point out that this portrayal wasn't what people think it was, and are getting offended by. I hope my explanation will help someone to rewatch, and see the character in a new light. I also hope that people will see the schizophrenic serial killer trope for what it is, an unrealistic trope/stereotype.
@cbandtheradio5610
@cbandtheradio5610 3 жыл бұрын
@Bitch Face Exactly. There's all kinds of hypocrisy EVERYWHERE. And I'm no snowflake, easily butt-hurt kind of person. But when a new show/movie/book comes out where the serial killer is a schizophrenic, and everyone praises it like it's something new and incredible, and not the cookie-cutter stereotype it is I just tend to internally roll my eyes. People get REALLY upset when people do black face, say "that's retarded", or perpetrate any number of stereotypes when there's no malicious intent involved, and I mean countless Facebook campaigns, and Cancel Culture. But the mentally unstable stereotype, and the words 'crazy', or 'insane' don't even blip anyone's radar. Like I said I'm no snowflake so I really don't care when people do it (internal eye rolling). I just find the hypocrisy/double standard hilarious. I can't take anyone seriously when they complain about something like Ezra's performance because it was spot on, and they felt disturbed, but they fucking LOVE the new season of Prodigal Son, and call people whose opinions they don't agree with 'crazy', or 'insane'. Fuckin hilarious haha!

I see the Trashcan Man as being primarily a broken human. Any disability he has is overshadowed by the traumas he has experienced. I don't even know how much of what looks like disability is actually brain-damage from the violence he experienced, and deformity from burn scarring.
@cbandtheradio5610
@cbandtheradio5610 3 жыл бұрын
@wanderingseth , truly. I can see people upset that Ezra's performance/character isn't an accurate representation of the character from to the novel (even though in my own personal opinion his portrayal IS pretty great haha). But, people shouldn't be offended by the portrayal of a disability, or ANY disability really. Because it's not only just a portrayal, but it's a portrayal meant to SHOW a disability, and not to make FUN of a disability. It isn't born out of malicious intent. Besides, what are we truly saying when we decide one or another disability isn't allowed to be portrayed. That those people don't exist? That they are so disturbing that they hit somewhere deep inside us, so they shouldn't be acknowledged? It's pretty funny what people get offended by, and for what reasons. I believe if people who are needlessly offended look deep into why they are offended they'll realize some important truths about themselves. If someone is making fun of someone with a disability, something with malicious intent then people not only have the right to be offended, but they SHOULD be offended. Pretty much any other reason is self-serving. Some people just WANT to be offended, or they WANT to fight because they are in a bad mood, or they "doth protest too much" because somewhere deep down (whether subconscious or not) they are honestly disturbed not just by the portrayal, but the truth behind the portrayal. Being 'PC' isn't a bad thing. It's only when people hide behind PC for self serving reasons that they are hypocrites. Whether they know it or not. People need to stop and think about why they are offended before they REACT to the offense.

They did a FAR better job with the Trashcan Man in the original mini-series. You understand exactly what his internal "demons" were, and that he was a tragic victim of bullying and trauma, not that he was mentally handicapped or whatever. His depiction here in this version is RIDICULOUSLY shameful, I have to agree. 👍 Even Tom Cullen, (M-O-O-N, that spells Tom Cullen!) It may have been that right about the same time he got the contract with Warner bros to play Flash that his girlfriend of four years, whom he said he had planned to marry, suddenly marries someone else. He seemed to go downhill fast from there.

With you on this one. No idea why they sh*t the bed so badly with the trashcan man. In the book, he's got issues, sure. But King is very careful to show how these are a direct result of faliures by his family and the care system - which makes him vunerable to charismatic psychos like Flagg. Showing him without this context is akin to the old "freak" shows. All spectacle, no substance and utterly offensive.

For what it's worth, I completely agree with you regarding Miller's portrayal of TCM. Their voice, mannerisms and physical posture indeed appear to be riffing on offensive and outdated stereotypes of disability. I appreciate that part of the problem lies with the original King material but then at least he had pages and pages to contextualise the character rather than the cold open of TCM appearing onscreen with no explanation. I am not arguing that one is better than the other but you would think that in the decades since the novel's publication, the industry might have learnt something about how to portray disability in a more compassionate and nuanced way. Incidentally, the song playing in the background is by the late Daniel Johnston - a pointed choice given his struggles with mental health and bipolar disorder - which only seems to compact the unsubtle, clumsy approach that this show takes at every turn.

The fact that they had to include the masturbation is just so unnecessary and disrespectful. I know king is infamous for his awkward sexual writing but none of this was necessary. Trash’s fascination with fire was more akin to a bizarre cultist religion. He doesn’t do it for sexual gratification, he does it because he is obsessed with fire. It’s the entire reason why he is obsessed with flagg. Flagg can realistically set the world on fire, and trash would obviously be in favor of a man who wants to watch the world burn (both metaphorically and literally).

The cast here is amazing, but it seems like they are undermined by some stereotypes that the writers have inflicted on the series. You point it out well with making Trashcan Man far more mentally disabled than he was in the book. But also Harold speaks in evil villain cliches, Nadine seems too obviously evil rather than intricately conflicted, and Stu seems like just an image of a good guy. It is like they are doing the shortest route to signal to us what to think. Unfortunately THE STAND as a book works because we see the good and evil in most of the characters rather than these simplistic sketches CBS has kicked out. Proud of you for carrying on despite the flags... but in the end it is ironic that a FLAG is trying to stop you! How very much THE STAND! CBS must have corporate headquarters in Vegas.

Personally, I just don't understand why ANY network would air a series with this type of content and storyline in a pandemic where so many have died! In the opening episodes we learn that 7 billion people have died due to a virus created by the US government, and to hide the fact it was them, they spread it to other countries via a vaccine, thus spreading the deaths of billions!! This is totally incompetent, and only spreads the fear of people getting vaccinated, which is the best way to curtail and end this most recent worldwide horror! :'(

Some folks don't like whoopie goldberg's politics. Some dont like amber heard. Others. Just dont like ezra miller. as for me. I knew exactly what I was getting with this adaptation having read interviews with cavell and boone months ago. Is it perfect ? Nope. Is it what I wish they would have done? Nope. What's missed with the CBS version of the Stand is that the book and the mini-series took an effort to allow you to have some sympathy for almost every character, even the ones that go to the dark side. In this, Harold has no redeeming qualities. Sure he was bullied by everyone around him, but the first shot is him being a pervy peeping Tom. His character's motivation is that the world has beat him down and the CBS version of Harold shows him with a sense of entitlement. At least in the book, it shows everyone around him trying to give him a chance and even depicts him questioning taking the dark path. On their way to Boulder, Fran starts to warm up to him, until Stu shows up. You can sort of understand his hatred for Stu in the previous versions. In this version Fran is nothing but a shit to him, and Harold is down the dark path from the start. In the end he does make an attempt at redemption but if all you ever know of these characters this would seem out of left field. Just a glaring example of how this series fails to develop the characters and their arcs despite its ten episode run time. Trashcan Man's lack of development in the CBS series is similar, though he never was a fully developed character in the book. He did have an arc, though we see none of it here. In the book and in the ABC series we do get the sense that society has failed him. In the CBS series they once again they eschew character development and arc and just go for the gross out factor of a scarred and smelly shallow depiction of a mentally handicapped man. Shameful.

Of COURSE Trashy has a disability. He's fucking psychotic. "bumpitybumpbumpitybumbbumpitybump My life for youuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!" Are there not passages in the book where other characters like Lloyd talk about how he creeps them out, how they don't trust him? His psyche isn't soft like Tom Cullen's - it shattered and jagged. I love the portrayal. I love most of the villains here. Lloyd has just the right amount of hero-worship mixed in with his greasiness. Harold's conflicted nature is on point. I wish Flagg had a little more of a flippant humor , but he brings the intensity beneath the calm exterior nicely. It's the heroes that are undeveloped and sadly lacking in depth. It's hard to care one way or another what happens to them.

Paul, I love your work, make no bones about it. Unfortunately I think whats happening here is you're beginning to see what these major companies and people do to the "plebs" as soon as they don't completely endorse their ideas or products. I sincerely hope you carry on and don't STAND (sorry 🤣) back in this problem. As always please, keep up the great work!!

After they completely screwed up Under The Dome , I`m surprised Stephen King would let them touch his Masterpiece. I guess he needed the money to buy another mansion .

Yeah ezra’s performance seems super weird and not cool. Even more so, after this episode, I’m left thinking “okay where is this going?” It’s starting to lose me.

Ahh hell Paul I'm so sorry buddy, you have been phenomenally even and fair to this show, even though it's been a serious misstep, as far as them complaining and de-moneytising you that's just a piss take!, I don't know what to say about trashcan, from the beginning I was really just hoping for an updated version of the tv show back in the day, but they've f*#+-d it over at every turn, all the best buddy, keep up the excellent work 👍

when comparing this to the 1994 version, the only character that was portrayed better in the 2020 version was Harold.

Matt Frewer did an awesome job as Trashcan Man because we were able to see his adoration of Flagg is misplaced zealousness. But there is no personality in either character in this production let alone chemistry that shows the twisted relationship. And Nick's character seems to have been superfluous. There is nothing redemptive about him in this. I did like the forest encounter between Flagg and Mother A.

I completely disagree! It’s very refreshing that they didn’t go with the 2021 PC bullshit that everything has become. This illustrated evil well! It’s not nice, it’s not pleasant, it’s not fun! We try to paint this picture nowadays how either way you choose, you’ll be fine. Thank you for showing how disturbing and disgusting it really is. Not a huge Ezra fan, but I think all characters where done excellent.

I enjoyed Ezras performance too, obviously due too the years of 'Electro' therapy (in the book) he is gonna be erm very mentally challenged, I bet they have more flashbacks for the charcter also, which will be cool, oh and Tom Cullens great also 😁

Slightly disagree with your rant. Trashcan man is not disabled but definitely deranged. After years of abuse and electroshock therapy, I don't think his actions were too far off. It's his take on what the history of the character would've grown into. Deranged, pyro, burned up, facial and verbal tics, etc..maybe the loss of your loved one had a little to do with how you viewed it.. Totally understandable.

Also slightly offensive is how Ezra Miller and the writers think so little of the viewers that they need to portray the trashcan man in such a way that he has no nuance. He has to be so over the top as to be comical.

I was a direct service provider (DSP) at a home for intellectually disabled people, and although Ezra captured some of the behaviors that some individuals have, his portrayal was very one dimensional. The people I helped take care of were just that; people, they have their idiosyncrasies just like anybody else. They were some of the nicest most generous people I had ever encountered. They’re good days and bad days, but even at their worst it was never malicious.

After Robert Meyer Burnett's early criticisms of the first episode, I'm very hesitant about getting into this Mini-Series. I think I'll go watch the 1994 Mini-Series first instead.
