In an old interview, King explained that he'd written about half of it and didn't know where to take the story after the virus had wiped out humanity, but he had to keep going because he had invested so much time into it by then. That's why it shifts gears like that midway through it.

I’m just getting to the last 50 pages or so. I don’t think it lives up to the hype but was an ok read I guess. Keen to get onto something a little harder or scarier for halloween because it’s not quite hit the spot for me.

Haha yes! Chapter 38! I had a huge reaction to that chapter as well. I thought it was so cool how he threw those several quick randos in there. It affected me so much that I remembered which chapter it was throughout the rest of the book. Great writing! … “No great loss” …

This book was originally a 4 star for me as well but then over the last two months, since finishing, it has really stuck with me and I decided to upgrade it to a 5 star. Not sure if ill ever revisit it, but i will definitely be thinking about it and comparing other works to it.

So far The Stand is my favourite SK book and I've read about 5 books by him so far. I don't regret it despite how long it was....IT on the other hand, I can't say the same Edit: After watching this video I do agree though. The first half is SO MUCH better. The concept was more interesting and realistic which made it scarier. The second half was just decently good lol

i was really hoping you’d bring up the fact that lloyd fell in love with randall while they were together in that jail! (the exact quote being “lloyd turned and looked into that grinning face with something more than gratitude, he looked at flagg with something like love.”) i love lloyd and randall’s relationship and dynamic and how lloyd felt like he was so indebted to flagg that he had to do everything that he was told to, no matter how strongly it went against his morals. one of my favorite chapters was chapter 73 when lloyd finally snaps back against flagg for a second, but ultimately ends up going back to him because of his deep love and loyalty towards flagg paired with the praise and manipulation the flagg is putting into his head (“but you, lloyd. you’re my good and faithful servant, aren’t you?”). also the way that lloyd refers to his past with poke and the small shit he did as “the worst” but flagg referring to the smaller crimes he committed as “the best”. there’s a lot behind lloyd in my opinion, and he’s probably one of the best characters in this book and in stephen king’s roster in general.

I dont really get your issue with the use of offensive terms in this book. Like every character that used those terms were portrayed as bad people. Kings writing is unapologetically real when it comes to portraying people and human nature, there are ignorant crappy people that think like that. Also the fact that you have such an issue with supernatural elements in a stephen kind book is kind of confusing to me. I dont agree with your takes on the book, but mad respect for taking the time and effort to read this behemoth.

The first time I read The Stand was in high school. It was the single longest book I'd ever read, but I don't remember it taking that long. I read it again in my late 20s and blew through it in probably a week. It's a pretty easy read, even if it doesn't seem like it will be. It's a page turner that keeps you going in spite of yourself. I had a harder time getting through the Tommyknockers, which is also longish, but that's because it isn't nearly as good.

It's been ages since I've read The Stand, but I have been trying to read a book of his a month of the ones I had let slip through the cracks over the years. I watched another booktuber recently make the same criticism about his use of the "n" word...and the other ugly words thrown about as I was reading him and I came across perfect examples of that tendency of his. Here's the thing that I notice of his use of it....it's usually while he has you in the thoughts of the bad character. I'm sure there are examples where I'm wrong on this, but for the most part he seems to use it to make an ugly character uglier. Reading it with these criticisms of it bouncing in my head had me reading an alternate, more pc version and it just doesn't work. I'm sure the most charming real life evil people (some serial killers are described as charming) wouldn't have been so charming if you could hear their thoughts.

About the IT comment, I never saw it as an orgy. This is a delicate argument and even I’m uncomfortable with defending this idea but they were desperate to show a act of good. An act of love. An act to tie them together. Perhaps it was a lazy way of showing an act of love but that was King’s intent IMO. First, she is with each of the boys separately and around the corner with privacy in mind. Second, she wasn’t just having sex with them. Beverley was making love to each of the boys. Throughout the book It, the monster, alludes to this act. Slut shaming her. Beverly loved each of those boys. I doubt I’ll change any minds but it’s how I saw it. I don’t root for it to happen again in any other story by any other author. Maybe I don’t want you to change your mind...but then again...I guess I want you to see past your gut reaction and to not disregard all the other words surrounding this controversial scene.

I absolutely loved the first half of the book, the part that made me shiver the most was when Harold started his own journal after reading Frannie's. I knew I was going to witness Harold's ominous descent into darkness after that. However, I was so... disappointed with how anticlimactic the ending turned out to be. What was the point of sending the 4 dudes? It looks like Trashy was going to destroy everything regardless. I absolutely despised the sexualization of every single female character introduced in this book and how Fran was reduced to nothing but a crying fit compared to her bad-ass-ness, strength, and resilience in the first half of the book. Anyway, I'm still marinating my thoughts about the book, but it wasn't bad. I loved the first half, as I mentioned earlier, more than most books I've ever read, but the second half was just... bland.

I have DNF’d at the 50ish% mark twice. The beginning is great and then it takes a major nose dive.

Love a good king but I always feel like he adds too much description . That seems pointless. Love his short stories for the most part tho cause it just forces him to get to the point 😂 Always better.

I don't get how you gave this ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐? Seems like even people that dislike King's books still give him a good rating. This is a ⭐ ⭐ book at best.

King just love to insert Randall Flagg in his books, and in my opinion he's not even that good of a character 😭
