I loved "Star Ocean - The Divine Force" as the game reminded me so much of "Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future", a short lived Science Fiction series back in the late 1980s. For example, the game's antagonist organization, Scorpium, sounds vaguely similar to the Bio Dread Empire as they have a mandate to have a machine dominated galaxy, machines that behave like autonomous living organisms like Star Ships and artificial cities, the use of digitization to transform organic lifeforms into machines (doesn't that remind you of Soaron and Blastarr), and an arch villain behaving like Lord Dread. Only difference is that Scorpium doesn't have a human corps forcibly indoctrinating living organisms into the ways of the machine, and attacking humans like Captain Power's Dread Youth and Overunits. In that case, Raymond Lawrence would be another Captain Jonathan Power, and Princess Laeticia will be another Corporal Jennifer "Pilot" Chase.

Star Ocean is like a Scifi Movie series where you either get a really enjoyable B movie with a decent budget, or A class storytelling with a decent budget that uses every cent perfectly; and then there are the 2 exceptions that nobody talks about, the first being the one almost nobody remembers and the second being the one nobody wants to talk about.

Star Ocean Til The End of Time was a masterpiece. It introduced trophies before I got into the PS3 trophy hunting phase. The multi characters were fantastic. I enjoyed recruiting NPCs for the crafting and even like the hidden VS mode. Plus, getting to and beating Gabriel Celeste and the Queen were such incredible boss fights for one of the 2 hidden post-game dungeons. Such high stakes going through the 2nd hidden dungeon's 211 floors. I got a lot of positives to say about it.

Guess I'm lucky in a semi-cursed way. Started with 360's version of SO4, I think I got 80% to the end but never quite finished it. Years later after remembering the fun combat I bought SO5 on PS4... full price on release... and oh boy dropped it 8 hours in. Then just last week I wanted to listen to some long podcasts and had nothing else to distract me so I thought "heh why the hell not?". Restarted and played SO5 through to completion on PS5 as a background game, which was made bearable thanks to the podcast. I was hungry for more and had no clue SO6 just came out, which was a nice surprise, bought it on a whim and OH BOY the quality jump!! In every possibly aspect. Now that the trash is out of the way, and after the amazing experience that was SO6, I want to get SO4's PS version (was so long ago I barely remember a thing - but I'll play with ENG dub for nostalgia's sake and as a guilty pleasure) and then freshly jump into 2 and 3. In the end I accidentally got into the series through the worst versions/games (SO6 aside) so things can only get better for me :p Thanks for the summary!
@celestrio2 жыл бұрын
SO3 was my entry game to the series. Since I played it first, it became my favorite SO. Maria helped solidify as my favorite cause of her ridiculously powerful energy burst attack. I just loved spamming it on Ethereal Queen as it was so satisfying. I then tried SO2 and one and loved SO2's story and it's huge cast of playable characters. It also helped that the game took a long time to beat which made it worth every penny. SO4 was tied to SO2 as my 2nd favorite. I really loved spamming Meracle's X-Clawon bosses after doing Blindside. Watching the bosses become helpless as I air juggle them ruthlessly was so satisfying. SO5 disappointed me as it felt so rushed, a lot of the music was recycled from SO3, game was too short (beat it in 14 hours on my first playthrough. Could've been 9 hours if I was stuck in 2 particular parts to provide cover which I kept failing), and lack of visiting other worlds, SO6 is pretty fun imo. Huge improvement from its predecessor. I liked how it followed the same character selection like in SO2 to see different perspectives. The thing I do enjoy in SO series is how most made references and small connections to other SO series. I find it fun seeing how it lead to the next. I'm still pretty sure Welch is part of the community that we saw in the plot twist in SO3 given she's wearing the same clothes as the 4D beings.

i really like how you intend to make this a video for newcomer to the Series and to show them what games are worth checking out but leave out the tiny...BIG thing in Star Ocean 3 (till the end of time) were you could die by Running out of frickin MP! Something that also had the Fanbase divided big on the game, you can even google now about that topic and still find how badly many fans felt about that system. i mean, maybe you have talked about it in another video (this is the first on i see from you) but i think its a big enough point that should have been mentioned here too.

The PS3 version of The Last Hope isn't the best way to play it but the "4K and Full HD Remaster" available on PC and PS4. It has all the changes in the International version and the language toggle. Even the PS4 version has a highly customizable graphics settings like a PC game. It isn't just frame rate or graphics. You can pick between 4 different resolutions,4 different types of anti aliasing,the option to turn self shadowing,motion blur and depth of filed on or off and you can choose to let NPCs and monsters render on the field from only up close,very far away or in the middle. It is insane how you can make a PS4 Pro struggle with an early 360 title.

I'd recommend going straight into Star Ocean 2! The only thing you really miss in the story is the nuances of why Claude's dad is famous. Plus you may find you want to play it twice 😉 Also either character is great to play as, and you can switch who you're fighting with regardless. As in, I've played as Rena before, but I don't like acting as a healer so I was mostly fighting as Claude or another more combat focused character, or switching around throughout the battle. Rena also can pack a punch though.

Still it holds a special place in my heart as I remembered it still all these years since. I played this one as a kid and loved it. Now we have the second story r out and I'm thinking about picking the rest up while they are on sale. I did pick up 5, years ago, and I felt the same way. Mainly the 7 character party battles which I wanted in a jrpg for a long time, until it happened. There is just so much going on on screen at one time it's unnerving. The first departure r and last hope I can pick up right now for under $15. The Devine force is $30 and the second departure r for $50. So to finish off the collection for under $100 would be nice since I already have 3 and 5.

Im of the opinion that with many long running rgp/jrpg series the first one you play is your favorite. This isnt true in some cases, but for me its been very consistent. For example FF10 was my first, and my favorite FF... hence I have huge connection, and love of SO3 as my first in this series. Its my favorite, and yes I loved the ending. I don't think it ruined anything especially when half the movies, and other syfi series out today also deal with multiverses/ alternate dimensions it really doesnt change anything. I can't see why anyone would have a problem with the twist. S04 combat was great, and blindsides were very cool. Story not so much. I played both the psp remakes ....and I can't remember anything about them like at all. Which is strange. Its been even longer since I played 3&4, but I remember tons about those games, but the 2d og games didnt resonate with me much I guess. Maybe I will go back and play 2 to revisit the hype, I don't remember disliking anything with the psp games, just cant remember anything stand out. I did not play SO5 "what is up with the title?" I heard its terrible so I skipped it. I will be picking up Divine Force though. All reviews I watched say its a return to form, and kind of a best of both worlds mix of 3&4. So I want to support it. Cross your fingers its good.

Now I want to check out the manga after you just mentioned it! Overall, I'm really enjoying the divine force. It's not perfect by any means, but there are lots of great things about it. I wish they optimized it better for the xbox one s as it looks pretty bad outside of cutscenes, but the combat is fun, the customization is great, the voice acting is great (minus the lipsyncing), the characters are all pretty different, and the story is pretty good too, even if it is a little predictable. I think the title throws people off from what's really great about the series. Star Ocean's gift is not its sci-fi tropes, but rather how it innovated open-ended gaming in ways we take for granted with open world games now. It used aLOT of clever mechanics for depth. Before I played this series I would never have guessed that being given the power to not only shape the story and party members the way you wanted to, but almost EVERY aspect of the playing experience through the skills menu and item creation could be done in a way that kept the story intact. It takes ALOT of diligence to do that, and no other franchise in RPGs has done it like Tri-Ace has.

In defense of Lymle, 18:04 As my memory serves, she was a child that learned quickly how to summon demons. This caused her to be mentally and physically stunted. VA wise, sure, it sounds emotionless, but it makes sense to me. Forever stuck as a child is very draining. I’d probably talk emotionless also.

2 was definitely my favorite. I didn't think 4 was terrible except for the 'Kay girl. That was terrible

Star Ocean: The Divine Force was the first SO game I've played, and I think I liked it more than Tales Of Arise. I somehow missed Star Ocean - series completely when I was younger. Not even sure if they were released here. Anyway, enjoyed divine force and I also have the last hope remaster waiting. Thanks for the good video. It was enjoyable to watch.

I'll be honest, Star Ocean: The Divine Force may be the best game in the franchise since Second Story. It has the dual protagonist system, and runs it well. Unique PAs and conversations depending on who you choose, and completely different scenes occurring due to actual party splits (when it happens, you only see your chosen character's side of the split). Item Creation is back to SO2's style, the story is pretty good, as is the voice acting. I definitely suggest you give it a play, it's 100% worth it.

Oh wow, those are some strong words! This makes me really excited to check it out. Honestly I wouldn’t ever expect any SO game to pass second story at this point so hearing you have it as runner up is about as good as it gets. Hopefully that bodes well for the series going forward

Thank you for this video. I just love this series so much. And I've only played 2 (multiple times as a kid), then more recently 1 on switch and then 6. I loved those too. Looking forward so much to SO2R and own SO3 and will eventually get to it.

Star Ocean 3 is my 2nd favorite game, only behind Persona 3. I played through the entire game 12 times, trying to get all the battle trophies(but also just because I was enjoying the game). Once I got 285/300 and unlocked full active mode, I don't think I ever got off of that starting satellite base before losing interest. My goal was to unlock the mode, but I never actually really used the mode. I think the saying "The journey is more important than the destination" is definitely true. The pacing of the game was also quite good. Very clear tutorial area and setting up of a main threat, a relatively simple planet to get you started, and to allow for more story elements to tie together. A larger planet that, while probably mostly filler, is fun filler. Honestly, by the time we left that planet, I didn't want to leave, because I grew attached to it. I'd probably play a whole game that takes place on that planet. I kept replaying the game because it was fun. I slightly disliked all the backtracking, but I enjoyed the battle system enough that it wasn't enough of a deterrent. The battle system was (mostly) just an upgraded version of Star Ocean 2's combat, and I played Star Ocean 2 several times through. Cliff was my favorite character by far. Battles just never got boring using him. The controversial plot twist in Star Ocean 3 is my single favorite story reveal I have ever seen. I think that even if the twist initially bothers you, the resolution of it has parallels to other common rpg tropes. The overall story aside from that plot twist is also quite good. I wouldn't call myself a star ocean fan, I just think 2 an 3 are really good games. 4 and 5 looked mediocre to me, so I didn't even buy them.

SO2 and SO6 are my favorites. The Divine Force is amazing and a solid JRPG. It’s a true return to form. I hope the series continues and they only get better from here on out.

You and me both lol. I think that’s why even though I do love the series, it’s always felt a little disappointing in some aspects with it never again reaching the extremely high bar that Second Story set

Till the End of Time is the best in the series, in my opinion. The Divine Force is enjoyable & return to form of the IP.

2nd Story is without a doubt my favorite overall but I will say I played Til the End of Time the most, mainly because I found the battle system and crafting system so fun to break. So far I’m enjoying the Divine Force quite a bit and it feels like a huge jump in quality. Exploration and gameplay are fast paced and fun. I’m not super deep into the story but it feels like it has potential.

Second story is really a master piece! I didn't know there is a remake, I might get it to remember the good times. I absolutely love till the end of time (and it's plot twist). It is not as good as second story but its totally worth playing. Some of the extra bosses are pretty tough. I didn't get to play the other more recent titles, I got discouraged by the critics.

I was introduced to the Star Ocean series with Til the End of Time. I absolutely loved that game. I thought it was a really fun battle system and the story was just so fascinating. By the time I learned that it was part of a series and that many fans hated that specific game, I stopped myself from playing the other games. I was afraid that playing the other games (especially the ones before Til the End of Time) would sour my memory of the game.

I'd still say to give them a shot if you ever get around to it. I've played SO4 and 2 now and while they were good games I don't think either of them really compare to 3 when it comes to how the battle system worked. 2's character progression IS really cool though and is pretty unique for an RPG.

I had just beat Star Ocean: The Divine Force. it sort of mentions Star Ocean 1 and 2 a lot at certain parts and many other in the series. But overall it was a really good game.

Despite its flaws, I kind of love SO4 because it's one of the only games I've ever played that really captures the weird anything-goes vibe of silver age sci-fi. It's a bit much at times, but it's the one game in the series that really fulfills the whole "Star Trek JRPG" vibe that the series had always projected. (Sadly, 15 hours into SO6, this opinion has not changed. So far it's merely been mediocre, aside from the fun combat, with way too much recycling of series tropes. Spoiler: you end up stranded on an iron age planet helping to fight a deadly plague. Sigh.)
@GothamiteYT2 жыл бұрын
yes!!! exactly!! this series is FANTASTIC when it goes all in on its sci-fi elements. SO6 is you being an advanced dude crash landing on a primitive planet AGAIN.

Star Ocean 2 is definitely the best in the series, and one of the finest RPGs ever; its place in the series really can’t be disputed. That said, I actually really liked 5/Integrity and Faithlessness! Definitely not the best in the series, but the gameplay absolutely holds up, and I quite enjoyed the banter between the characters despite the story being the weakest point.
