missing parts: -size of the gate -38 min law -desynchronisation/time dilation bug (connect to a black hole ) -time travel bug -exotic matter bug (pass through star) -gate proximity bug/security? (locks a gate when another gate is too close) still a good episode ;)
4 жыл бұрын
The 38 min is easy to explain. The Stargate is a huge energy storage device, when activated it is charged once by the DHD or another power supply. This energey storage is enough for an intragalactic wormhole about 38 minutes. As soon as the energy store is used up, the wormhole collapses. The weapon that Anubis used against Earth bypasses this reservoir and directly supplies the wormhole with energy, so that it can be kept open for an indefinite period of time. That is why the connection collapsed when the weapon was destroyed and not 38 minutes later. Extremely strong radiation, such as after an atomic explosion, can supply the wormhole with energy for longer. That's why the wormhole stayed open a few minutes longer in one episode when a nuclear weapon test was carried out on the other planet. If you select a planet in the gravity range of a black hole, as P3W-451, the flow of energy is much slower due to the time dilation. The wormhole consumes the gate's storage more slowly. Sooner or later this wormhole will also collapse, but only after many years or decades.

That you can't connect two Stargates if they are too close is probably not a bug. I suspect it's because a wormhole has to be a minimum length in order for it to stay stable. Otherwise Stargate could also be used to connect several planets in a planetary system or on one planet. In addition, the Stargate addresses do not really designate points in the room but areas of space. The number of addresses is limited and there are more planets in the Milky Way than there are addresses. So you could move the Stargate from Earth to Mars and it would still have the same address as Earth. And the fact that you cannot dial out when a second Stargate is active in the same area of space is probably a safety feature so that the wormholes do not cross or otherwise interact with each other and disrupt the transport.
4 жыл бұрын
The episode with the interaction of the star with a wormhole doesn't really make sense because the wormhole is outside normal spacetime. I wouldn't attach that much importance to the episode. The same applies to the time travel episodes and the film "Continuum". Normally, objects outside of subspace shouldn't have any impact on the wormhole within the subspace. The only meaningful explanation is that the gravitational field of stars, black holes and other heavy objects leave a "shadow" in the subspace, which can deflect or bend the wormhole. This contradicts the fact that Stargates are on planets and therefore within a natural gravitational field, when there are used.

The size of the Stargate is probably due to technical reasons. The ancients chose a size that is sufficient for most purposes (transport of people and material), but which does not require too much energy. The larger the Stargate, the greater the energy consumption. The wormhole itself is smaller than the Stargate anyway, i.e. the diameter of the wormhole of a supergate is not significantly larger than the diameter of the wormhole of a normal gate. Because only information and energy are transmitted from gate to gate, not solid matter. (Which makes the story of how a star's spectrum changed by a wormhole even more absurd.)

Going over the episodes of Stargate, I have been led to believe that while they may look the same on both sides, there is only one entry and exit side. Which is why a person exiting the Stargate cannot reenter to return, instead the stargate needs to be shut down and redialed from that location. Most Stargates have a ramp on only one side. Hmm, now you have me thinking, what would happen if someone tried to access the interface from the "back" of an active gate.

A question going through my mind brought me to your video, which was very informative. First, the question, how close to the Star Trek transporter is the Stargate, after watching your video has me thinking that they virtually do the same thing, decompose, send, and re-join. I am an avid Sci Reader and have been since at least the last 1950's. There was a story i read way back then that had a similar "stargate" like object but with a difference. Rather than decomposing a person or object to something that could be transmitted, this instead it would reduce the distance between the two "gates" to zero and create a doorway similar to the doorway between two rooms where you just stepped through. There was no interface as in the Stargate, instead you could see what was on the other side, similar to the device in the Star Trek episode The City On The Edge of Forever. The persons was not converted to energy, instead would simply walk through. Since it was almost 60 years since I read the story, that is all i remember.

What I never understood is how the startgate started to activate the chevrons on the other end when dialling, I mean, did all other stargates with the same first few characters started activating chevrons aswell and when the next character did not match they de-activated? 7 Chevron's dials a gate within its local Galaxy, the 8th chevron allows for intergalactic dialing, and the 9th Chevron is magic.😁 It's just kind of strange that the dialing process wouldn't require a 6 Chevron point of origin totaling 12 chevrons(6 for point A and 6 for point B). That clip you showed of Samantha Carter trying to explain the idea of a wormhole to Jack O'Neill reminds me of how glad I was that they went with Richard Dean Anderson's lightly humorous approach to the character as opposed to Kurt Russell's brooding approach. Movie Jack O'Neill was a bummer and if they had gone with that approach, I imagine the show would have barely made it to season 3.

Stargates themselves had pretty complex computers on board. This is evident based upon the earth gate usage and as well as the buffer that it had. We do not know much about this computer, as the DHD is given precedence in the shows. But it could be considerably more powerful than the DHD itself. Just isn't designed to be updated. Within the gate network the stargates will automatically every X years "dial" one another to update their databases. They will also need to update when moved. This should answer your questions 1, 3 and 4. For 2, they would use a MELP and figure out the address for earth ahead of time, although my understanding is that later on they didn't do this beyond a quick sensor check about the environment (which the gate probably can do as well). But most likely the simplest answer is easiest and that is the point of origin symbol was in the same place for each DHD. Which makes sense.

I would like to make one slight change based on the information given about Stargates in later season compared to information given early on. Where it’s talked about as an Event Horizon, a physical representation of the wormhole, I disagree yet would have been understandable assumption to make when she said it. The event horizon is not actually a result of the wormhole at all but a product of the gate as an barrier produced as part of the demolecularisation process. In order to breakdown matter from one side in order to be read and transferred in a form through the wormhole as energy it first need a way to in essence destroy the matter in a known location and use the energy from that process in the transmission and to reassemble it on the other side. The wormhole itself is formed behind the gate however it’s a micro wormhole that is completely invisible to the naked eye as black holes form in high energy collisions in reality. Evidence for this is shown in the episode when dialled into the black hole. It’s clear the point of gravity is located at a single point behind the Stargate itself. This is simply a way of the gates to create a wormhole on the relatively remarkably low energy required to activate the gate, having a micro wormhole energy can be transferred between two gates without needing to be large, size is not everything. Supergates for example may not actually have wormholes produced any larger than a standard gate however they do need the extra power in order for the vast distance covered and disintegration, reassembling process which covers a far larger area and vastly more matter in the transfer. The best example to show this is the episode where Teal’c is not rematerialised and stuck as a patten in the gate. They are able to form the rematerialisation field without a wormhole at all showing its not actually part of the wormhole itself but a product of the gate.

The Stargate Guy, I never though my comment/ramblings would actually be read by anyone this far after the video got posted. Thank you. That’s just my theory based on what we see in show, how it’s explained later in seasons and what actually physics details. You explained everything perfectly and it is often referred to in show and online as an event horizon but how it described in show use never actually matched what a true event horizon for a wormhole would be. I do however believe the unstable vortex is just a way to ensure that nothing could be blocking the path of an incoming traveler. As a wormhole to confirm connection would have to be established first, the amount of energy the gate puts into the initial field determines the vortex. Edit - It also explains how in Carters words she states no one has witnessed a correlative update between DHD’s. If the wormhole can be formed without the need to send matter through so no field, the Stargate coordinates can be updated without anyone knowing. It why Avenger activated no one noticed any random incoming wormholes. While having a subspace communication network between DHDs is possible, they clearly had that technology with communication stones I’m not convinced it’s the technology at play with the gates as the updates moved far slower throughout the system than with a direct subspace communication network, accounting for the time to dial.

How did they manage to dial all gates at the same time? This would imply that wormholes pass through a layer of subspace because.... 1. Gates have to beam from Gate A to Gate B. That means a solitary connection between two gates. 2. If the Dakara weapon could go from Gate A to all other gates, it had to pass through a medium. A physical object couldn’t go to all gates because it’s a finite amount of energy. An energy pulse powerful enough to engulf the whole galaxy could emerge from all other gates in sufficient quantity to do the job.

We also know they’ve been looking for the problems in their cloning for 1,000 of years. Could it be possible that the asguard where studying the bugs that the wraith are closely related to for their healing properties and combining their DNA in labs as we saw pop up in the Atlantis saga. Could the wraith be a failed experiment to replace the current asguard clones? We also know the wraith used cloning tech to win the war against the ancients. They also had technology that rivaled that of the ancients they had to get their start from somewhere right? The whole immortal and intelligent beings the wraith are would have made perfect hosts for the asguard minds. Also we know they where conducting unsanctioned experiments on humans in the Pegasus galaxy. Would explain the wraiths rudimentary understanding of energy weapons, slower hyper drives like found on Pegasus asguard ships, cloning, and their beaming technology and how wraith tech was better then most but not on par with ancients.

Hello Taylor. Discovered your channel after I rewatched Children of the Gods. I have a question about the Stargate I'm hoping you'll address sometime. In watching the Jaffa and Apophis exit the gate, I notice the gate stays on. After the Jaffa take out the Air Force guards and kidnap the female Airmen I notice they just walk through the gate. It's my understanding in watching the series that the trip through the gate is one way. Meaning after you make it to your destination you can't just walk through the gate to get back. You have wait or shut off the gate and then dial back to your destination. Was this limitation retconned later? Thanks. Also thanks for your channel.

Good stuff. Always interesting. One question that has puzzled me for many years is: Catherine's ex that went through the gate in the diving suite, how and why he survived the gate travel as he was still connected via the life cable. Surly that would have stopped he coming out the other side as a hole thing didn't enter the gate.
@KohuGaly
@KohuGaly 6 жыл бұрын
An exception the writers made. If you want in-universe explanation, here are several: perhaps the cable snapped maybe gate is smart enough to ignore the cable... I mean, imagine you enter a gate that is covered in cobwebs and part of the cobweb is stuck on the outside. That'd be a dumb way to die... That seems like a plausible explanation to me.

@Michael Nelms There's a lot of things that has been retconned in Stargate. Most famously is probably the fact that 3 shots from a zat disintegrates the target. The writers quickly abandoned that idea. I pretty much draw my line around the time that Daniel ascended. Any technical thing that hasn't been confirmed as canon AFTER that point is considered uncanon to me.

WE know that the last symbol dialed is the point of origin. You said that the symbols represented star gates. There are 39 symbols if memory serves. Now hold that thought. What are the base points for that coordinate system that they seem to be using. They use six planetary symbols to establish a point in space which makes no sense. And now back to the last symbol to be dialed, the point of origin. Does that mean that there are only 39 points from which you can depart?

@@pforce9 - No. All the other symbols represent constellations. Earth's symbol is unique. So, I think each world has a unique slot for point-of-origin that's probably on the same spot of the DHD. There is a bigger plot hole that depending on location, "constellation" symbols would change based on you position in space and several glyphs would be different, but the series kind of glossed over that issue entirely. That, or the movie was completely off (Daniel's explanation of addressing). Six symbols out of 38 makes an insane number of possible combinations. He just happened to notice "Orion" matched one of the symbols on the tablet and realized what the symbols represented.
@pforce9
@pforce9 6 жыл бұрын
@@qdllc All of this kind of goes out the window when you point out that constellations would look different from different locations.Anyhow since each stargate has the point of origin printed right on the ring, you can't steal someone's stargate and take to your planet, right?
@qdllc
@qdllc 6 жыл бұрын
@@pforce9 - Well, you could, but you'd have to reprogram the DHD to accept the point of origin on the gate as valid for that planet. One of the System Lords (Ba'al?) had enough know-how to reprogram stargate DHDs. If you scrutinize what's said in the movie against the TV show, a lot was left unexplained. Still if all gates had identical symbols (sans point of origin), you could have enough combinations to dial thousands of gates.
@KeithHomel
@KeithHomel 5 жыл бұрын
A question I've always had...how did they know the point of origin symbol to get home when they visited new gates? It couldn't just be a replacement symbol on the DHD/gate for the Earth point of origin. If symbols were different on each gate/DHD you couldn't move them from place to place, because then they would know where they lived...or at least they would have been programmed to a location and if they were moved would have to be reprogrammed.
@TheStargateGuy
@TheStargateGuy 5 жыл бұрын
As we go though the series we learn that just one symbol is swapped out with each set of gate/DHD. So yeah they would just look for the symbol they don't recognize and that's it.
@KeithHomel
@KeithHomel 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheStargateGuy But that's the problem I mentioned...each gate would have to be made specifically for one spot if the symbols change on every gate. Surely some points of origin match other symbols on the ring. So in that case are they doubled up? Doesn't seem like that would make sense. How were both the Earth gates the same? How did the gates they collected for Midway station work if they all have one symbol different? How could they use a different DHD/gate combo together if the symbols don't match? It's the one thing that has always bugged me. I suppose a possible solution would be that the tracking system the SGC built would tell them the point of origin before they went. But if they wanted to go anywhere else from a gate other than Earth's they might be in trouble.

Have they ever explained why the gate can transfer matter in only one direction but waves can travel both ways? If you wanna go through you need to dial from your side but if someone dials from their end to you the gate can still send from your side radio communiaction and video feed? I also always wondered - in the episode where they dialed every stargate in the milky way from Dakhara to send through the pulse from the ancient weapon to kill replicators - what would happen if a person walked through the gate on Dakhara at that moment? The buffers obviously still work (otherwise the pulse would not be sent to all those gates) so the buffer would send the information about the person to all the other gates and the person would practically be "cloned" countless times?

I have one nit-pick. You say the address works by defining position using 6 points on a cube + one symbol for origin. That is how Daniel Jackson interprets it in the original movie, when drawing the neat diagram. However, it's clearly not how the address works - to uniquely identify a point in space you need exactly 3 coordinates. No more, no less. The pattern is obviously not that simple, with the 6 symbols, though it definitely signifies position, since we see SGC calculate positions of worlds in the galaxy from address alone. Also, the last symbol is obviously not for origin, it's a terminating symbol that signifies end of address. The gate obviously knows where it is dialling from and portable DHDs (like the ones in puddle jumpers) obviously don't care what specifically the last symbol is.
@Marcus51090
@Marcus51090 6 жыл бұрын
The puddle jumpers don’t need 7 symbol dialling, watch SGA they always only dial 6 I assume the jumpers interphase with the network like a data link to automatically fill in the last symbol like auto prefix dialling on your phone it knows where it is when the dialling process begins I think it works exactly the same when the puddle jumper transmits dialling data the gate just automatically fills in the last symbol

@drewmandan
@drewmandan 5 жыл бұрын
The whole point of the 6 symbols was that you're specifying the address indirectly, relying on the assumption that there are enough functioning gates in the system to closely approximate the desired location at any given time. You can't do this with 3 symbols because they're just SYMBOLS, not coordinates. It takes 2 symbols to form a coordinate. Why? Because a coordinate is actually just multiples of a basis vector. You need a start gate and end gate to draw a vector between them. That's why it's 6, not 3.

The 9 Chevron combination is a MAC Address that only goes to ONE PLACE with a dedicated permanent address (like a MAC for a device joined to a network). So yeah. Capacitor would be more correct than superconductors For a device that's supposed to be nearly maintenance free the gate design kinda doesn't make much sense. Since there's constant stellar drift this device should have to be recalibrated once in a while. Problem made worst because gate is depicted as an electromechanical device. This would entail that not only will it require reprogramming or software upgrades , but may very well need rebuilding. Since there's apparently no one performing routine maintenance on these things, the primary plot device of the franchise is also it's primary plot hole.

standard trope of course, advanced aliens are selfish and arrogant and remarkably stupid if they are advanced by human standards. unless it's ST in which case your fed allies are advanced to ( near ) your level. but there you go

Isn't every scientific fact technically a theory (or falls under the umbrella of a specific theory) because they are always open to revision/correction?

You still consider Destiny's stargate a prototype? Was my assumption it is not prototype but _portable_ version disproven?

Ptrk Hrnk I always thought it was just a temporary network, until the ancients arrive and install a permanent galaxy wide dialling ability network.

@@Marcus51090 Portable, temporary, easy-to-made, all-in-one solution... I think we agree

The stargates that were seeded for Destiny were early prototypes that were specialized for data recording and processing. The data was sent to Destiny automatically when it was in range. They were designed to be expendable using easily mined materials that every solar system should have. It wasn't meant for transportation. It was a temporary system put in place that only needed to sort of exist until the Ancients arrived. Hence the shuttles as a backup option. The gate on the Destiny itself wasn't this type. It was a more generic prototype of the era. Hence it had the ability to dial gates that weren't in that same solar system. But ultimately, the gates themselves all had pretty basic capabilities and required an external device to operate unlike the later gates which were fully functional and safe to use without a DHD.

Lol Quantum engineered tachyon particles created out of water as to coincide with the fact that humans consists mostly of water Soap would be used to protect DNA from damage either used directly on skin so that a human can slide through the bridge Safely with the soap working as a shield for the DNA or the slider could use soap on a rubber suit And where time traveling clothes underneath the rubber suit? There's obviously a lot more to this process, but what it basically does Is punch a hole through the fabric of space and time creating a spaghetti effect with the water particles Leaving what would appear to be a wall of water in two different locations Distance is determined by density of the particles.
