I am guessing he grafted those mangos on dwarf hawaiian rootstock and his soil is compacted. Mangos on turpentine rootstock thrive in Florida's lime rich soil which is 9+ ph.

How would one do an initial triming of Mangos? I just planted 2 in HOT, dry and Windy NE Thailand and am afraid that my trees are a bit too whippy to stand up to the winds we get here.

Thats the way it should be. Mangos used grow in Indian subcontinent in wilderness for millenniums. Nobody even cared about spacing them. Indian Mughal empires used to distance the plants 10-15 meters in their mango orchard. They had mostly turpentine variety back then and few superior ones. With cross pollination a few majestic varieties emerged like Noor Jahan, Jahangir, Imam Pasand etc. India and South Africa are having high density mango groves for last 2-3 decades. They kept the trees on 7 foot centers and maintain the height to 7-8 feet . Recently, commercial variety like keitt, Kent are highly prone to mango bacterial black spot and botrysphaerial rot to such an extent that growers don't recommend these cultivars anymore in Florida. Hopefully, this is not the case in kauai Island......

depends what is used for root stock. Indian mangos like 7-8ph, Asian/West Indian 6-7ph. In general, mangos are not fussy about ph as long as soil isn't compacted. Fine roots cant uptake nutrients in compacted soil or in high salt concentration
