Good to see you back on it Simon, just working on a sett myself but they just wont show before dark. Hey Simon, nice to hear from you and hope you're keeping ok. I saw a few of your images with the lighting setup and they look great. As you know I use similar setup for owls. Thanks Ben and for the kind comment. Yes I switched to that over a year ago now from the Wimberley gimbal and find it a great piece of kit to use especially if you want to switch between stills and video. It enables those smooth panning shots. Thanks
@MrJeyjey27073 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, great video as usual. Now, Ive been feeding some badgers in our back wood since moving to a new house and know there are 3 visiting. Always after dark from 8pm onwards and Im at some point wanting to put the lights up you recommended so I can hopefully view them from the house, then ultimately photograph them once they are secure feeding under lights. Do you have any thoughts or tips on lighting the badgers, and would I also need a strobe when it comes to photographing them? Feel free to PM me if you dont want to take up too much space on this video thread...Cheers!
@SimonWantling3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the message. Nice to see people of still viewing my channel as I've not had the chance to release a new video for some time. You'll have no issue at all with the Badgers and light. They don't seem bothered with it at all. I personally wouldn't use a speedlight although again from my experience again it doesn't bother them dispite what people may say. I tend to use continuous LED lights which provide plenty of light to photograph Badgers. You don't need the expensive ones I use. Yongnuo sell a nice LED bank which are a fraction of the price at around £70 and can be brought through Amazon. Don't let me put you off speed lights. If you were to use them then use a low power at around 1/64th to 1/128th power. They would hardly notice that plus the short flash duration will freeze the action and the camera shutter speed can be very low. The Badgers will become quiet now as we head into winter so you may not see them much. They are partial to peanut butter and jam sandwiches 🙂
@MrJeyjey27073 жыл бұрын
@@SimonWantling Thanks Simon, I got the LED panels you recommended a month or so ago, and I am feeding them the sandwiches you mention. I've got the lights up tonight for the first time with bags on them so it will be trial and error as to the distance they need to be.. We have 3 visiting at the moment and they eat everything.. Then the fox comes and clears anything that's left.. Interesting to know the action will reduce in the cold, I can focus on the owls then.. Are they still active in the winter? Cheers
@SimonWantling3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJeyjey2707 yes, the owls will be active all winter. Come next Jan and Feb the Tawny Owls will become very active indeed as they start to breed. Sounds like a great project and hope you get some images soon.
@MrJeyjey27073 жыл бұрын
@@SimonWantling Simon, I used the LED panels you suggested last night. I had them on low for 5 hours, then turned them off and went to bed. This morning I looked at the power left in them...90%!!! If 10% is 5 hours...are we suggesting a full battery gives 50 hours?!! Unreal..I was planning on changing the batteries for tonight but I won't bother now...Brilliant purchase!

Excellent video can't wait to see the next ones in the series. I note you are using a video head with your long lens. Can I ask please is this to enable you to better shoot video as well as stills or do you prefer it to a gimbal
@SimonWantling3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. Thanks for your message and comment on the video. I first invested in the video head purely because I found myself needing to switch more between video and stills and smooth panning on a wimberley gimbal is not really possible. Having said that, since using it for over a year I much prefer it to a gimbal although I do still own one. One of the biggest things is weight as it's much lighter and much easier to carry on the tripod over the should which I do a lot. Not sure I'd ever go back to a gimbal setup having used this video head.

Why do the young deer bark. Is a territory thing or to attract females? And great video Simon.
@SimonWantling3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, thanks for the message. It's a bit of both really plus a warning call to other deer. The deer that can slightly be heard in this video is a Muntjac deer which are also called barking deer anyway so they do it a lot. I'd say with them it's a lot of territorial calls as there are lots of deer present. Glad you enjoyed the video. They also breed all year round so could also be attracting females.
