thx for good video. May I ask you why you have second cover on your lens and camera? Is the first layer not water proof?
@SimonWantling
@SimonWantling 4 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comments. The first layer is just a neoprene cover by lens coat to protect the lens from knocks and bumps, the second layer I used was a proper water proof cover which goes on when it's raining. Thanks

Do you think this would be helpful to protect while putting on teleconverters? Maybe even in dusty conditions like Africa? Thanks for sharing and wonderful info and video.

Thanks a lot. Yes I use it all the time that way. The cover comes way past the end of the lens so it is quite easy to connect an extender.

Isn't there a risk of the laser hitting the eye of the owl when it's flying and damaging it? I want to try using the Nikon Z8 in auto capture mode where it detects subjects and shoots automatically (and silently).

Hi, I don't use these covers in zooms myself. Mine are all in prime lenses so don't have that issue. Maybe they do one specific for zooms

In 2015 I purchased the LensCoat Raincoat Standard . Basically I used it a couple times a year and kept it clean and in a safe with my other gear. Last week my family had our annual beach week and I always covered my D810 -300mm VR to keep wind and salt air off. The tapes and the adhesive on the inside of the cover have completely dried up and crumbled. I spent an hour drying to get all of that crap out of every nook and cranny of my 810 and lens. This thing worked well but now it is a useless piece of crap. This is not a long lasting product. They claim it is made in the USA and if it is they should be ashamed

Superb piece of footage Simon and it’s great to see you back posting on your channel again. I have just read and watched the videos of the story of the Barn Owls and you have put it together brilliantly while emphasising how difficult their challenge is in being successful in raising their owlets. Looking forward to more instalments.

Thanks very much, that's really appreciated and I'm glad you like their story page as I've put a lot of work into it. Lots more updates to come as they continue to raise their young. If you do have any suggestions on how to improve on the page then feel free to let me know

@@SimonWantling I think your page is excellent Simon and I mentioned it to some of my photography friends in the pub last night. I liked that when I’d read that days report, the date of the next report was at the bottom which was handy but what would be useful is if you could click on that date so it takes you straight to the next days report. Not sure if this is possible as I know absolutely nothing about building websites. Keep up the Greta work Simon.

It's 2023 now and the E-M1X can be had for less than USD1,000 used like new with warranty, the 300mm f4 sells for USD2,000 used like new. I will pull the trigger on a EM-1X soon.

The way the velcro straps on the mid part of the lens work surely leave a "pocket" that rain will collect in? Ed: Just read richardpill's comment below. That'll teach me to go off half cocked.

You should educate yourself and stop promoting misinformation! You are kidding yourself if you think an owl doesn't notice a continuous light. A flash produces a continouous light for only 1/1000s compared to many seconds for your 'continuous light'!

All I can say is WOW ! Your photography is simply fantastic.I have always just adored owls. We reside on the western coast of Norway. A few days ago we heard this bump bump bump in our chimney flue. We continued hearing it for days. First it was in the upstairs and a couple of days later we heard it in our living room. This time we heard a bird sound. My husband took a thick padded glove and the next day went down to the basement and was able to open the flue down there. He said it was just amazing that he could remove the owl from the flue. I heard my husband stream out for me to come to the window. He managed to get a photo of this beautiful owl. The poor thing had been without food or water for days. He stayed with the owl and helped it until it was able to fly off into the woods behind our house. I pray that it survived. The owl didn't appear to have any damage to its wings or any other problems.
