Personally, my favorite thing to ever do in the game to torture myself is make a hardcore world with a single biome or with the infinite city activated and surviving as long as possible. Actually pretty fun and interesting, even in biomes where you wouldn't think you would survive very long like desert.

Btw, you can still mine wheat if you attempt to mine the bottom of the dirt instead, even without the proper level
