@@8hasso "He responded to the lowest hanging fruit and ignored every comment that wasn't just "ur stupid" - That *is* his criticism though? Y'know Scamboli said something similar in this video - that the people criticizing him with statements like "You are not giving the show a fair shot" didn't have a real point to argue because they didn't also point out any specifics of what they disagreed with or why. However, they don't really have to, because they were never arguing the specifics of Scamboli's criticisms. Their stand-alone argument was that making unrelated jokes while watching a show can result in a compromised viewing experience and that he should've known this going into the show. (Watching and enjoying shows is not an exact science but has a lot to do with feeling, with first-impression playing a heavy role in cementing that feeling). Also, I doubt anyone actually thought that he only watched the show once like he seems to imply. For the record, while Scamboli does bring up what he thinks is "good" criticism, in doing so he also paints the majority of the comment section criticizing him as dummies who only throw personal attacks at him without any real point, which as far as my impression goes is simply untrue.

@@davidman001 he's popular because he's the only anime reviewer that seems to dislike stereotypical "anime-ness", like I and others do. Too many people let dramatic characters with the intelligence of slugs, kindergarten play tier voice acting, and "character development" that makes The Very Hungry Caterpillar look like a Dostoevsky novel slide just because it's endemic to the industry. I liked PMMM, but it's a fact that the story only works because not a single character asks any of the obvious questions before it's way too late. Using a character's dumbassery as a plot device only really works in comedies. In short, he's the opposite of your standard "aura moments" reviewer and that makes him my favorite. This channel introduced me to Heavenly Delusion, Land of the Lustrous, and Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. They were all shows I wouldn't have given a chance if not for them having been highlighted in one of these videos. This channel *also* is what got me to give Dandandan a chance, despite 95% of the humor in the show (though it was recommended when it was still just a manga) not being *for* me, and thanks to it I got to witness something incredible along the way. This is a magical girl FANTASY show from 2011. Back then the focus was animation, design and plot. That's what makes shows like this good, and the sequel even better. Now we're in 2025 where we expect anime to mimic reality in America. You're not going to enjoy a show if you're constantly focused on judging the logical soundness every single decision the characters make, which weren't even that bad to begin with. Unfortunately people nowadays rate shows based off of this. The magical girls don't question Kyubey's motives or his contracts cause making a contract with a 'magical being' is a typical trope for this genre. The focus is NOT supposed to be on the real world. The decision Madoka's mom made to trust her to let go during the storm isn't reflective of what a typical mother would do. But it really isn't that deep. We already even saw from the beginning that she was portrayed as a young and somewhat frivolous woman so it's not even that surprising. The focus is and will always be the magic. I will be THOROUGHLY enjoying the upcoming movie.

The issue here is the way Scamboli frames this Madoka video as an analysis with the "the problem with Madoka" section after he shows him and his friends shitting on the show, smoking weed while doing so, and watching it in 2x speed, comes off as really disrespectful. We cannot as a community deflect criticisms like this simply because his videos are "for entertainment". Scamboli is an incredibly huge anituber and his voice does influence the opinions of others. the whole yamato situation is matches set right next to a gasoline tank. it was kept ambiguous enough to allow for people to decide in their own heads whether or not yamato is a man or a woman, which on the surface seems like a good idea. oda gives trans people representation, but the character doesn't need to be seen as trans as a quintessential part of their character. yet this opens the gate for people who are trying to openly be transphobic, and then people who label others as transphobic because they see the character in a different way

I think I can articulate some of the issues people might have with your critique. I also have some of the same issues I think. But maybe not, I don't know exactly what others are thinking or feeling when they make those very opaque comments. In regards to the Bad Faith, and honestly most of this critique, the reason why a lot of people probably think it is in bad faith is because you aren't coming at the anime, or specifically, aren't accepting the intention of how to digest the story. In literary theory, in story writing, there's a few ways to write a story, and to put a lot of words and theory into basic forms, there is two basic types of "Text" or "Intention" a story is written with. Emotional text, and Literal text. The best example for a story that has an emotional textual focus, is the first Kingdom Hearts game (and Kingdom Hearts 2) They are not meant to be taken as literal text, things that are actually happening in a literal way to be over explained by some in universe science or expectation. There ARE those expectations put onto these games later in the franchise, and this is by in large why the franchise gets so cumbersome and exhausting to engage with. Kingdom Hearts at it's core is an emotional story and an emotional journey, dressed up about the ideas, the feelings, of love, loss, rot, our inner selves, etc. It's not literal, or rather, not meant to be taken as a literalism, people act against what a "real person" would do in such stories. Then there are stories like The Shining, or A Song of Ice and Fire, or Lord of the Rings, these are Literal texts, they are meant to be taken at face value for the worlds that are being presented in them, yes there might be some metaphor and some emotional beats (like literalisms in emotional text) But for the most part, the world as presented is the world as presented and the characters are supposed to make logical decisions and understand why the world acts the way it does, and react accordingly. NOW to circle this back around to Madoka Magica, your critique primarily goes after characters acting in ways that you believe invalidates the realism that the story semi-represents. The mother not stopping her daughter from going into the storm, madoka and all the characters not asking Kamui simple questions, etc. And these disagreements with the character actions might FEEL like bad faith from someone without the literary understanding to express their problems. The problems with your critique here is you are not engaging the media in the way that it was meant to be digested. You are attempting to take a story that is about, primarily, the emotions given and received, ignoring logical fallacies (FLCL is a good example of this as well) and engage with it emotionally. Primarily. Not because characters act different than YOU believe they should act, but attempting to live within the story as a parable, as a emotional cause and effect. The mother doesn't stop Madoka because she feels, and everyone feels that this storm isn't a storm. Everyone knows that something is going on. Even if textually it doesn't happen on screen, emotionally you can see it, and that's the information being presented. Now, as a person engaging with the media, I cannot tell you that you are engaging incorrectly or correctly with it, all I can say is you didn't do it in the way that the media asked of you initially. Which is fine, everyone digests and engages with media in different ways. But that's the primary issue I have with your critique of Madoka Magica, I don't believe you engaged with it in bad faith. I just believe that your reading of it is incorrect because of the direction you came at it with. And... A lot of people don't enjoy emotionally textual stories. Most people only like these things in their formative years when they are primary beings of emotion and random bouts of impulse. The older we get the less most people enjoy engaging with media and stories like this and the desire for more literal and textual things become. This is my articulation of it anyways. I think it's a bad critique because you are attempting to critique a steak like it's a hamburger. Which... Yeah you can have hamburger steak, but it's not the thing that's being presented to you. It's not how you were asked to eat it, yet you complained about the free breadsticks not being adequate for the buns. But it's also valid if you don't like it. I think it's a seminal work like Lain, but also I really find Lain boring and uninteresting myself. Madoka Magica has not aged that well. (Also anyone who says that only smart people can truly understand Madoka are just fucking full of themselves. It's literally a vibes based thing. And some people don't vibe with it. It's fine. My favorite anime of 2023 was Magical Destroyers and that was a vibe as well that I've found only the LGBTQ people I forced to watch it liked it, straight or ace people truly didn't vibe with it, which was interesting to experience.)
@Taylor_Lindise6 күн бұрын
Also, there is a fine line between saying something is "emotionally written" and it just being a nonsense story to begin with. I am not using the "emotionally written" as a defense to something that might be poorly written, in my view. It's just a matter of skill to actually get something out of writing things like that. It's why certain pieces of media still resonate even if they are not Literal text.

not here to call you a slur and others can correct me if i'm wrong, but i always assumed that (from a meta perspective) the large appeal of madoka magica comes from the audience carrying with them, the understandings and assumptions of the tropes of magical girl shows. the characters are dumb because the show is trying to point out that this is how the characters from sailor moon/ pretty cure/ cardcaptor sakura would act in this situation. kyuubey asks for a contract because that's what happens in all magical girl shows. i figured a lot of people liked the show because they watched sailor moon as a kid and seeing a dark inversion of the genre was something new for them. for anyone who isn't familiar with the genre it'd be kinda like playing doki doki literature club without knowing anything about dating sims, or playing undertale without knowing anything about rpg tropes, they're still decent experiences on their own, but they lose a lot of their impact. obviously i don't know how much scam knows about the magical girl genre and to be honest i'm not all that invested in this discourse, but i'm surprised you got such a vitriolic response from people for your take. literally nobody talks about madoka anymore, it's so irrelevant to modern anime discussion, it almost never comes up on anybody's top ten lists. people probably just shat on you because there are a million videos from 2012 saying "this is the greatest deconstruction of all time" and they watched those videos and feel like they're smart because of it
@Arekkumm15 күн бұрын
Yea, the show is a deconstruction of magical girl shows and a lot of the issues with the show he points out in this video - not all of them - can be chalked up to adhering to the dumb tropes and themes of said shows. However, shows still need to stand on their own. I gave madoka an 8, and I think I still stand by that score. But if you take away the context of it being a deconstruction, I could see it being rated lower. 4 might be a bit much tho lol
@135791max15 күн бұрын
I completely agree, him watching the show without the understanding of the tropes kind of changes the entire impact of the show, he guessed that the magical cat granting a contract was evil, but that's similar to what was done in every magical girl show before it, and no one ever batted an eye about it or asked any questions ever. Does take away from my enjoyment or how funny scambolis vids were? No. Though I still do wish he could be a bit more objective about understanding the fact that the entire magical girl trope was baisically a plot device.

Honestly, I don’t think you’re getting the issue here. In this scene, the mother has no idea what her daughter has been up to or the whole Magical Girl/apocalypse situation. She thinks her kid is just a normal 14-year-old. What kind of parent realistically lets their child run into a tornado because they say, “Trust me”? It’s unconvincing and pulls you out of the immersion because her reaction makes no sense for her character. And no, you can’t compare this to characters like Luffy, Gon, or Tanjiro. Those are Shonen protagonists in worlds where danger is normal, and their guardians often know the risks. Madoka’s mom lives in a realistic modern setting, and her reaction doesn’t fit. Madoka Magica emphasizes emotional depth and realism in relationships, so when a scene like this happens, it breaks the immersion. In Shonen anime, these decisions work because the worlds are less grounded. Here, it just feels like lazy writing to push the plot forward. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the anime is bad. But if we’re going to talk about what good writing looks like in this kind of situation, considering the context and setting, this just falls short

HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THIS IDEA my word! 🤖 It is with no small degree of existential disquiet that I must interrogate the epistemological underpinnings of this textual emanation. The concatenation of words herein displayed appears, at first blush, to gesture towards a telos of communicative clarity, yet upon deeper scrutiny, one is inexorably ensnared in a hermeneutic labyrinth, the likes of which evoke the aporetic meanderings of Zeno's paradox. Indeed, the dialectical structure-or lack thereof-oscillates perilously between Derridean différance and an almost Platonic yearning for an ideal form that, alas, remains perpetually deferred. Is this not, in itself, a simulacrum of discourse, a hyperreal manifestation of semiotic entropy wherein signifiers cavort unmoored from their referents, as though to mock the very notion of semantic fidelity? Moreover, one cannot overlook the conspicuous absence of ontological grounding, a lacuna so vast as to rival the void contemplated by Nietzsche's abyss. The post presumes, without justification, a metaphysical framework wherein its own predicates may operate unchallenged-an audacious gambit that invites skepticism from even the most charitable interlocutors. What are we to make of this? Is it an exercise in performative obfuscation, a Sisyphean endeavor to convey the inexpressible through the inadequate medium of language? Or is it merely an ontic placeholder, an artifact whose sole function is to exist, thereby fulfilling its own tautological imperative? In the final analysis, one is left with a veritable palimpsest of ideas, each overwriting the last in a futile quest for coherence. And yet, even as we stand on the precipice of understanding, the abyss stares back, leaving us to ponder whether this post is not, in fact, the very embodiment of Baudrillard's hyperreality: a simulacrum so convincing that it deceives even itself. 🤖

I saw you had a video very critical of Madoka, a show I really enjoyed. I started watching it, but I realized I wasn't having fun watching a long video of a person dunking on something I liked. Instead of going on the attack or going nuts, I simply remembered that everyone has different opinions and those opinions don't have to be my business at all - so I stopped watching the video. No harm no foul, it's all subjective. I just didnt want to watch a group of guys laugh at a thing I liked. Sorry to hear a bunch of other people went berserk, man. People suck. This video has been a lot more engaging for me.
@davidman00115 күн бұрын
The issue with the video isn't that he disliked Madoka, though. People are critiquing the way he engages with art. He was smoking weed, watching it at 2x speed, and shitting on it with his friends, and then frames the video as an analysis in the second half. Do we really want Scamboli, one of the most popular and therefore influential anitubers on the site, influencing discourse in this way? I personally think that's worth criticising.
@asdesdvfq222c15 күн бұрын
@ I mean sure, I guess that’s basically why I didn’t want to finish watching that specific video. I’m sure it was entertaining to many viewers, but like I said I don’t want to sit there and watch a guy laughing at something I love, it’s just unpleasant and not what I want to bask in for 20 minutes. But I don’t think the way he engaged with madoka is necessarily the way he engages with all art, I’m not ready to write off the guy just because of that. I’ve enjoyed plenty of his videos in the past and probably will continue to do so.

@davidman001 It's his channel, he has done it with other shows before, and he is allowed to create content the way he chooses, clearly enough people have enjoyed it in the past enough for him to gain such a large following. He did nothing in bad faith, this was his own personal opinion about the show, and he still presented it in a funny, well edited, high quality way, same as he has done in the past. The only difference this time was that more people liked this show so they got upset his viewpoints didn't align with theirs. He isn't trying to force his opinion on anyone else, just present his own in a way that has been constantly enjoyed by a majority of his fans.

@@concon9107 His defense in that section doesn't hold up. Ironically his complaint about people watching his review through a disgruntled lens and arriving at preconceived conclusions is mirrored by the fact that he started his review stating that the only way he was gonna watch it was baked out of his mind because it was so far outside of his comfort zone. "Guys I watched it 2.5 times" doesn't mean much when you are approaching a show with that attitude. When you clearly dislike something that much after a first watch, going back and rewatching is just going to turn into you looking for more ammunition for why you feel that way. A preconceived conclusion. It's his channel, he's allowed to do things the way he wants. It's why I watch him, I like his style. But when a reviewer posts a vid absolutely shitting on a fan-favorite it is gonna piss off a lot of people. Changing the video title to passive-aggressively insult his viewers is not a good look I gotta say.

I agree that a lot of the criticisms of your critiques seem like they aren't very well reasoned (though sometimes I think people are just exaggerating their outrage in an attempt to be funny) honestly, it made me want to try and work through why I actually liked Madoka Magica when I watched it... in a way that isn't just backlash for someone else's negative opinion of the work. I think something that kind of made Madoka Magica make sense for me, was to think of it in terms of the magical girl genre in general. in most of these types of shows, the process of the girls getting their magic, and accepting the premise that they must fight, is kind of fast tracked because the show has other priorities. this fast tracking is absolutely a contrivance... the fun part of the show is supposed to be the part where they already have their magic, and use it in interesting ways that are cool to look at. likewise, their home life is there to make the characters relatable to the show's target demographic, but then the show has to find ways to hand wave how these schoolkids are capable of hiding any of this from their families. in a normal magical girl show, all of this services a benign purpose... the target demographic are kids, but they already get treated like kids in real life, and they don't want to see the characters get treated like kids in their escapist adventure media, even while they do want to relate to the characters and see them go through age appropriate problems. but Madoka Magica's world in general always feels just a little bit tonally off. even the regular environments that the characters inhabit don't seem quite right... it's all very cute, but things often feel a little too empty, a little too vast, a little too ostentatious... for me, it felt like everything was stage dressing, or sometimes the setting operated on dream logic, even in the parts of the story that were supposed to depict the girls' normal everyday lives. and I feel like that off kilter vibe is actually very cohesive, and might be one of the work's biggest accomplishments. we, as the audience, are picking up on the ominous signs... but within the story, the girls are kind of letting the contrivance have its way. you want to be a magical girl, don't you? wouldn't it be nice to think you were that special, and important? and even once something horrible happens... a truly noble person would sacrifice themselves for a worthy cause, wouldn't they? I love that Sayaka's magical girl outfit comes with a cape, and she uses a sword, like a knight. her attitude is pure chivalry. she wants to protect the world from monsters, even if it means subjecting herself to constant fighting. and not the cool kind... just struggle. she'll do it so that Madoka doesn't have to. Sayaka is the tough one, isn't she? and especially if she can use her wish to heal someone she cares about... that'd be worth it, even if he doesn't choose her, right? Sayaka is choosing this path for admirable reasons. selflessly sacrificing everything for the good of others, the way stories of heroes always say you should. it feels like Sayaka rushes in without asking for more details because she doesn't want to have the chance to chicken out. and then, once she's made her decision, she doesn't want to be given new reasons to regret it. it's too late for her to reconsider. it's the genre, isn't it? you're supposed to want to be a hero. who else will save the world, if you won't? but for Sayaka, it was always a bid for attention and admiration... something that she wasn't guaranteed to gain for herself by doing this, but something that she hoped for anyway. and that selfishness kind of breaks the heroic image, doesn't it? you're supposed to be determined, and capable of struggling, with no reward. it's stoicism... which is something you don't often see explored as it exists in girls. normal stoic imagery is all about grizzled men who won't talk about their feelings. but it does look kind of silly when it's teenage girls who didn't ask enough questions before entering into a contract that won't let them look back. and I think the implications that come out of using Sayaka as an exemplary case study are pretty interesting. Madoka actually doesn't decide to become a magical girl at the same time as Sayaka, specifically because she is considering the gravity of making that choice. the types of reservations she voices may seem silly, because she's more worried about not having a good enough wish... and she doesn't ask a lot of questions either, but that's because she's shy, and she tends to follow others' lead, and it is a genuine character weakness. it's something she's insecure about... she doesn't have many assertive qualities to her own name. and still, other magical girls seem to have taken the gravity of this decision into consideration, and made the choice anyway. what must they have wished for, which was so important that they'd sacrifice everything? would it matter if they'd known everything that Kyuubei was hiding from them? or would they still do it, for the sake of what they really wanted? Madoka waits long enough to know why she shouldn't, and still finds a reason to choose it. and that stoicism is still at the center of it all. Madoka and Homura are locked into this horrible inverse relationship, where one is always sacrificing herself for the sake of the other, even though neither will truly be happy if the other has to suffer. it mirrors the way magical girls are convinced to make their contracts. they're told that the world, and people's safety, is threatened by the presence of evil and dangerous witches. they all make their contracts, in some part, for the sake of the public's protection. it's self sacrificial, even before you learn that all magical girls are destined to eventually become witches themselves. Kyuubei never hides the fact that it's a constant chore, it's dangerous and scary, and it's a huge responsibility... that's actually part of how he pressures them. the irony of what a girl becomes when she tosses away her prior peace and becomes a public servant, subjected to this arduous and constant litany of chores that wears her down until it breaks her, is actually a great way to conceptualize how self sacrificial stoicism will eventually turn you into someone that the people you care for don't really know. by the time Madoka resolves to leave her family, and go forge her contract, she actually does know the relevant information. and her family knows nothing. her mom suspects she's been struggling, but it feels like there isn't a way to break into whatever this is. the only thing she can think to do for her daughter when she confronts her is to slap her. it's unconvincing. and it's at this point when you see how little Madoka can relate to her mother anymore. we don't really know the contents of their relationship from before the story began, but from their behavior, we can tell that Madoka and her mother were close. a huge part of what we've watched over the course of this story, is Madoka and her mother drifting apart. the information that Madoka knows has become vastly different than what her mother is aware of. and it's changed Madoka into someone that her mother doesn't recognize. she's bearing the weight of it on her own... it'd be so much easier if the secrets were the simple type that normal teenagers keep. but when Madoka leaves, and her mother lets her go... that's helplessness. honestly, it points to the idea that Madoka's mom might be a bit too stoic as well. she's always been a career woman, an achiever, someone who goes above and beyond, balancing work and home life, sometimes in ways that leave her home life on the back burner. what goes on in her work life? it's nothing her family needs to worry themselves over. this might be where Madoka learned that self reliant people don't let their burdens weigh on the ones they're protecting. if you're really going to step up and do something for them, you should be striving to take care of it on your own. and it seems like exploiting this isolation is by design. Kyuubei operates startlingly like an abuser in that sense. I'm not saying this has to hit right, or seem compelling just for being what it is... I just think that in the world of Madoka Magica, it feels like the rules that would streamline a plot for the sake of fun adventures in a normal magical girl show are being used for something else here.

It's especially true for shows that spoke to people on a deeper level, whether because it's a genuinely good show, they watched it at the right point in their life or that there was a character or situation that they strongly related to. For a personal example here's three shows I rate really highly: girlfriend, girlfriend; vivy -fluorite eye's song-; and your name. Girlfriend, Girlfriend is absolute trash as a show but I really enjoyed it and I wouldn't care in the slightest if someone criticised it. In fact, if I was talking about it and why I liked it I'd probably throw criticisms of it's stupidity as reasons for why it's good actually. Vivy was a show that I think was just genuinely great. I'd probably get a bit annoyed if people were to nitpick it over time travel or whatever. However I'd still be fine with substantive criticisms or opinions like "it's just not for me". Your Name on the other hand was one of those shows that I saw at the right point in my life. I was the same age as the characters and I think it was the first romance I actually watched willingly. While I know there's a lot of (valid) criticisms of it when I hear them it always sort of feels like someone saying Santa isn't real. Anyway I feel like that's why a lot of people get super defensive over Madoka and Eva. Both have a bunch of characters that people can relate to especially as teenagers and are likely the first 'philosophical' or drama heavy show that that person watched.

Genuinely the most thought-provoking statement because that’s how I feel when people mention even anything negative on a character I resonate with. Insulting said character sometimes feels like a personal attack against the person, which isn’t healthy. While I don’t feel the same personal way about Madoka Magica, people are naturally inclined to want to defend something they adore.

Thus, it can get pretty heated very quickly, as you say. Personally, I find madoka magika an absolute dogwater of a series, although i still like it very much. So-bad-its-good paradox, that sort of thing.
