Totally agree on the numbers game. Any performance car nowadays is gonna be fast, gas or electric, but electric is gonna smoke it in the real world. What matters is how the car makes you feel- the experience. That's all I care about anymore. Does it give me a smile? Is it fun and rewarding? That's what really matters.

Agree, it’s how it makes you feel, but not sure electric will be faster in anything but a straight line drag race. They’re so much heavier, have limited range, and take ages to charge. They’d definitely lose a rally, or a race on a track that lasted more than, say, an hour.

The state of this car reminds me of how Cammisa talked about the 991.2 911. A 911 that doesn't have any performance-enhancing options (like rear-wheel steer, adjustable dampers, etc.) ends up being an incredibly satisfying car because it feels more natural and as close to the ethos of the original car as one can get in a modern version. Lap times and raw speed are so overrated compared to getting the driving experience right.
@shahaknagiel28452 жыл бұрын
Camissa also put out a good video about the history of the M3 -- complements this one nicely, actually -- and has some similar things to say about the purity and fun of older/slower cars (the E30 M3 in that case). I just wish I could afford an M3. Why did BMW discontinue manuals in their 3 series?
@rlsedition2 жыл бұрын
One of the earlier generations of the M3 was my favorite attainable performance car, but no longer. It's not that my expectations have changed, but BMW has, as the Brits say, "lost the plot". The latest M3, even this one, is way larger than it needs to be, which results in in it being heavier as well. To add insult to injury, the exterior and interior are way over the top; some would say it's ugly. My attainable dream car is now the Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio and my current ride is the Ti Sport model (now Veloce). I use it almost daily and the blend of chassis competence, real-world performance from the 4-cylinder motor (power + fuel economy) and aesthetics is without reproach.

@@shahaknagiel2845 I understand that, but they are almost gone, primarily because of technology. The greatest sports car makers don’t do manuals anymore.
@alangil402 жыл бұрын
Most people don't buy new manuals as most driving enthusiasts can't afford these cars new, instead they are purchased by wealthier status seeking individuals who are not driving enthusiasts. Then the script completely flips on the second hand market when the average driving enthusiast can afford to buy one and 6-speeds are often the more desirable choice. At least that is what I have observed. I have 5 manual cars currently and a Tesla all bought pre-owned. Also in the real world, 99% of the time, the Model 3P will be faster than the Comp Xdrive M3. I have a Tesla Model S P90D and a couple of BMWs and a 911, but for pure acceleration its not even close because in the real world the Tesla is always ready at any instant, no need to be in the right gear, to need to build revs, etc. So as the video says, you enjoy the manuals and the ICE cars for the driving engagement and road feel.

Great and fair overall analysis. For all those complaining about looks or 0-60 times, you're missing the bigger picture of how rapidly this type of vehicle (manual sports sedan) is evaporating from the market, and that we should be thankful BMW still makes it. When we're all driving single-speed EVs in ten years and bragging about -- how quiet the motors are? how good the autonomous mode is? -- I suspect drivers will look back more fondly on the mechanical texture and engagement that comes with a car like this, warts and all. Between the alternatives of a more raw, unrefined Mustang, a lower spec WRX, or a princely yet less practical GT3, the M3 is really the goldilocks in the market. The CT4-BW is likely the closest real competitor, though even it seems a touch smaller and less refined overall, even if the dynamics are top notch.
