8:08 He's conflating social media with the Internet here. You'd have to go back to *before* his time and before social media to see how it got this way. The funneling of most Internet traffic into a few corporate social media sites is the very reason the oligarchs were able to apply mechanisms of control. The Internet was decentralized before social media, as it was intended to be. Everybody had their own website before then. Nobody wants to now because they've lost sight of the real reason for doing it. They think the reason to build a website is to become the next tech billionaire or whatever. That's wrong. Freedom is the real reason. I have a whole sticky thread on my site about this. Link in profile.

There is no "competition" between independent websites. It's not a zero-sum game. There's literally room for everybody to carve out their niche. Just because somebody else's site is doing well doesn't mean your site failed. People can enjoy more than one website. You don't lose users just because your users are also using other sites. We need to forget that way of thinking.

google and microsoft did not have social media site until they bought their own. What they did and still do own is the search engine, operating systems, and Internet browsers. Amazon is the biggest provider of cloud computing. Fun fact, Rumble and kick use AWS. That is a tighter grip on the Internet than social media sites.
