The State of World Jewry Address: Bari Weiss

The inaugural State of World Jewry address was given in 1980 by Abba Eban. Over the four decades that followed, Eban's epochal speech was followed by those from luminaries including Elie Wiesel, Natan Shararanky, Amos Oz, Bernard Henri-Levy and many others who offered their profound insights into the triumphs and tragedies of Jewish life in modern times.
Not since the founding of the State of Israel has the Jewish people faced such a crossroads. What is our future? What are our priorities? How do we secure our community for generations to come?
After Bari’s remarks, she will be joined by 92NY’s Rabbi David Ingber for a Q&A with the audience. Bari Weiss is The Founder and Editor of The Free Press.

Thank You Bari! What an incredible in-depth speech. As a working artist actively involved in the art world, your statement about Jews in the arts truly resonates with me. I have always been unapologetically Jewish and Israeli. It’s been difficult since forever in this seemingly “progressive” field. I’m 42 and I attended an Art university in Brooklyn during the second intifada. The hate and ostracization I experienced was shocking and unexpected, considering the source. I grew up in a neighborhood in Chicago with many Arabs and other immigrants from around the world who were shocked to learn that I’m a Jew, since I read “Arab” and not “Jewish”, thus the hate ensued. I’ve been jumped, spat at, verbally abused, you name it. So experiencing anti Jewish sentiment on a liberal college campus left me feeling hopeless. Fast forward to October 7th and I must say that I wasn’t surprised by the backlash and lack of empathy for Israel. Personally, I lost 7% of my followers for simply creating work that addressed the hostage situation or artwork that is categorically Judaica. Nothing negative was said about Palestinians. However, the fact that I’m telling my truth through my work, through my lens, as an Israeli American Jew of Middle Eastern descent, and that’s what riles up people?, tells me that I’m doing something right!
