The Statue of Leonidas
The magnificent statue of Leonidas, King of Sparta, stands belligerently in front of the city's stadium, since 1969. Leonidas with his 300 Spartan warriors, fought the mighty Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. When the Persians told the Spartans to lay down their weapons, Leonidas' response was 'Molon lave' (Come and get them).
This imposing bronze statue is work of the Greek sculptor Vassos Falireas (1905 - 1979), who was one of the most important representatives of the academic school of sculpture in Greece during the 20th century. The statue is the landmark of the city and one of the most important and photographed spots. It reminds to all of us, the majestic history of Sparta, the bravery and the achievements of its heroes.
