So, I've spent a year with the Steam Deck. With that, it's time to take a close look at its pros, cons, competitors, and surprises! Is the Steam Deck worth it or merely a fad? Let's dissect the ins-and-outs of the handheld and get into it.

The Steam Deck is important because it pushes Linux gaming forward. That alone would make it difficult for me to support other PC gaming handhelds that will just run Windows because those will just slow this movement. Every Steam Deck Verified badge I see is a win for Linux and I love how Valve built this environment where devs are actively making their games Steam Deck Verified when it was nigh impossible to have devs support Linux before.

Steam Deck has (no pun intended) been a game changer for me. I work from the same desk I make music and game at, so taking the gaming away from that stagnant space has been so refreshing to say the least. Games run amazing on this device and the cloud saving is incredible. I have been running through the RE4 remake and to be able to jump back and forth between pc and the deck has been so fluid and easy. If you game, buy this.

@@str8poisintv131 Honestly would say it depends. If fps and graphic fidelity are a huge factor for you when enjoying a game then you probably will miss your xbox. I honestly think I play on this device more than my desktop with a 3070. I still love the desktop experience, but the Deck is so convenient and comfortable. Its value is nearly impossible to beat.

@@grahamjl766 I will say, if you're largely looking for emulation and indie, maaaaybe you'd be better served by an "emulation handheld" something like the Odin Lite? It's on sale for $200 right now. These things are Android-based so no Steam except streaming, but they're little emulation beasts and the Odin is the only one that can handle all of PS2 and GC without many issues... otherwise you could get something much smaller like a Retroid Pocket Flip or one of Anbernic's handhelds.

@@istealpopularnamesforlikes3340 The Ally looks cool, but for most people, a Steam Deck will work absolutely fine. Personally, I don't even know if I would want to use a PC handheld that doesn't have dual trackpads. Also, the Ally is going to be sold at a significantly higher starting price point. It's looking like a good product and I'm sure it will find an audience, but it won't replace the Steam Deck. If Redfield has been saving up specifically for a Deck, I recommend that they get a Deck.

Tales of Arise on the Deck is amazing. ALso Marvels Spider Man runs and looks great on the deck. My favorite games to play on mine is the Ys games, Emulation, Gamepass, Scarlet Nexus, Skyrim and Oblivion. There are many others. I played maybe 10 hours or so of Hogwarts Legacy on my Deck because my wife wanted me to sit next to her on the couch while she played it on her Xbox. I have not had any issues playing cloud gaming through the browser instructions MS provided to launch through the Steam OS. I think the Deck is amazing for the price. Full review from 6 months of ownership from 256gb owner. It has all the advantages of a low end gaming PC with a few extra Linux OS related shortcomings that come with a neat console like gaming mode interface. The SteamOS overlay in gaming mode could have used more dedicated hardware resources to make it snappier but it functions well. Sending screenshots in friend chat has some jank. It's slower at times when you are running games. I've had some crashes and forced restarts. Nothing major though. Expect some jank on that end. The OS is mostly good but its a bit unfinished. Shader caches means constant updates and that's an issue on data capped connections and on the 64gb option. So go 512 or 256 if you are uncomfortable replacing the drive. Keep in mind with the data issues, this is coming from a guy who lives in the country and has Hughesnet 50gb data limit that limits his use of many online things. To be replaced by Starlink when Elon gets around to our area. There are some headaches with an online only device for me that you may not have, and I still think the issue is with shader cache sizes relative to the 64gb drive not that there are shader caches to download all the time. If you never used Linux, it takes some getting used to on the Desktop mode and you'll want to look up how to tweak things from how Valve has it set up. Like deleting large files. Move to Trash versus a permanent delete and you having to cut on perma delete option. Small things. Formatting the microsd card for better performance options. It's nothing hard to do, but it's different from Windows. Just look it up. Now it's all second nature for me. At the start, I was looking up "what is the Linux equivalent of x" a lot because of my heavy Windows use. There are tons of differences, but nothing that took more than a google search to find out. Take a few days after playing your initial game to just get used to the quirks. Valve has done a great job with OS updates. All of them feel substantive. With the new Steam OS versions, you can just move your games to Deck from a gaming PC of yours to prevent redownloading or manual usb transfer so that's cool for me. If the Steam machines were Valve's alpha, the Deck is definitely their beta. It's not quite where it needs to be but its a working product that is definitely improved over my 6 months of use. The one thing I haven't tried with the OS is dual booting Windows. I haven't a need to because usually the Steam OS works well. As far as games, its no guarantee every new AAA game will run well on it long term. It was a low end when it released. So its the best to treat the available AAA library as whats going to available and be presently surprised if a new game runs. That said there is tons already available so its worth it for the backlog alone. Days Gone runs extremely well. RE4 Remake is really smooth with the right settings. You may have to do very simple some software tuning to get God of War running well because the PC version has the memory leak that gets worse as you turn up the settings. Look up CryoBytes on youtube and get his cryoutilities, The SWAP file increase is what fixes the memory leak crash issue. Returnal is very finnicky. Tuning your settings a bit will result in your best 27 fps locked setting. To get that higher you'd need to undervolt and overclock(which carries risk) or have a game patch that improves it. Mostly listing the PlayStation PC port games here because they are the ones that are hit, touch n go, or miss lately. The Last of Us Part 1 being the biggest launch letdown for Deck users in a while and that doesn't bode well. As far as older games, some really old ones don't have gamepad support built in or the text when playing in portable mode is too small. You may experience jank if you are trying to play Condemned Criminal Origins with its imperfect gamepad support. Got to use mouse/trackpad on pause menu type stuff. Its playable, but its annoying to be forced into something unintuitive. Shadow of Mordor's issue is unreadable text on some screens when in gaming mode. You can fix this but you you'll need to look up what settings to change. The game runs fine. Others with the same issue have proven harder to fix for me. Lot of tinkering like PC gaming in general, but the Deck has some unique issues. You might use the dock to TV and DualSense with Desktop mode to avoid all that. Some Unity engine games require extra work to get running so a few indies are not "plug n play". This is where dual booting Windows would just fix the issue. Other than those issues most things run well enough. Other games just work perfect like I mentioned Days Gone ran extremely well. I played the game twice on Deck, first on Hard 2, then 100 percenting the game on Survivor 2 NG+ and it crashed 8 times over two 40+ hour playthroughs. Only twice very early the first time when I still screwing with settings but I was in offline mode the first time and online the next. What's funny is had to download a new shader cache after this crashes so its like the Deck just wants me to update the game or play in offline mode. Not sure what exactly happened though because the crashes were pretty random. Red Dead Redemption 2 runs, no crashes 20 hours in. Cyberpunk runs about how it does on a normal PC. I could list off way more that run well enough that definitely make the asking price worth whatever you are paying. I know I played quite a bit of Ace Combat 7 and besides battery life getting wrecked the game ran buttery smooth. Emulation? Resistance Fall of Man runs. Heavenly Sword runs. Later PS3 games not so much, but emulator optimization might add some. You can stream through PS Now for some of them as a possible option if you have the internet(I don't). Speaking of which, you can do the same with Xbox Cloud by using Microsoft Edge. I've seen the guides. Switch? Most of those run. Have Persona 5 Royal on Steam and the Switch version so I tested it. Switch version will run a mostly smooth 30fps except occasional emulator caused audio glitches and slowdown. This happens like every 4 hours or so. Steam version solid 60fps. Every Switch game I took the effort to dump over has worked and only improved over tie. PS2? Perfect. Keep in mind some ps2 use the pressure sensitive face buttons like MGS though. 360? Pretty damn well now. You might actually want to run the mgs hd emulation on 360 because the controls are already fixed. Red Dead Redemption runs well. Dolphin? Flawless. Older? Well yes anything from PS1/N64 gen back just works. What's great is Steam Deck has third party software designed for it. Something like EmuDeck can set up all your emulators for you in one go with correct gamepad support and you barely have to have tune anything game by game. Some old PC games can be ran through third party software as well. And hardware wise. Screen is serviceable. The D-pad is decent, just a bit small. Played Ultra Street Fighter 4 to test it and the quarter circle is doable with my giant hands. Analog sticks put the vita to absolute shame. They aren't perfect but for a portable, they are fantastic and they are clickable. The back buttons needed to be worn in a bit. They were getting stuck at first. The more I used them the better the issue was resolved. Probably a manufacturing issue, buts its good now. Very good for Fallout 3 quick weapon select keys. Everything else is golden as well. Especially the trackpads. I used the right trackpad for precision in FPS games and some in Days Gone. Its no mouse, but it has no deadzone like an analog stick. The Deck is hefty and somewhat uncomfortable at first but that fades. Battery life is like 2 hours on anything PS4 gen forward. Not good at all. Most of the time you can do some tuning and get an extra 30 minutes without much compromise. PS2 emulation is like 4-6 hours. Some older PC games I tried are about 5. Battery is really the main bitch. It charges fast though and there is opion of plugging it in or using a battery bank. Definitely get a dock even if you don't plan on outputting to a TV. This allows for better mouse and keyboard support as well as easier file transfers when you're not on gaming mode. I say this because you can use this thing as a PC which means anything you want like Netflix/KZbin, offline videos through VLC, will work the same as using Linux. As well as having some ease of use while tinkering. Typing on keyboard is way faster than using the onscreen keyboard. Whether you intend to just use it as a gaming mode or not, you are still going to be in Desktop mode tinkering because of some issue or some mod you want to install. OVERALL 8/10. All the jank is mostly overridden by all the good. The areas where it can improve are more hardware strength on all components for longevity, less janky OS, better game compatibility going forward, a few missing OS features, way better battery, a bit more automation per game to make it more console like, and an OLED screen. All of which seem reasonable for a second Steam Deck 3 years from now and some of which are doable through software updates that Valve has been doing already. It's the best portable gaming device I've owned by a long shot. Hopefully we get another one down the line. I'd buy a comparable for the future technology version every 4 years. If they release another in 2025 that is at least a 3070 equivalent rather than a 1070 equivalent, that'd be a good pattern that keeps you able to play the new AAA games at minimum settings.

Matty, I'm always glad to see you and others still enjoying the Steam Deck, but it continues to be a total bane in my part of the world. Australia (where I am) and New Zealand still have no release date from Valve when or even if Australia/New Zealand is even ever going to get access to a Steam Deck. There are some people in Australia who do have them, but they've used redirect mail systems to get something from the US or had a friend in the US buy it andf send it over. Recently a few online retail companies have had limited access to selling Steam Decks, but because they're online retailers in Australia. If anything goes wrong with your Steam Deck, by getting hold of it in either way, there's warranty and service issues which won't neccessarily be covered. I know one of the online retail companies will cover service, but you have to seriously prove there's a fault. Sometimes I wish I was actually in the US, because I['ve found for years Australia gets the short end of the stick when it comes to consoles, pc hardware or even games, because for whatever reason Australia is not taken seriously as a gaming country. We are even excluded from most computer game competitions where there might be a figurine or a pc rig as first prize but Australia is always excluded as an entry country. What I do know is we might not have as high of a per capita of population % in Australia ratio that US/ Canada and Europe have, but our ratio is still very very big.

We still haven't had an official release here in Australia. It sucks because I would love one, but it's something I'd want official support for as well, which we won't get if we import it.

You are totally wrong with where xbox is heading. Xboxes future is to give players options which was said by Phil himself. The cloud won’t replace local gaming and it would be a horrible thing for everybody if it woul.

I went through all the Resident Evil remakes on my deck, I even finished RE7 which I never did on console, it handled RE4 remake like a champ. It's probably the best gaming device at the moment tbh, I actually play on it consistently as opposed to my consoles

The steam deck’s biggest advantage is the trackpads, I can’t tell you how much I miss the trackpads when I go over to my switch. I would like to see a newer version with liquid metal for better cooling, better support for Xbox Game Pass, Magnetic joysticks from GuliKit as stock became analog sucks. Maybe even a 1 TB storage version as SSD tech gets better and better

Bit late to this video but I’m looking at buying an Asus Rog Ally. Nearly picked up a Steam Deck in the last sale but this Ally device is native GamePass and more powerful. The display is better too, which is obviously one of the most important factors on a handheld.

with all the time most of us already spend on computers, in chairs, it really cant be understated just how much refreshing and more enjoyable it becomes when your gaming also isn't confined to that space. one reason I never cared to get into PC gaming or emulating.

Steam Deck has been my go to "lay in bed" or "lay in hammock" gaming device...until the new Zelda comes out lol. I've actually rebought a lot of games I had on Ps4/Ps5 and Xbox that I did not beat and knew I wouldnt beat playing on console (Persona 5, Witcher 3, Xcom 2, Divinity 2). Steam Deck is definitely a game changer. Best handheld of all time so far IMO. Ive even emulated some classics like symphony of the night and they play flawlessly.

It is kind of weird thinking about gamepass support.. The long term problem with Microsoft making a native gamepass/cloud option for steam deck is that whatever solution they were to make would become a Linux version. Although they would gain subscribers they would bolster the steamdeck as a platform. Without control of that platform there is nothing stopping valve adding commissions etc.

I genuinely love my deck it’s such a good piece of kit. Had mine for 3 months now and I been having a blast playing through some of my favourite series (mass effect, the Witcher, Hogwarts, Star Wars Jedi fallen order). Find myself playing games a lot more as it’s soo convenient to just chill on the sofa or in bed. Everything runs surprisingly well and if you’re not a frame rate snob (Ie everything’s has to be 60fps or higher) you can set most games to look stunning graphically and they’ll run at 30fps up (which is perfectly fine). Just started dipping my toes into emulation on the deck and playing some Pokémon games as they’re nice and casual and it’s been relatively easy to get to work. Three gripes I have with the steam deck. Battery, playing the Witcher 3 or Hogwarts legacy I’m smashing through the battery in a hour flat. A few games like cod or fifa won’t support it due to it being on Linux (I know you can install windows but seems a hassle) Offline gaming/gaming without a solid internet connection can be somewhat annoying as games can be temperamental starting up without a connection or mid playing they can crash because of an update that’ll stop you in your tracks.
