@mravg79 Жыл бұрын
Can you or someone explain the RPCS3, from what I heard this one was very resource greedy emulator and require a decent PC to run and even though it might run with some issues. How a handheld PC like Deck with limited power run it? While I never got to handheld gaming, I hope that lessons learned from Deck will allow valve to try again with more of custom build PC which can be used as console in the future (like steam machines v2.0)
@phantompainss

@@mravg79 I don't think i'm the right person to get into the technical specifics but you're right it's not an easy emulator to run. But there's a big community behind it with guides for almost every game to try and maximize performance and patches to increase performance. Like I mentioned i've only tried the two games but I intend on testing more. Hope that sorta helps!
@_n8thagr8_63

@@mravg79 it's not too terribly greedy nowadays. If you have a 7700k and a pascal series or higher (or AMD eqiuv) you'll be able to play anything, not at the bleeding edge, but you shouldn't have too many issues. So this is like 7 years old hardware at this point. The barrier to entry to good emulation isn't too terrible.

@wolokowoh0
@wolokowoh0 Жыл бұрын
That's only if you plan to play every new AAA game. Some are already not possible and some work. Its just who isn't trying to make the most demanding game while being the most poorly optimized. That's always going to happen if you buy a low end computer though. It took only two years after the GTX 960 came out before they started using it as the minimum requirement for games. By five years in it was the 1060 and a 960 wouldn't cut it on any AAA game. Now we are moving toward a 2060 minimum for most games so the 1060 has been mostly useless if AAA is all you care about. When the Steam Deck released there were already some games that wouldn't run. That is slowly growing but some devs are optimizing with it in mind and others are not. In a couple years, we will have a Deck 2. It just depends on whether or not you want to get another device in 2-4 years or wait it out and get a Deck 2 at launch.
@Patrick-y4d1z

Some games already do that, things like Starfield for example you could argue are unplayable. I guess that's where the Deck 2 comes in a couple of years from now.
@B_Machine
@B_Machine Жыл бұрын
Yeah... If it's too demanding, I just stream it from my Xbox. It's good at that with 5g wifi. The new deck has 6g, so even better. Now if we can just get game pass on it natively, that would be fantastic! In the handheld space, there's always going to be that performance trade off. The closer you get to that current gen quality, the higher the price. Perhaps before this generation ends, there will be a Steam Deck 2 out with near PS5 capabilities. Who knows what that'll cost though.

I think that a lot of the reason that Microsoft hasn't done anything to make Game Pass fully usable on Steam Deck is because they want you to buy a Windows based handheld instead. I enjoy my new oled deck but a hardware Complaint. Ok they used double sided tape to hold the ribbon cable against the heat shield. The one connecting the controler daughter boatd to the main board. That same strip also catches the cable for the speakers plug into the main board. So you have to unplug the ribon cable and the speaker cable then gently flip the shield to the side. Which the ribbon cable is fine. The speaker cable is like fighting a bermuse tiger. Ughhh, you will need tweezers full stop

The battery on it dies fast, too. As for the 3 weeks comment? Well, they had enough time to watch the rog and steam deck on the market for a while now to not make the same mistakes and to add improvements. Nintendo is the only company that always gets it right out the box. You are correct though about the efficiency, it is miles apart. If the PlayStation portable showed us anything, it’s that console players want this as well. Microsoft has to, not needs to, but has to imo, make their verison of PlayStation portable but having everything the portable didn’t have. Have Bluetooth, have internet access, let me link my Microsoft account to it so I can download my digital games that are on my account, have gamepass on it, let me download apps. I own the oled deck, OG deck and rog ally myself. I think the oled is amazing but it’s not perfect, the display does so much right but yet still to my eyes it’s letting me down in some games compared to the Ally, to the point I don’t want to play some games on the deck and it’s all down to the 800p resolution. For example playing cult of the lamb on deck is a horrible visual experience Because all the grass shimmers and looks nasty, compare that to the ally and it’s night and day better on ally. On the other hand playing a game like hollow knight on the deck oled in a dark room is a game changing experience, in a dark room you cant even see where the display begins and ends and the game image is floating in the air in front of you, it’s next level immersion. But yeh… that damn resolution in some games drags it back. The oled deck in every other way is amazing, battery life is on the verge of amazing. The hardware is excellent, efficiency great, software experience is above and beyond anything else in every way. It’s just such a good handheld experience man. But that damn resolution, I’m so sensitive to it.

@@jimmymac2292minimalist approach. Sure we all enjoy gaming in different ways some just like gadgets and new hardware. Some (like you) focus on what can it do and do I really need it. What matters is to enjoy gaming! The hardware we use imo does not matter that much. If the current Deck is meets your expectations great. Have a nice time gaming!

@@mravg79 I mean, my point about comparing devices was there isnt a performance upgrade. But I do agree about playing games and the level of enjoyment. I'm perfectly happy with mine

Those that bought the new Steam Deck OLED is in for a treat. Even those that already owns the LCD version won't feel as guilty upgrading to the OLED version once they see, hear, and feel all the improvements for themselves. For someone who own the previous 512GB flagship Steam Deck LCD... yea, this new Steam Deck OLED is that good! It is lighter, better controls, quieter, less heat, smoother gameplay, and of course... a much better screen thanks to it being OLED! 👍

It also depends what previous model you have and how long you have it. If you started day 1 with the 64gb model, then you probably used it a lot. Therefore its not upgrading a brand new hardware for you, but one that you have used a lot and besides the screen and all other upgrades, now you can go and get the 1tb builtin ssd oled model in example. As for the competition, one of the biggest flaws (besides using Windows) is they don't have trackpads. I don't want to use a handheld pc without trackpads ever again.

I would LOVE to see a review follow-up with a Windows 11 install on that device. Most people who buy a Steam Deck are interested in Game Pass as well, and there's no way to get that on Linux. I personally would never use the Steam Deck without my Epic Games and Game Pass launchers as well. People will complain about battery life but the difference is negligible.

Depends. OS is like 20gb with all the Proton and stuff. You can use software to increase how much of the SSD is reserved for OS so it can use it as RAM to get more stable performance. Game shader caches while they have shrunk in size can be GB per game on top of the game file size. Indies range from 400mb to 9gb. Blasphemous was less an 1 GB but Hollow Knight was 9gb. Your typical AAA is 40GB plus up to 300gb. If you are emulating anything pre - PS3 , those are 7gb and under down to 1MB files for oldies. You can transfer PC to Deck without using the internet so you can use your other PC as storage. If you have fast internet you can stream games to save space. There is also the microSD slot you can easily add another 512gb through. If you are a modder, 512 and replace the SSD with 2TB for cheaper than the price difference. With 512GB you might get 10 AAA games on there but you could easily get 100s depending on the games. 1TB will let you do more or load up some PS3 and later emulation. Super Mario Wonder is 3.5gb NSP file. Super Mario RPG is 6.7 GB. Red Dead Redemption(Switch) is around 11GB. I ripped these all with a hacked switch earlier to play on the Deck because I can but these are about the file sizes you can expect for any game on underpowered hardware. Compare that to Ace Combat 7's 50gb or Shadow of Mordor 70gb, its sequel 100+gb. I have 58 games on my OG Steam 256gb with a 512gb microSD with 180GB unused combined and with tird party software like a browser, video player, emulators, etc on Desktop mode. It is a mix of everything. Emulation, indies, older games like Bioshock, and Shadow of Mordor. Reasonably I'd say no more than 50 games if you are eclectic and less than 10 if you have some more recent AAA titles with 60gb+ sizes amost guaranteed.
