The transition has been mostly seamless but the community could definitely benefit from a comprehensive guide to gaming on Bazzite or linux more generally. Like from initial set up, automounting drives and making new steam libraries(unexpectedly tricky), to things like hardware tips like what components work well with linux or cpu/gpu/ram tuning or setting up an NVME raid game drive. An easier onboarding could really help open up the pipeline of PC gamers who are getting off windows 10 and don't necessarily appreciate windows 11.

I love how Ptyxis feels designed for easy distrobox use out of the box. If I could guarantee that audio bug wouldn't happen to anyone else I recommend it to, then it would be an *effortless* recommendation from me. And frankly, when my only complaint with a distro is "I had a few bugs with it (that might be fixed in the future)", that's extremely rare in my experience, because often times if I have a complaint, it's because of the core design of how the distro does stuff, which isn't the case here. Goes in B tier for now, but would be S tier if it was bugfixed a bit. I would switch back instantly if I could do so in a manner where nothing went wrong with it.

Tried a bit of both. In my opinion, Bazzite is a lot better because its desktop mode is way more powerfull, which also means you have more options setting up your HTPC. For example, I could simply make an web app of a KZbin for TV page and add it to gamemode in bazzite. Doing the same in Chimera OS was hell. Also, it is way easioer to make installed apps in bazzite gamemode while chimera OS only supports flatpaks, and that only using the plugins
@jaizon8 ай бұрын
Imo, it boils down to how much you need the desktop mode and how much you need stuff outside Steam. The gaming experience, on the other hand, was the same in both systems

Bluefin is from the same “collective” group, and is geared more towards “productive” tasks. It can also install Steam and does the same Nvidia magic. And you can rebase from Bazzite to Bluefin Aurora is the same as Bluefin but for KDE The stuff it does to make Nvidia “just work”, and does that better than anyone else is the killer feature for me. That is the main thing get makes Steam OS unviable outside of the Deck and whatever future Valve hardware. Also, there is a GUI to set up distro box instances (minimal versions of “normal” Linux installs.) so I have an Ubuntu setup and can install stuff with apt from my “base” terminal window (so no dropping into some other system like WSL…it’s perfectly seamless)

I daily Bazzite's sibling, Bluefin. It's great as a developer OS and for gaming. Everything works pretty much as expected as it would in Windows - except for those titles that are known not to work. There are still some similar quirks with it as you're seeing in Bazzite. As for Linux gaming - I've been working on some content creators lately on covering Linux more as an alternative for gaming. This is especially for the low budget gamers out there that are going to be up against it when Win 10 is sunset and Win 11 won't be an option. The prevailing opinion is "well, Linux is cool and all; but, you can't play Fortnite and CoD, and those are the only games that really matter to gamers." The reality is that there are way, WAY more games that do work on Linux than those that don't; however, since a few of the more popular titles won't work because the publishers are unwilling to enable support for Wine/Proton on Linux - it's not even considered as an alternative. Personally, I'm not going to stand for it, and will continue to evangelize Linux-based operating systems are solid alternatives to the mainstream - particularly for those with aging hardware that won't be able to move to Windows 11. The days of compromise are over for the Linux desktop, it's ready to be seen as a viable alternative. We just need more people with a larger reach to start showing how good it can be.

I only ever play games at the desktop now when it's something like Quake or some other FPS that requires me to have the highest framerate and least amount of latency, it's really nice.. the latency on it puts Steam's streaming service to shame, Im even using it right now to watch this video on my TV 🤣

Have you tried out cachyos? I tried both nobara and cachyos and I think they are both interesting in their ways
@MinaSchloch9 ай бұрын
CachyOS uses Arch and is probably interesting. Nobara uses a highly modified Fedora, and supports stuff like Resolve out of the box, but I would not run it when possible.

What's going to be really interesting is when the Strix APUs start trickling down to the miniPC makers. These will have 16 RDNA3.5 APUs (up from 12 RDNA3 that the 7840 has), and presumably AMD aren't making such large APUs without addressing the memory bandwidth limitations. A quad-channel Strix box would obviously cost more than a dual-channel 7840, but it's going to be a *much* more powerful device in very much the same form factor.

I’m using POPos and would switch to Bazzite but there are two issues in Bazzite I cannot seem to solve, I play Clone Hero and both Clone Hero and YARG on Bazzite crash on startup. Also I need to install xone in order to use my Rockband 4 guitar but I need DKMS in order to install it but every time I tried to install DMKS it fails. Right now both of these things are working correctly in POPos

Change the VRam to 8GB from the bios. It's not going to double your fps, but some games could benefit greatly from it

Use it as a main I wanna see what compromises there are to the desktop experience (if any).

I haven't had any issues using Proton Experimental layer in Steam for my games. I run any of my purchased games, whether it's for Linux or not, without any issues. Even AAA games like Red Dead Redemption 2. So I don't really see the need for this OS. How does this OS run the Windows games anyway? Doesn't it use Proton too?

How easy is the bazzite to update? Like nvidia driver update amd ryzen driver updates and system/kernel/dependencies/library updates

Try by enabling FSR on it.

I switched to Linux just after Christmas after using a steam deck for 3 months I decided to jump right in and not even keep my windows partition on my boot SSD, opting to wipe the whole thing and start fresh. I chose Kubuntu as it felt similar in layout to windows and it auto installed my driver's for my 3070ti and everything. I tweaked a couple settings but other than that every game I've launched on steam has worked perfectly, some in some cases it's even better than under windows in terms of FPS.

Would you recommand Bazzit over Nobara? I'm just curiose, because I will try both. (Tried Nobara already with happy and fustrated moments)
@zora_tech9 ай бұрын
Oh this is interesting for some reason I thought this was based on a Arch Linux and not fedora like the steam deck. That's why I went with Nobara which is made by Glorious egg roll who works on proton-ge. I am curious to see a comparison between the two. Also just out of curiosity does Bazzite fix the issue in game mode where the mouse stutters and jumps around? The other issue I have found for the steam deck and steam is is that when using the game mode you can not unlock it if you have the pin password unless you use a controller.

I believe HoloISO is based on Arch.

First attempt at installing Bazzite got me a "cannot load, locked root account" and not even an option to enter the root password I just set five minutes ago. Good grief. This is a big fail for the Distro.

I always wish for a SDDM for security reasons. It is fine not to have it but Steam GameMode is not really save and going to Desktop mode via TTY is possible too depending on the users password... and default user name

So how does this work with discord or trying to pull up KZbin while gaming? Is this exactly like the steam deck or can I minimize game mode? Pull up KZbin to like search how to do something in a game?

hate to be that guy, but whatever issue you have with Helldivers 2 is something with your arch install, it's gold on ProtonDB and is click and play for basically everyone. Using a heavily modified arch installation (which, yes I realize that implies the existance of a non-heavily modified arch installation) as any reference for general linux use isn't exactly reasonable. You must have made some change that is causing an issue because even the top result, right now, on ProtonDB for HD2 is "besides the reflections and borderless issues game runs perfect, performance is better than on windows 10 with same hardware and settings" And that post is about someone running it on Arch, with an intel A770 GPU, and a zen kernel, with the only launch options being "gamemoderun mangohud %command%", i.e. literally just mangohud and gamemode. (and, for the record, the game has those same sorta issues with borderless & reflections on windows, I should know, I've been playing it on my windows partition and it's a pain in the ass.)

i've done this to my steam deck, but sadly i actually LOST features, yeah i know sunshine is cool and all, but sometimes i dont want to make like 2837 ports just to stream my screen, but steam link makes solid black screens and stuff, and idk if it was just me but hdmi didnt work for me on my dock after i put bazzite on it

My dock does that with stock deck os. Usually unbluggin everything from the dock once or 2 fixes it. Mainly power cord. Always had it doing it.

8:17, Wootilty!! that would be so useful for me cause I have a few Wooting keyboards I use each day and setting them up requires messing with udev rules on Linux, luckily, the wootility download page has step by step guide, but its still an obstacle to new users if they are on Linux
