I think Frankfurt's U Bahn runs on broad gauge.
@IamTheHolypumpkin3 ай бұрын
@@seafighter4False-ish, Frankfurt is using 1435mm standard gauge but the interurban section to Oberursel and Bad Homburg which the U2 and U3 operate as a whole, and the U9 on parts of it, used to have a slightly wider gauge to prevent wear on the wheels. While I can not confirm it, I'm rather confident that over the years with track replacement and just more modern vehices the gauge should all be adjusted to be standard gauge by now.

The Harzbahn region is on my list for a visit!
@KyuQem3 ай бұрын
@@TFTSB Can recommend and on all Lines except the one to the Brocken the Deutschland ticket is even valid. i also recommend taking a visit to the rübeland bahn its the only line in germany using 25kv 50hz Electricity. Sadly on the rübelandbahn there is no passenger travel except some steam trains sometimes. But the Harz is always worht a visit for rail lovers. and if you want to see alot of old Formsignals i recommend visiting the Mühlenbahn Braunschweig-Wieren. its still running with Mechanic Signal Systems like 100years ago.
@roderickjoyce67163 ай бұрын
@@TFTSB I made my first ever visit to the Harz two weeks ago. Go. You will not be disappointed; although the trains on the Selketalbahn were suspended and the dreaded SEV (Schienenersatzverkehr) bus replacement service was in operation that week. I managed two trips from Wernigerode to the Brocken. The weather on the mountain can be very rough (and I live in the North of England) - on the first trip the cloud at the top was so thick I went straight back down, had lunch at Drei Annen Hohne and caught the next train to Eisfelder Talmühle. There were three steam-hauled trains in the station at the same time - a real rarity these days. On the second the wind nearly blew my head off, but the views were fantastic. the day after that, I caught the RB to Quedlinburg and the HSB to Alexisbad. The weather was much better and as it was a Saturday the up train was packed with local hikers. The downhill run was much quieter. I am already looking forward to my next visit. :)

I've lived in Darmstadt for ten years now. Never managed to even see the Feuriger Elias. Someday I have to plan for it and jump onboard :D As a sidenote: the stop Kongresszentrum is regularily only used by the airliner bus, but this one stops across the street as it only goes in the other direction. The stop for the Feurige Elias is only used when trams have to turn around early. For example because of constructions (which we have a lot in the last few years) or accidents further down the line.
@powgames3 ай бұрын
It's always special to see Feuriger Elias, i was on it as a kid and was amazing! I love to see that many people out there still enjoy it :DD Also, it's really not a problem that the Kongresszenturm stop isn't served on weekends, as there's hardly anything relevant around it anyway, theres no Uni and the next stop is just 150m away ^^ All lines that don't run on weekends are overlapping on weekdays so that every station (except Kongresszentrum :D) always has service to the city center. E.g. line 9 and 5 both run to Böllenfalltor and they add up to a 10 min frequency (20+20). On Saturdays, line 5 doesn't run, but line 9 switches to a 10 min frequency on its own. All that is lost are some direct interconnections between districts that are easily replaced by one change at the city center with hardly any time loss. And on Sundays, line 9 runs every 15 minutes, as there is no commuter traffic :)

Refilling the coal bunkers with buckets was a thing on the fullsize railway at certain times and places, I'm told... like, most places had labour-saving infrastructure but an unlucky/inexpert loco crew could find themselves called short somewhere inconvenient and refilling the bunkers by hand

I used to volunteer at a standard gauge heritage line and this is how we did it.. shovel coal into big buckets (we lifted them with two people), lift them onto the cab floor then pour them out into the bunker. It does take a lot of time though, not suitable for a busy railroad...

In Barmouth, and Porthmadog, Wales (UK), trains (regular DMU passenger services) also must stop to red light, before road crossing. Train driver after stop the train, must request to permission to cross road by pressing button, and wait for barriers go down and permission white light. This is due to retrofitting old "manual gates" crossing, but without paying wage of crossing guard.

Germany has a lot of narrow guage steam trains in revenue service - the Mollibahn, Rasender Roland, the Harz system (totalling 140km), and the three lines run by the Sächsischen Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft (Saxon Steam Railway Company). The trains run all year round; some of the locos are new builds, two lines in Dresden are included in the local public transport network ...
