Bluegrass is the Country version of folk music. Born in the Appalachian Mountains from English, Irish, and Scots immigrants with the instruments being fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and upright bass. It was called old timey music, with Americans from other regions calling it Hillbilly music. It turned in the 1930's with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys ( getting their name from Kentucky bluegrass, the native grass).

This is my favorite Steel Drivers song. Very talented bluegrass band. You are starting to see why all music is important in its own way. My playlist basically is Apple Music. I can’t categorize my taste because it cover so many genres. Bluegrass is down home folk music that ranges from The Carolinas to Kentucky Tennessee Georgia Mississippi Louisiana and Texas. It’s grown over the years and can be heard in every state. Always tells a story. Now you have a vast rabbit hole to explore. Enjoy 👍👍👍

The story goes that Adele was touring America and her bus driver was playing this and she was like "What the Hell is this?", and made him keep playing it. She fell for the song so hard that she recorded it on her live at Albert Hall album which was released in England. Love your reactions buddy. It's fun to see someone else hear these wonderful songs for the first time. It's especially interesting to see someone who would never previously be exposed to it otherwise. Keep up the great work. You should give Jason Isbell a try. The song "Elephant" or "If We Were Vampires" a listen. He may be the greatest song writer on the planet.

Jamel, Blue Grass beginning roots are Scotch-Irish.... Most early (late 1700s-early 1800s) Scotch-Irish immigrants settled in the southeastern U.S. Many in Virginia/Kentucky/Tennessee/Georgia/West Virginia....Their stock and trade was mining (mainly coal) and timber...so many were the first white settlers in the Appalachian mountain ranges where coal and timber were plentiful....they were hard working mountain people... I was raised in the Appalachian mountains in Tennessee and know many of their great-great-great-great grandchildren who kept their heritage alive through their music.

Love my bluegrass! Mountain music and a gift to us from Bill Monroe! To those of us lovers of bluegrass music, Telluride in Colorado is Home and the place where the country’s greatest bluegrass festival takes place. Thousands of people show up in Telluride every year to enjoy the country’s best bluegrass legends and bands for four days. It’s absolutely unbelievable, and the level of talent is off the charts. Some of the greats we love to go to watch every year, are Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, and of course, Alison Krause and Union Station among many others. I hope you’ll get to go one day, Jamal!

BlueGrass by in large had its roots in Scotch/Irish mountain people in the SouthEast. A lot of the music came from slave like conditions of the irish work camps whether building the sears tower or roads and bridges in lousiana. If you listen to words and the stories in the music, you will hear the similiar themes between this music and negro spirituals that were written in the midst of hardships. Some of the best music comes from pain and thankfully we can still experience the music and it still speaks to us. Thank you for the reviews you do.

Agree with this, though the direct African influence is important to note as well. The banjo is one of the main keys to Bluegrass and was an African instrument. The 5th string was added to it by the Scotch-Irish folk of Appalachia to bring in a drone sound much like the bagpipes. There is really little difference in traditional bluegrass and Mississippi blues aside from the scale of the music. Traditional blues was based on the "Slave Scale" while bluegrass was based more on a major pentatonic scale. Bluegrass was created by the Scotch-Irish working and living alongside slaves and is an important, although often overlooked, part of our country's history. Glad to see you review this. The Steeldrivers are a good intro into Bluegrass - you can get as deep as you want to with it. Going a little further back, Doc Watson is a great blend of Bluegrass and Blues.

Love your reaction!!! Remember country music is story telling at its finest. It may not be the story of the one writing the song, but a story handed down through generations. Blue grass music is composed of all stringed instruments and came to us thru the struggles and experiences of folks who lived in the south and mountain areas. Many of these talented musicians were self taught and were handed down to the next generation who learned to play by watching. The harmonies and instruments were intertwined and came from the soul. There were also "clog dances" that were born from thus music as people who listened were inclined to get up and dance. Pull up clog dancers on You Tube. It is amazing. My grandpa and his southern ancestors were all old time fiddle players!

From Wikipedia: Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the United States Appalachian region. The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Bluegrass has roots in traditional English, Irish, and Scottish ballads and dance tunes, and by traditional African-American blues and jazz.[1] The Blue Grass Boys played a Mountain Music style that Bill learned in Asheville, North Carolina from bands like Wade Mainer's and other popular acts on radio station WWNC.[2] It was further developed by musicians who played with him, including 5-string banjo player Earl Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt. Bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe characterized the genre as: "Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin'. It's Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It's blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound."[3] Bluegrass features acoustic string instruments and emphasizes the off-beat. Notes are anticipated, in contrast to laid back blues where notes are behind the beat, which creates the higher energy characteristic of bluegrass.[1]In bluegrass, as in some forms of jazz, one or more instruments each takes its turn playing the melody and improvising around it, while the others perform accompaniment; this is especially typified in tunes called breakdowns.[4] This is in contrast to old-time music, in which all instruments play the melody together or one instrument carries the lead throughout while the others provide accompaniment.[4] Breakdowns are often characterized by rapid tempos and unusual instrumental dexterity and sometimes by complex chord changes.[5] There are three major subgenres of bluegrass. Traditional bluegrass has musicians playing folk songs, tunes with traditional chord progressions, and using only acoustic instruments, with an example being Bill Monroe. Progressive bluegrass groups may use electric instruments and import songs from other genres, particularly rock & roll. Examples include Punch Brothers, Cadillac Sky and Bearfoot. Another subgenre, bluegrass gospel, uses Christian lyrics, soulful three- or four-part harmony singing, and sometimes the playing of instrumentals. A newer development in the bluegrass world is Neo-traditional bluegrass; exemplified by bands such as The Grascalsand Mountain Heart; bands from this subgenre typically have more than one lead singer. Bluegrass music has attracted a diverse following worldwide.

Bluegrass music is a combination of the music from Ireland which is where a lot of the white folks immigrated from years ago, with some of the African music that was brought over by slaves. It ended up as very “country” sounding music with rhythm. especially with banjo. Also the instruments are all acoustic so you have to be a fantastic musician to play it. There’s no distortion or volume to cover up your mistakes. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a great African American band to get a feel for the African influence. For something with a little bit of Mississippi blues tossed in, try Doc Watson. He was blind and played guitar in a flat pick style. It’s incredible to see how much talent he had.

You must know this history. They were officially free but the war wasn't over. If they tried to leave their plantations, they were hunted down & murdered. If they ran & could make it to "the freedom line of Lincoln soldiers, they were safe. Many, many died trying.

Richard Nolan new grass is a term that has been around for a long time. It has evolved as bands evolve, back in the day bands like Doyle Lawson and quicksilver (they have the best harmony in the business) and the lonesome river band were, by most, considered new grass or progressive, then it was maybe Alison Krauss and union station and Ricky Skaggs and many more, but by today’s standards all those are considered fairly traditional. Today the progressive or new grass bands are bands like greensky bluegrass, trampled with turtles, the steeldrivers, punch brothers and many, many more. I’d recommend just jump into all of it. Some of the traditional stuff is absolutely great as is some of the new stuff.

Did you get your Bluegrass explanation? I'll give you a summary. Must be pro musicians who can give a more technical explanation. Bluegrass is associated with the southeast US, Kentucky and surrounding region. Lots of mandolin and harmonies. Personally I like it but in moderation. It can get pretty repetitive. Some big names are Alison Krause, Flatt & Skruggs, Ricky Skaggs is bigtime, and a bunch of others. Lots of good storytelling. And a fiddle is just a violin when it's played in the South. Look at Charlie Daniels Band for good fiddelin' (Devil Went Down to Georgia).
