I first heard this song after my dad was diagnosed with cancer. He always seemed as though he was immortal to me never showed his age and always was so active. After he started treatment his immortality was lost and he slowly suffered till the cancer took him at the end of June. This song makes me think of him how at one time he could out hike me trekking through the mountains only to watch that horrid disease destroy him.

I just lost my father-in-law at the age of 91. He was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge and if it wasn't for bad weather, he would have landed in Normandy on D-Day. Luck was with him and he landed on the second day. If he could sing, these lyrics would have come from his lips. He would always say that the young folks at family gatherings "paid him no mind." I'm not so young so we had a good relationship. I miss you Bill and every time I hear this song I think of you.

This reminds me of my late grandpaw. He spent his whole life in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He had a pretty rough go with cancer in his final days, but he told me lots of stories about all the places he explored and things he did as a kid in the 40s. Cherish every moment you have with him because the moments don't last long. My dad was 62 when he passed away in 2022. He was a stubborn man but always put on like he was ok, my recollection is he was healthy enough one moment, a week later he is hospitalized, 3 days after he was discharged he passed away in hospice. None of my family know what exactly happened to him, when he got sick he presented common signs of a cold. Then it progressed rapidly, damn sickness took his mind with it. He was in the hospital for a week, during that time he was non communitive and what he did say rarely made since. He had one day where he had full clarity though, it gave us all a little hope. That was the day the Dr got to finally speak to him, the Dr told him that he was dying and there wasn't anything more that could be done. my dad shrugged it off like he was saying up yours, I'm alive and I'm not going to die right now. He was back to his old self. My dad hated hospitals and wanted to go home. The Dr told him that they could keep him in the hospital and he might have a couple weeks left, or they could send him home and a week would be a long time, he was already septic at this point. My dad didn't believe a word of it and chose to go home on hospice care. The last thing I said to him on that one day he had his mind back was I told him to promise me that no matter what, when I see him again the next morning he had to have his mind still. He promised, I cleaned like mad, I mowed the yard, i picked up any and everything he had been on to me to clean. Mom mom pulls up to the house with him, I was so excited to see him, I wanted to hear praise by him over how nice everything looked. His mind was gone though, the once strong man I knew, admired, loved, he was there in flesh but not in mind. He passed away three days later, I helped the herse people carry him out of my house, I couldn't bare the thought of strangers taking him away from his house. No one in my family was in any position to help, they were all beside themselves. I was to, but I had to do it. I had to be the one to send him off. What you don't know about me is I loved my dad, I loved him more than anything in this world, I tried to bargain my soul just to keep him on this earth with me. I've been so close to ending it myself since he passed that it's scary, I push through though, my family needs me to. Why did I tell you and everyone here my story, to get you to call your dad, hug him, love him, cherish him. I've not known peace since my dad passed and I've constantly prayed to join him sooner or later. Just love your dad. Thank for listening

Keri Ann ...although I love songs in this genre, somehow I had missed this beauty..it was at one of my best friends funeral that I first heard it..it was the last song of 3 that my good friend Tim Ledbetter requested to be played at his services..and I broke down and crumbled midway thru this song as the words were hitting so true to my friend..his life..and both our lives as they intertwined...my friend died on July 3rd coming 3 years ago... at the age of 53 my friend had endured not one but 3 kidney transplants starting at age 19...and had probably ten years of dyalisis added in as well..and suffered in addition to years of medical hell as byproduct ailments caused by all the medications one must take to survive that haulacaust....and tonight as I set here on the night of my 50th birthday halfway thru a bottle of blantons..i have thought a lot of this song tonight which bring me here once again...merle haggard once asked the question "are the good times really over for good"...but this song says it best...tim sure had some ruff patches threw his life, more than I will ever see or could have endured..but my we both sure had some good times too...like the songs verse that broke me down to tears says..."But in my days I sure was something, before I felt the heavy hand of time..." and as I start my downhill plunge tommorrow, I am sure glad I had some good days in the sun, and more than most get to experience at that...godspeed and rest in peace tim...and as my bottle nears the bottom, so does the remaining days of this life, in this life...

As a 30 something Veteran of two wars four times I feel every cord of this song. After seeing so many good men and friends die I know they've made it to the otherside where rainbows never die. Lost my grandpa this past feburuary shortly before his birthday to brain cancer. He was a constant in my life for so long and was the only living grandparent ive have for the last 8 or so years. Sobbed like a baby at his funeral when this song played. I will miss him all the time. Sometimes I can liaten to this song and sing along and other times I get so choked up all I can do is cry.

Waste away the Sun sets..." does not sound correct. "...the other side. West of where the sun sets." Is his intention. The "other side" he is describing is the side "West of where the sun sets". So he's going more west than west, is what he's implying. Out of this world and into another. It's a similar metaphor that one sees when looking at "Stairway to Heaven": "A feeling I get when I look to the West".2). and sunsets is a noun, but within the song he is using "sets" as a verb and "Sun" as a noun: "West of where the Sun sets" is the correct usage, and the line to follow is a continuing of the statement "where rainbows never die". to say "...waste away..." would not be fulfilling of his previous line.3). Above all else it sounds like "West" and not "Waste".

I lost my Daddy one month ago today and I'm more of a rock and roll kinda guy. I stumbled across this tune and it hit me like a ton of bricks. What powerful lyrics and melody too, very moving and meaningful. On the morning he died, my brother sent me a picture of a beautiful rainbow right in front of him. My brother just passed a week before Christmas 2016 he was 38 and I was unaware of this song by the SteelDrivers and it's an AMAZING SONG.
