The reason the hands come together is due to him turning his feet after releasing his shot. His feet are not pointed at the basket, they are actually turned roughly 30 degrees to the left. By turning his feet, he is allowing his shooting arm to maintain perfect middle alignment with the middle of the hoop. Turning his feet turns his shoulders which lengthens his right arm compared to his left. The natural movement for his off hand is to touch his right shooting wrist.

I also do this , the added spin and power really helps when shooting from deep and makes shots more effortless. That said , it is more of a habit from a young age than a science , I'd recommend just sticking to your natural jumper and only making small changes .

He raises the ball to his setpoint with his palm at the side so he has to rotate the ball right before snapping his wrists. The rotation adds additional power to his shot but makes the ball spin side-ways. He has to flick the ball with his left thumb to counter the side spin to ensure his shot goes straight explaining the weird positioning of his hands after making a shot

I have used a thumb flick for decades, and have subconsciously recognized the value of a lower set point. The big AHHA moment for me here is the angle of feet and body relative to the basket. I was a free-throw champion in the 90s, and was coached to be squared up in a set shot, so I will have to see how this change in angle affects my shot and range. Really great analysis, Scotshot. I like the counteraction because in order for a counter of an action to work correctly, they both must be clashing at the same force toword the same point, the basket. It essentially does correct the alignment of the shot compared to a stiff left where the shooting arm may shift without correction.

I also noticed something kind of odd, when he shoots, instead of keeping his elbow in a perfect line with his body while going up, or staying somewhat level his elbow kind of points a little bit outwards, then comes very far inwards, as you can see this from the back angle. From the front angle the ball makes a C shape across his body, ultimately ending with it lined up with his eye. It seems like this relieves shoulder tension.
@ScotShotBasketball6 жыл бұрын

Nice analysis 👍 I do the same thing. I think it also helps to be more consistent because there's a beginning and finishing shooting position where you're arms cross or touch. That way it's easier for the body's muscle memory to get the middle and even the smoothness of the shot consistent.

And object in motion stays in motion. You can see how much force he's using with his left hand. The thumb flick has a certain amount of force that reverberates in his arm his left hand looks like it intentionally goes over the top of his right forearm. It's a reflex.

Curry, Reggie miller, ray Allen, kyrie Irving just to name a few... all of them use their left thumb to shoot the ball. Only because it is balance and the old shooting teaches you to line your shoulder up and your elbow the rim as you hold the ball before you shoot like a sniper would do before he pulled the trigger on his gun
@ideasarepowerful-mickdemi94246 жыл бұрын
In physics, I believe that /\ is technically straighter than |. In other words if you have a forward left motion and forward right motion of equal power, it should produce a straight line forward more often than a forward motion would. When sending something forward, a simple wind or even the air pressure from the spirals in the ball can move the ball to the side. But when you shoot both forward left and forward right simultaneously, I believe that the outside air resistance is even less. So you can balance 50/50 of left right motion, or you can balance 90/10 by applying 90% right with 10 power = 9, and 10% left with 90 power = 9. So Steph's left hand may be pushing the ball right, but because his off hand flick isn't driving as much force as his right hand is, he needs to counteract less left motion from his right hand. Steph is doing a bit of a 95/5 balance motion here. He's either doing 100% straight, or he's doing a bit of a 95/5 forward left right motion here as you suggest. I think there's a good chance he's applying /\ motion, and it's possible that players should be applying even more. Although figuring out how to balance that perfectly is so impossible that almost no one would ever even attempt it, which could be why we're seeing Steph be the only one who is trying it.
@poorboi80936 жыл бұрын
Also there is no energy gap from ur lags to ur hands when shooting like /\ but there is when Shooting straight, since the right hand can't fully control all that motion from it's feet to the right hand, I've noticed then when shooting without a ball for example a free throw, when both my hands touch each other and I get momentum from my feet and onto my hands it's so effortless and I can pick up on the energy and my hands are straight without even trying or thinking, while I tried just with my Right Hand, but it felt so off.

However this makes allot of sense, a One Motion is basically u transfer ur energy from ur feet to the ball, so that energy transferred in just ur right hand is too much, but if u add that slight push of the left hand then that energy is perfectly released.

Excellent video, Thanks. I'm wondering if the pressure of his two hands coming together helps stabilize his shot. for instance we know having off hand thumb usually is awful if you don't have millions of reps with it already. But, without the thumb maybe the the squeezing pressure of the two hands coming together, stabilizes the shot and makes it consistent for him when since he shoots from so many difficult positions. IDK, just a theory it also could be a fault that he's masked with sheer volume and repetition.

Great observation though the opposing forces your pointing out in Stephs shot applies to anyone, our body will naturally generate an opposing forces to counter the force from catching a basketball and redirect forces to result in the ball going up and towards the hoops. This applies to Klays shot too, the opposing for his shot just occurs at a different moment so that he's able to line up his shot too.

Another possible reason for Curry's post shot arm movements might be to stabilize his arms and brace for getting hit by defenders. Curry gets hit on his hands after most of his jump shot attempts. So, he might have built bracing for hits by defender's into his form. I know this theory is a stretch, but it might have something to do with his form. It's frustrating that he doesn't get more fouls called for him, but I guess referees feel sorry for the other teams.
