In July 2008, Bartman was offered $25,000 to autograph a picture of himself at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, but he refused the offer. He declined to appear as a VIP at Wrigley Field. In 2011, eight years after the incident, he declined to appear in an ESPN documentary, and he declined a six-figure offer to appear in a Super Bowl commercial. These people ruined his life and no amount of money could fix that.

I agree that it is a natural reaction to go for a foul ball, but he did reach over the railing to try and catch it.. and as a Cubs fan he did something that took away an out from the Cubs. It is what it is. But to say that you never understood why people were mad at him? C'mon man... the Cubs have a nasty curse on them and Bartman only made it worse.. that is why people were pissed. The Cubs had a very talented squad that year and boy.. you could just sense the air being taken out of wrigley field when that happened. The Cubs started to make mistakes after that play, and the Marlins became relentless. I feel bad for Bartman, but unfortunately, he did influence that game.

I was there that night when it happened. I was about 10 rows back on the first base line, and we had no clue what happened. I remember leaving my husband to go up and look at the replay monitors. I came back and said, “Its potentially fan interference, but they played it in slow motion, and I don’t think that’s going to stick.” The thing people don’t talk about is the next play where an easy grounder goes through Gonzo’s legs. That would have ended the inning, and he is the professional being paid millions to play baseball.

And Dusty Baker pulling Mark Prior off the mound!! Instead of a time out delay and going to him so Mark could refocus? I'm a lifelong White Sox fan and I saw the whole game on TV. The worst part is that 1. The ball was falling behind the catcher's glove with no hands on it. We all know how this cubs team treated the ball when they didn't have their hands on it. and 2. Bartman did not cause the next 8 lost runs. Dusty Baker did.

To me it's not about whether or not Bartman should be blamed, or if Alou shouldn't have been so furious about it. It's really about the reaction by Cubs fans who were legitimately pissed about this for YEARS, and many still are. The guy had to be put under police protection for Christ's sake! Any fans that get that mad over an ambiguous incident such as this one in my opinion deserve the worst luck and no championships, while I laugh at their madness.

I find it pretty telling that the guy right next to him was reaching for the ball as well. Either 2 people who have the very rare trait of being awful enough to try and catch the ball were coincidentally sitting right next to each other, right where the ball happened or end up OR instinctively trying to catch the ball is not an awful trait and rather a perfectly normal reaction.

Cubs fans are stupid the way they treated and villainized Bartman. Never mind the other people reaching out to snag the ball, as if he was the only one while everyone else pulled back to “preserve the out”. Never mind the face they blew a three run lead by surrendering 8 runs in the eight and then went on to blow game seven. Never mind the lawyer who ultimately got the ball and sold it for profit while Bartman has declined every financial opportunity. But yeah … he was the evil one. To throw debris and beer at him and offer death threats, my God people, it’s a game. They should have gone after pathetic ownership and front office personable that allowed a franchise to be so incompetent for so long.

@SO-jp6gh
@SO-jp6gh 2 жыл бұрын
@@doubled7080 The big difference is the savvy young Yankee fan was clever enough to do something that HELPED his home team win, whereas Bartman (and others) were oblivious to the actual game itself, thus didn't realize that they were preventing their OWN team from getting out of that inning. People usually forgive physical errors but are less sympathetic about mental errors. That being said, people should realize that not all fans have good knowledge of the game. Some fans probably did not realize that if your team catches a ball in the stands, it counts as an out. Bartman probably never played little league ball. Its not like Bartman is the only guy reaching, he just happened to be the guy who's hands hit the ball and fucked up. Sure it was a dumb mistake on Bartman's part but we all know that if a ball is within arms reach of us like that, for most people its like natural instinct to reach for the ball so I think its pretty stupid and unfair to Bartman that he's gotta hide the rest of us his life.
