Thank u for posting this priceless stuff, Though i pride myself as some one who seeks out guitarists, bands etc.... that never became mainstream, double platinum, etc..... I must admit I missed these guys, barely heard of S,H Steve can compete with any of the prog cats back then, and that's saying a lot. Just amazing stuff. Salmon song solo is always epic.

Just rediscovered this. Proud to say that I worked with Andy Anderson (also John and Dave) in a couple of bands. JIMMY PURSEY, would you believe? A great drummer, beautiful human being and a dear friend. We spoke on the telephone a few times when he knew that he was dying of cancer; so much joy and laughter, reminiscing. In a world full of faux 'role models', Andy is mine.

Magnificent - can't wait to see The Return of Hillage at Night of the Prog in July. Side note: Miquette Giraudy is amazing - "younger" listeners may not realise that *none* of those synth sounds were pre-programmed - she was playing on the fly. Utter brilliance.

Steve's music is great and he's a very fine guitarist but there is more to his music than just the surface, having studied the science of Cymatics, the use of sound vibration that can affect matter, I realise sound can alter our conciousness and when I listen to much of Steve's work over the year's it 'upgrades' my noodle to what is and can be, basically his music comes from a spiritual dimension, I'm sounding like a right fucking hippy I know, but I mean it maaann! Music or sound can open our mind's and Steve has that power, I love System 7 and that vibration has the same affect. Steve and Miquette are a sonic master team. People of a conspiracy nature talk of the Illuminati these day's but to my knowledge Steve was the first one to mention them ib musical form, this man was so way ahead.. I've been listening to him since 77 and I was a punk then but his music always affected me in a positive way. His music isn't just 'Entertainment' it's food for the soul.

In 1979 I recorded this off the radio in Australia (it was broadcast on 2ABC-FM) and since then it's been my favourite Hillage concert. What a fantastic rhythm section and Steve was in great form on the night. Only shame is that the TV show didn't include the encore. They played Crystal City followed by an absolutely shredding version of The Glorious Om Riff. As Steve said after that ended, "Thank you very much for coming and all...if only for that!".

This takes me back to some very pleasant times. Steve Hillage at the Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, London and at the Glastonbury Festival. Last band on Saturday night at Glastonbury, if memory serves. When assembling older formats into new media not all choices are artistic. There are time limitations that have to be considered, and many times the compromise is leaving off one or more tracks, or editing longer tracks down (often omitting your favorite solo, or your favorite verse.) Artistically, It was probably a wiser choice to preserve every note rather than practice some form of heinous butchery.

As someone who was blown away by this tour when it hit Cardiff (and Steve was clearly under the influence that night!) and has treasured their copy of Live Herald ever since I find it amazing that 35 years later and I am blown away again! What a hidden gem!! Thanks SO much for posting this....an unexpected trip down memory lane.

My brother was at Cardiff uni at this time and was involved with putting on this gig. Some lightning rig collapsed and Miquette hurt her back, and my brother took her to hospital. He had to get Andy Anderson a fan also as he got hot playing drums. Steve had a Volvo estate at the time that didn't impress my brother.
@haeuptlingaberja49272 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was and remains a very special album, with its genius live and studio mutually-affirming "sides." Other bands have done it, of course, but only Live Herald and Night of the Living Dregs by the Dixie Dregs (also released in 1979) have done it right.
@spirit39710 жыл бұрын
my gosh, was trawling thru u tube when I came across this, I was actually at this GIG, followed steve all over, even went to Glastonbury revival in 77 I think. the only time I saw angry LOL when they pulled the plug halfway thru his set because they had gone over the max time allowed.

ian vincent That was Glastonbury Fayre June 1979, Steve was Saturday headliner, overran the midnight noise curfew and had to stop. People watched Steve's band rehearsing in Michael Eavis's barn next to his farmhouse the day before. No segregation at all, just free to wander in and listen. Glastonbury was a very different experience back then. Tim Blake headlined on the Sunday.
