Smart! 🤔😋 This is the whole reason why I don't have a saltwater reef tank. If the power goes out you're down possibly tens of thousands of dollars once the temperature drops even 7 degrees. At least with fresh water the echo system isn't nearly as delicate.

I live in GA and we live in a very secured place. We already used our generator ($700) made sure it was seasoned. We also have snakes and frozen rats. Which are very expensive for 10 snakes ($300 6 month worth). We cannot afford to NOT have a generator. We have a community tank of fish. In Texas, and some KZbinrs, their snakes died because it got too cold, the electricity didn't come on fast and some people don't have a chimney. So I also worried. The moment the lights went out. My husband and I hooked up the generator and it was the most secured feeling I felt. I wasn't worried, scared, or panicked. The piece of mind is ALWAYS WORTH IT! 👌🏻

It is such a comforting feeling to be prepared. Here in WI we are pretty lucky but bad storms do find their way here sometimes. My husband just installed some type of outlet in the garage that comes into the basement wall. The generator in the garage plugs into it and then in the house an extention cord can be run to the basement, the furnace, and yes, multiple aquariums:) We are trying to be prepared. I feel so bad for so many who lost everything from this last hurricane:( 😞 😪. Glad you are all OK. My husband & I really enjoyed meeting you at Aquashella Chicago. We had a really good time. I was the 'stalker' on the escalator as you and Jason were on your way down. You were both so awesome to stop and chat with us! It sure made my weekend:) Thank you!!

@@pkendlers yes, nor easters too, fiona was the worst we ever had. Before that I had no worries. This time I'm preparing, looking into generators, battery operated air pumps and air activated shipping warmers to keep the fishes warm and alive. I only had candles and a BBQ lighter. All of the gas was sold out for days in cape breton, all of the camping supplies and camp stoves and fuel for them were sold out. It was crazy here. I'll be more prepared for next time. Hurricane season runs through November 1st.

Being prepared and having everything you need always stops me stressing and worrying about these things. As we all know having a lot of tanks can be stressful but rewarding when you look back and see what you’ve created. I’m glad Ian and the hurricane didn’t have too much of an impact. I spent the whole day doing maintenance today. This hobby is a beautiful thing but can hard work too

Great video. I can’t count the number of tanks of guppies we lost in the storms of ‘67-78 in Gloucester, MA. When the power went out, no power for a week. We heated the house with two fireplaces and a wood stove. We owned 28 acres of woodland, so keeping warm wasn’t a problem. Those blowdowns were fuel. Our poor fish 😭

Late to the party, but as a floridian, seeing the panic buying that always happens a day or 2 before a hurricane always reminds me how important it is to be prepared before there is ever a threat. I think everyone else in the US felt something similar during Covid lock downs. (Toilet paper anyone?). This is such a great tip. No such thing as over preparedness!

I moved from a NYC neighborhood that never had a power outage since the Northeast Blackout of 2003, to a town in Washington whose power goes out for 1-2 hours everytime it gets windy. I have a battery-powered air pump for my tank- I had gotten that pump originally when preparing to relocate my fish across the US just in case there were any hiccups on the move. It turned out that Tacoma's power supply company doesn't work on weekends when I moved (whereas NYC's is 24/7) and I had to stay with a friend until Monday. Drop fish in a 5 gallon container, connect battery air pump and all was good! I haven't needed the pump since, but it feels so good to have it! I definitely need to save up for a generator. I don't think they would help when you live in wildfire territory but who knows what kind of surprises mother nature will have for this country in the coming years!

You should look into a standby generator that can be serviced by a local company. With your fish house it will be a Valuable investment. The power goes out and the generator comes on automatically

I had to go to work for the storm (essential position) and was there for about 24 hours. To prepare I set up and had the battery operated air pumps already going to my sponge filters in the small tanks before I left, just in case we lost power during that time I wouldn't have to worry about my fish as much. My big tank I have both a canister and sponge filter. We can hook up the big tank canister filter to the generator, but not knowing when I'd get home to do that, have to rely on the battery air pumps in the meantime.

I've lived in my house for 30+ years and only had one incident of a 24 hour outage (during Sandy). However last year the power was out across the street for several days (my house was fine) but it did prompt me to get a generator. Although it's just been sitting, it is a good feeling to have one. I do suggest others not be like me, though. I've broken it in (that's important if you want it to be in good condition when you need it) but have never done a real dry run: unplug everything, ensure you have gas and all the right extension cords, handy - because it could happen at night when it's almost impossible to see; you want everything ready and easily accessible during the day. Then test it out; see how long it can run on one tank of gas - so you can be sure to have enough gas on hand for several days, so you don't have to drive hours to get gas when you need it. So glad you didn't need it!
@divinelotus192 жыл бұрын
Break it out and use it every 6 months at least. Keeps the gasoline fresh.
@nyteflyer50162 жыл бұрын
As a Florida resident with experience in the power being out for a week you must also consider how you will fuel your generators. How long will they run under load with one tank of gas, it may be several days before you can get gasoline, I saw a propane tank on your property, you might want to consider propane generators.

Have yet to watch the video so it should be interesting to see how you plan for so many tanks but yeah about Ian...I live in Cape Coral and our power was out for 10 days (just got it back yesterday) and even though I only have one 36 gallon tank it stressed me pretty bad worrying about my fish (albino cories). Thankfully except for one mystery snail casualty every other life in my tank survived. Before the storm I got a second petbank brand battery backup airpump you charge via a USB, so throughout the outage I swapped em back and forth having one in use while the other would be charging however I could get a charge. Early on when no one else in my family actually had power I had to rely on the couple family members that had generators to keep the other air pump charged. So that along with copious use of seachem prime to keep the ammonia as under control as best I can is how I got them through. Made sure to manually take out water and re-add it for extra oxygen whenever I added prime too because it supposedly depletes oxygen the more it's dosed. Also helped that corydoras can gulp air from the surface so they're more forgiving then many other fish would be. Oh and of course I did water changes when we got water back 5 days in, was kinda risky tbh cause of the potential for water quality being bad but it wasn't practical to use tons of jugs of gallon water, which ofc would be significantly different parameter wise to Florida tap.

+Glad to hear you made it through Ian. I grew up in Fort Myers and still have a lot of friends in the area. A few that were at the beach lost everything but most came through ok with only a little damage. Worst storm I ever went through was Donna back in 1960. Ian must have been 10 times worse. I'm up in Homosassa now, about 80 miles north of Tampa and all we got was a little rain. Thank God for that as I have 5 tanks and no generator. Have to go and get one now as these storms are getting worse all the time.

Cannot agree with you more. Not only are generators a life saver, but do not forget to get plenty of heavy gauge extension cords and power strips and store them with your generator(s). We live in a rural area of Virginia and we can have occassional power outages due to weather. Our last outage was not weather related but pre-planned electric company maintenance related. We had the plan and were ready to hook everything up and the tanks didn't miss a beat.

I definitely agree that being prepared is well worth the cost! We only have one fish tank, but my concern is being able to have my family prepared. Ten years ago we lost power for ten days due to a severe tropical storm! There were no places that had generators, but once everything settled down, we bought a generator! We don't ever want to have to go through that again.
