4449 was a familiar sight to me when it was inservice on the coast daylight as I lived near the SP line in ventura.ca. Loved to see it go by and hear the whistle as it crossed montalvo junction. one of my earliest memories is the GS streamliners of the starlights passing by at night and waking me up with their lights and the driving sound ot the wheels. Proud memories

This is a magnificent video and i want to thank you for sharing this with all of us. A special thanks to each commenter that has shared their memories and experiences with this beautiful Freedom Train. Your comments and watching this video brought tears to my eyes. My grandfather, on my fathers side m, was a conductor of a train in Toccoa, Georgia. Sadly, my grandfather passed away just before I was born. He was here in Marietta, Georgia awaiting my birth when he had a massive heart attack. While it was a sad event for my family, my birth was able to help ease their pain and as I grew up my father told me tons of stories about his dad and him and especially the love of trains. My dad went to college and received a degree in Engineering and Accounting. His accounting degree came from University of Georgia and he quickly went to work at Lockheed. He was one year in the Payroll department when he looked over at the Engineers as they were playing poker and looking as if they were having such a wonderful time in their jobs that he decided to go to Georgia Tech and get his Engineering degree. He worked for Lockheed for over 41 years. He worked in the Skunk works department and has a pin from that and as he just passed away this March 23rd, 2023, I have he beloved Lockheed badge with his picture of his high and tight hair cut with his horn rimmed glasses and his short sleeve dress shirt with his tie on and a pocket for his badge. Seeing this video would have thrilled my father and I am struggling with such tremendous grief that watching this and reading about everyones sweet memories has lifted my spirits and helped me to focus on my own precious memories with my dad and mom. So when i say thank you to you all i genuinely mean it from my heart ❤

On November 15, 1975 I went to see AFT when I was 8 years old for a class trip. Went through some of the cars, but did not see the locomotive(RATS). But still have the feeling I got to see history in the making.

I'm surprised they never talked about the Texas and Pacific #610 it pulled the American Freedom Train too. and also they didn't mention of how they WERE gonna use Norfolk And Western #611 for the Freedom Train till they changed their mind.

Only thing I didnt like about this was no mention of T&P 610 pulling the train in Texas. How does one completely skip over the largest engine that pulled the train in the largest state? Just wondering...

My buddy & Engineer, Richard is somewhere on that train as a 17 year old. Forgot how he conned his way on lol, but seriously Richard shared so much about the 4449 to me. Like they used to toss old brake shoes up under the engine and inside the frame rails. He said they’re probably still there.

Saw the 4449 going west on the Washington side of the Columbia River near The Dalles Oregon. I was out on my WaveRunner on the river and followed about 3 miles until 4449 outpaced my 42 mph top speed. Super neat view, 4449 at speed and catching 4449 while I was out on the river.
