@@amaraarcana7243 they were extremely in poor health and to be euthanized till this lovely couple rescued them. I guess you are one who favors killing them, aren't you? Messi is not native to Russia, and his condition cannot warrant his being exported to foreign zoos. He cannot survive in Siberia either or any Russian forrest as he was born in the zoo, he has no survival skills , he is a foreigner . It will be a death sentence if both of them are released into the wild. The zoos that gave them up were underfunded to continue their medical treatments. Are you going to campaign now to murder them ? I would rather live with them than be around a human like you.

@@amaraarcana7243 they do, but in Gerdas case, looking at her body language, she's a happy cat. She's learning commands and a lead, but stuff like that can't be rushed, they learn at their own pace especially at 7 or 8 years old. They also have to have control over her before venturing out of the immediate area on walks like Messi - that said they did try, but Gerda wasn't keen at all, so it's a case of going at the cats pace. She does have time out of the enclosure, to play freely and at some point will go further afield, so it's the best that can happen as animals such as Gerda can't be released, they wouldn't survive in the wild. She has a loving home with enrichment and comfort so for an animal born in captivity, it's a good place for her.

I'm really glad Ichel was able to experience care for the first time, even if she was struggling to accept it after a lifetime in the circus. What especially impressed me was how they tried to adapt their ways to help her, such as realising why she lashed out - she was almost blind and couldn't see until things were close which startled her. Sasha realised that and they started wearing brightly coloured overalls so she could see them sooner. This type of thing shows their attention to detail in the care of their cats.

There is a long documentary about Messi on another channel, it's nearly an hour. During that interview Sasha repeatedly mentions that he has learned about big cats for years, in preparation to having some in the house. He pointed out several times that people should not try that without expert knowledge, or they would end up dead. Even with calm cats like these two, one mistake can get you in huge trouble. That's why it is so nice to have channels like _I am Puma, I am Cheetah,_ and _Luna the Pantera_ ... we can enjoy admiring those cats from a distance while letting their expert guardians interact with them ... although I would really love to one day be able to touch a magnificent animal like these. But that will remain a dream, I guess.

Gerda was purchased from an accredited zoo for personal greed. She had lived all her life "harm free" in a zoo. She was well treated at the zoo. That is why she is a very healthy animal and is not a rescue. Messi is a true rescue with serious health problems. He was ill-treated at the zoo/petting zoo, and suffered fractures as well as nutritional deficiency. That's why his legs are shorter, spine is crooked, and is 1/3 smaller than normal pumas. He would have died if he was not rescued. He still currently suffers from kidney failure, in addition to the above health problems. Messi is a TRUE rescue that is now living a "harm free" life. Messi is a rescue, while Gerda's is a pet cheetah purchased for personal gains (as admitted by Sasha in their livestream).

It might be for personal reason, they said Sasha always loved cheetahs but maybe also mention that while Gerda lived a healthy life, the zoo was selling her because they were closing or selling animals they could not afford keeping anymore during the pandemic. As long as in their country is legal for them to have them and they are treated very well I don't see a problem. These are not animals that were ever to be set free, Messi was very sick and Gerda lived her whole life in a zoo, now she even goes for walk and gets a lot of attention just for herself. Poor ichel was I think mistreated in the circus-she was super defensive hissing all the time. Sasha and Masha calmed her down a bit, but then she was very sick… Cheetahs generally have a more affectionate manner than other large cats (they are not “big cats”), and particularly the females, but I think even among cheetahs, Gerda seems unusually sweet. But it helps that Sasha and Masha truly love their cats and are very nice people… and the animals sense this right away.

Most of the time they have a fence (such as the outer part of Gerda's enclosure) or glass between Messi and Gerda. I think it's an excellent compromise. A lot of cats including domestics are naturally stoic and solitary but obviously they can adapt to new situations . I have seven rescue cats and each has their own territorial boundaries, their own agendas and definitely their own personalities and all of them think they own me LoL 😂 Getting them to take turns getting their affection and cooperate and live together peacefully can be a challenge at times but we manage . One of the most important things is that they have enough space between themselves and that I give them attention as equal as possible , otherwise jealousy fueds can erupt . Whenever I watch a video like this or any other video regarding wildcats I always recognize the exact same behaviors I see every day with my own little pride of felines and it's really interesting to see.

I absolutely & simply love my sweet Gerda girl!!! I’ve been watching I Am Puma & I Am Cheetah, ever since their channels began… Alex & Marsha are the most loving parents of these to big cat’s & it shows!!! First was Messi’s channel & I was hooked… He is such a amazing, lovable & laid back pussycat plus, he loves his Daddy & Mommy more than most house cat’s do especially, with his Daddy!!! But to be equally fair, Gerda simply loves & adores her Mommy, just as well!!! These two big cat’s are such big mushes & are so well behaved, so much that they both are very approachable to any human… They are simply so wonderful & tame, that every house cat should take note, on how to be well mannered feline’s!!! LOL… I love how Messi wakes up & cuddles with Alexander & how he basically talks to Alex or talks, while he impatiently waits for Alex to return home!!! LOL… And Marsha, actually spends her time showing Gerda how girls apply & plays makeup with her plus, Marsha actually reads to Gerda, like if she is her child!!! And Gerda, will just lay there near or on her Mommies lap & listen while Marsha reads to her plus, Gerda never stops purring, ever!!! LOL… They are both, the most marvelous & sweetest fur babies ever!!! ❤️🐕&🐆❤️

Messi didn't wanna meet or play with Gerda at all in the beginning. but look how they both turned out the both them are now running around and playing with each other. These animals have so much love and affection for humans , so eventually if you keep introducing them to each other and give them time, eventually those too big cats will eventually learn to love each other too. just like they both love their too human parents. I don't think that Messi is chicken. He still tries to ambush Gerda when he can and defends the indoor areas. The problem was that when they first met (as seen in the video) Gerda found it all too easy to 'tag' Messi. She's a fast predator and Messi didn't like his hind legs being touched by Gerda because she did it the same way that Cheetahs bring down their prey in the wild - by sweeping away their hind legs and causing them to fall. Messi obviously felt that he was threatened (as prey) and that caused him to become very defensive. He may have more body mass than Gerda, but she has the speed and agility which makes her the dominant predator. Messi is very protective of his territory. He thinks the house belongs to him, but Gerda is not concerned about territory at all and regards the Dmitrievs as her 'family' group. That's why she licks and purrs so much when they meet. Gerda just wants to be part of the pack/pride, but Messi wants to be the lead cat and I suspect that he does have an inferiority complex when it comes to Gerda. He's not that way with other people and children, but Gerda still frightens him.

In order to be domesticated, those cat species would have to be subjected to multiple generations of breeding, in order to consolidate desirable traits (such as being comfortable around humans) and diminish undesirable traits (like the spraying of urine to mark their territory). Domestication isn't something that happens to individuals. If you want to say that Messi and Gerda have grown accustomed to humans, it would be more precise to use the term "socialized".

@@akinpaws The laws have changed indeed but Gerda would be permitted to live in the house, this was their initial plan when they got Gerda. Unfortunately Gerda is a full grown Cheetah and was never "potty trained" when she was young, she does her thing wherever she pleases. Having no training means also that she marks her territory whenever she pleases. Contrary to Messy who was potty trained from young age and does his thing inside in the shower or on walks. Gerda is too old to have her behaviour changed and thus will remain in her enclosure (which is a very nice one, the outer part will be closed off by glass in the next couple of days just like previous winter so that it's protected from the elements).
@resourcedragon

@@akinpawsJ: My understanding is that they had to get a licence to be a zoo so that they could keep Messi. That was also why they had to move out of their old flat - some pets were considered a bit too much. Gerda's enclosure meets the legal standards - and I suspect probably exceeds them. As noted, she can't go inside their house for too long or there will be a _lot_ of very smelly puddles to clean up.
