EDIT/CORRECTION: John Romero let me know that some of the historical info behind Heretic is a little off, so I'd like to fix that here. Turns out, Id Software began working on DOOM II almost right away, with Quake beginning development in 1995. I also should have said "Captain Marvel" and not "Shazam," as the character was not renamed until his 2011 re-introduction in DC Comics. ---- Happy Halloween, and thank you for all your support so far! Feel free to leave feedback, recommend a game, or ask questions.

I'm not a comic book reader, so I guess it's no surprise, but I had no idea that DC had a Captain Marvel. That's kinda confusing.

Warcraft/Starcraft always had good cheat codes. If you we're fast enough you could keep Lothar alive in WC1 with "There can be only one" (obvious Highlander reference). It was a challenge though, as I recall. WC2 also had "Make it so", obviously a nod to TNG.

Awesome video, I was a little late to being able to play Doom on account of my parents refusal to buy us a real PC as they were afraid we'd do nothing but play games on it (so they bought us a used C64 instead... with like 150 games), so it wasn't until we got our first real PC, a 100 MHz Pentium, that I finally got a chance to play the game a lot, and by then I was so wrapped up in Doom that I pretty much ignored Heretic and Hexen. I never noticed how much they really added to the engine at the time, and the Doom graphics always just appealed to me a little more, for some reason. The cheat codes and history of the games is interesting, though. I had always assumed these were just id games, I didn't realize Raven had a hand in them that far back. I remember them making some Quake engine-based games a bit later on and they had a reputation for making very solid games. I will have to revisit the older titles of that company.
@CodexShow6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment Adam! I too grew up with a C64, but had a bunch of other systems as well: Amiga, IBM 5150, and a whole lot of clones. Thanks again for the great and very informative video! Maybe make a next video in the future about Rise of the Triad (DOS)? That's a mysterious FPS game with full of secrets, quirks and oddities you don't see anywhere nowadays. And first of all, the original ROTT is absolutely playable still in 2018. I never completed every single level with 100% secrets although I was reading walkthroughs and guides. Sad that they don't make games like Heretic, Hexen, ROTT, Exhumed, Dark Forces etc. anymore. Those were the days in the early-mid 1990s :)

I remember first playing Heretic, in the days before the Internet took off and all we had were local dial-up BBS systems. People would share cheat codes they learned or discovered on there, and after seeing how the cheat codes in Heretic were actual words, I started typing random words into the game to see if I could stumble upon any. Kitty was one of the words I tried at random, and yup, I can honestly say I discovered the no clip cheat in Heretic without hearing it from someone else. Felt pretty good about that one!

They were first called "doom clones" and in 2-4ish years the press started calling them "shoot 'em up games" .. before settling on the term "first-person shooters" in the early 2000's" in my memory. Since PC gaming mags had a larger cultural penertation back then, since the availibilty of the internet and lack of content on subject matters were scarce online, I'd like to claim that gaming journalists had a pivotol role in shaping if not naming these new categories of video games.. and not just using statistics of the web's usage of those terms.

The Quickening isn't passing on immortality... They are already immortal. The Quickening is the gaining of all the power your opponent has gained in their immortal life. Every person you behead adds an entire man's strength to your body, and when you behead someone you gain all the strength of every person they've beaten. In the show and movies they didn't really show much of that but yeah technically immortals could lift trucks overhead and literally move mountains if they defeat enough powerful opponents...
